This is what my house looks like, it might give you some ideas.
My house from a bridge that leads to my dirt cave.
Hallway that's at the main entrance.
Bedroom that has 2 chests that has a lot of misc things in them.
Room that I keep extra dogs for breeding and when not using.
Crafting/matrreal room with furnaces.
Farming/organic room (Yes I'm on a vine that I placed on the wall).
Another hallway with a chest that has pumpkins.
Pumpkin farm
Enchanting room
Incompleted brewing room. Where I'm standing will be 2 brewing stands when I get some blaze rods. The caldrons will be filled with water when I remember that they're empty. Iffinant water source will be added to the room somehow since I don't like putting current scars in my fishing pond that was there naturally. Soul sand and Nether wort farm will be added when I get to the Nether. I have a crafting table under that furnace, you just can't see it in this angle.
Storage room.
My cats' room. The same reason as I have my dogs in their room. The cats do have a chest with fish, but I placed it in another room that's all the way to the other side of the room. I do this to keep the cats from sitting on the chest.
The back of my house. Those stairs are there so it's easier to take the cats in and out of their room instead of taking them all the way through the house.
My house from another angle.
While I was taking those screenshots, I never looked at my clock and when I was going through them, it looked like I spend around 8 minutes taking those screenshots around my house. I had to fight 2 spidres while doing this.
I can't really give you an ide, but I could give you pictures of my house.
My furnaces and crafting table.
The enterance to my actual house.
My "village."
A house.
My path.
My grinder house.
The rest of my house.
The underside of my bridge [END COBBLESTONE BLOCK WILL SOON BE CHANGED TO STAIRS].
The tower to my grinder.
The ground enterance.
Inside the "grinding" room.
Clearing out my hill.
My outpost tower.
My animal farm.
BTW, sorry about the number of pictures, lol. Not my fault if it lags up your computer; you opened that spoiler.
My god. The shear amount of cobble in those buildings is mind boggling.
I usually try to stay fairly faithful to the landscape I am building on. But also laying out a primitive floor plan could help you as well. I typically use logs to make a skeletal frame when doing this. Even if I end up getting rid of it eventually.

Humanity is the creation of Logic and Emotion, Calculation and Imagination, Cold Analysis and Blind Faith. This is why I believe it is a strange Human that would prize one while shunning the other. For a calculator can do math just as well as you, but a calculator can not use math to make the world a better place.
There's this guy on youtube called Lynchyinc, he makes REALLY cool steampunk houses, and you could probably use some of his techniques for your own house
I have lots of wool, so I'm thinking up an interesting idea
I also have a cobble gen so I think red wool + cobble will be a cool look.
I like CreeperConquerers house so I'm going to try something like that.
Any other block combos you guys would recommend?
I think that using wood, stone brick, cobble, logs, and wool (maybe, depends on how well you can make it work) is a very good combination of blocks. Another tip that I like to use is with torches, if I decide to use some torches I will probably put them ontop of a fence post attached to a wall so they don't look so ugly
I have pretty good stuff and I'm decently advanced.
Please post a picture or an idea for me to use! Thanks
If you have a really cool house, describe what your house looks like

You need to add roofs to your houses. Just a suggestion.

Try creating fancy houses and fashionable ones.

Not all good houses need stair roofs
