The new update now makes villagers be able to claim there own home
so if you build a basic wooden home with a reachable wooden door a
villager would enter and live there.
Not sure if I explained it that great but if I did..... CLICK THAT GREEN + BUTTON !

Looking for a survival bud! Please be able to host <3
Does it have to be made out of a certain material?
No, it doesn't matter what the house is made of. All that matters is that there is a wooden door, with a different number of "outside" spaces (where you could see the sky looking straight up) on one side than on the other, within five blocks in each direction. See the link in my sig for a detailed guide on villager housing, as well as other aspects of the mechanics of how NPC villages work.
Isn't this introduced a long while ago? Anyway, I did this in survival once. I basically lord over a village which I expanded from a population of a paltry +/- 10 villagers into a town with some 60-70+ villagers. Man, the local defence force was scary even to an intrepid Minecraftian like me :D. There were 6-7 golems patrolling the streets night and day- wouldn't want to accidentally swing your fist the wrong way or they'd forget immediately that you're their lord and protector hahaz.
The only problem with my village though is that they like to crowd into as few buildings as possible in the night. Minecraft could use an update that introduces more mechanics into the villages and their villagers.
This is far from new, and you do not need to be in creative mode using a spawn egg to create villagers for your own crafted village. Finding an existing village, putting villagers into minecarts and tranporting them to your village will also work. You only need two and provided there are enough homes (doors), the two villagers will breed.
Approximately 3 doors will support one villager. The ratio varies a bit depending on what source you use, but the most quoted ratio is something around 3.1 ~ 3.4. Last time I dabbled with villagers, a majority of the doors didn't even need to be accessable. The infernal racket of 30 to 40 villagers slamming doors would drive me crazy, so for each home I placed an additional 4 doors in a sealed off room under each house. That way a home actually had about one to two villagers and enough doors to support them.
Wiki is your friend and there are countless well done YouTube videos done on the breeding behaviors of villagers.

I just made a large hall in the center of town and they all seemed to flock there at night. It had beds and everything

You think magic isn't real? Consider this: for every person, there is a sentence -- a series of words -- which has the power to destroy them.
