I showed my girlfriend minecraft a while ago, and she got into playing the game around Beta 1.6. We played just the two of us on an SMP server I created. We had a lot of fun, but we played with mobs not spawning, which limited our building options. The problem is that she is kind of easily scared in the game. She's already kind of scared just by being in a dark cave without mobs, but on the times I've turned on mobs she will freak out at any mob surprising her. On our last attempt at making a new world, she lasted under one day before she fell into a cave and logged out when she realized there was a mob down there.
She has expressed a strong desire to play again as I've been telling her about the changes that have happened- she especially loves the idea of baby animals and potions- but I know its not going to be long in game before she is too scared to play. I'm looking to find some helpful ideas that might mitigate the 'scariness' of minecraft or otherwise allow us to play this game together.
I've considered texture packs, mods, or maybe changing the server/client settings, but I haven't come across anything that would allow us to play the full game including mobs and all those delicious drops that come from them.
There is a texture pack that somebody made for their six-year-old son to make it less scary, but I can't remember what it was called or who it is by, but there is something out there if you can find it :tongue.gif:
I guess use a texture pack that makes the mobs look happy and cheery.
I'm not sure if using different sounds for the mobs would crash minecraft, but if it doesn't try that.
There not really that scary.. if shes old enough to have a boy friend she should have a problem. Just get her to fight one, all they do is walk towards you, no big challege. But you better keep her away fomr endermen... just get a new texture pack for her, like the ones that give the mobs smily faces :/

I would do mods too, since that seems to be the most effective way. You should check out HogOfWar's peaceful pack http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/368468-181-peaceful-pack-v52/ which just adds fossils and other ways to get hostile mob drops on peaceful mode. Unfortunately, this is single player only, so I can't help you on multiplayer. you might want to suggest an smp version to the creator.
Does anybody know how to install mods I watched a bunch of videos but I can't get it. Does anyone notice that there is not a lot of diamond? leave me something on my profile. Thank You. :
Thanks muchly for all the replies. I think I can work with a texture pack and changing the sounds, although a peaceful pack sounds like a good idea as well.
On a personal note, I agree that the question should also be how can we make minecraft *more* scary. While my 25 year old significant other might be scared of everything, I enjoy the fear and suspense.
If you just want the mob drops to craft with, then why not just spawn in those items? You can do that in a vanilla minecraft server using the give command and the item/block ID's. Then you can just leave it on peaceful.
Mute the sound, Retexture the mobs, my ex was also scared at first but she played more and more untill it didnt scare her anymore :tongue.gif: hope this helps!
Try out Jolicraft or good morning craft. Turn the brightness settings up, and give her armor. Get her diamonds to show your love and be helpful in all ways :biggrin.gif:

They just make annoying noises, what's to be afraid of?Edit: Try retexturing the mobs to be ... friendly-er looking? Remove their sounds if possible?

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.

1st of all, if she wants to go underground/outside at night, come with her so she knows shes protected.
2nd of all, let her turn her volume to about 15% so the sound would be less scary. [It is proven!]
3rd of all, store all your goods in a chest, so when you see the monsters she wouldn't freak out so much.
BUT. if shes afraid of the faces the monsters have, two words mate. TEXTURE PACKS.
