It will grow, however I would suggest removing the other wheat next to it. Basically it's trying to grow, but since you only have 1 of the 4 adjoining blocks grow able, it keeps failing. That's my best guess anyway. I usually always have two tilled slots next to my melons. Usually I will plant two melons in a pattern like this:
M T
T T
T M
That way they both have two spaces to grow, that don't overlap with the other melon.

Oh and as to the title: THATS WHAT SHE SAID!
It can take longer for a melon to grow on a 1 block space. Keep waiting and it will grow eventually.
If you want them to grow fast, surround the stem with four tilled blocks.
The stem picks a spot surrounding it to grow in, and if it can't grow there, it fails and starts over. If you have four blocks around, it won't fail, so it has a chance to grow much faster (some times faster than wheat if it has daylight)
My melons won't grow either. I'm a dude though, so I didn't really expect them to...
No really, my melon farm won't grow. I got the design from the minecraft wiki, and the farm was working perfectly until around a week ago when the melons suddenly wouldn't grow anymore
It stopped spawning melons around the time where all the plants had fully grown, so I tried removing some plants to see if it would help, but still no bust.
In the image below you can see that
The plants all have somewhere to spawn melons
There is at least 1 air block above every plant
There is enough lighting for the plants
I'm playing on my buddy's server by the way.
It looks to me like we might be dealing with a bug here...
Any ideas? Professional help would be much appreciated.
I kind of had an issue like this, but it was only 1 out of the 64 planted. I ended up digging up the dirt next to the stalk, putting it back down an re-tilling it. It works fine now.
Trying to get games written for windows to work on a Linux machine is like trying to put a diaper on an incontinent buffalo. Sure, you might get it all done, but you'll certainly be left with a huge mess, and it's very time consuming.

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..

Try getting rid of the wheat.I had a similar problem on my mega-farm a few days ago and getting rid of adjacent crops did the trick.
I disapprove.

It also tells you that his name is Sam and he is very conceited (due to his username)
You need to till the soil next to them.
