Hey guys, I've played minecraft off and on the past few years but never really understood what to do because I didn't put the time and effort into it... well finally I dove in again and started doing research on all of the stuff you can do.. and I came upon my first ocean monument the other day and I was just wondering if you guys had any good tips to turn it into a base.. I don't even know where to start because I keep getting hit by the guardians.. Thanks in advance.

I'm not planning on conquering it anytime soon, just a project i want to start planning for. I'm playing on console on a seed with 4 other people who play regularly so we all want to do it together.
Luckily we spawned right next to a mansion and we found this 100-200 blocks away from it, crazy right? We just thought it would be fun to eventually take over, none of us know where to start though lol.
I like the way Falsesymmetry did it recently: she just put TNT on the top corners of the monument where the guardians usually are, surrounded it with slime blocks and a redstone block. She jumped in to kill the guardians one at at time, and that was it. I can't find her video, though, as it wasn't the title of the episode--within the past few weeks, though.
She made it look super easy, especially as she isn't a monster-hunter, typically.

Mumbo and Xisuma did the same. Honestly, the best way I've seen to kill the elder guardians.
I've conquered one. I was fortunate to have some good armor enchantments suited for the job, so in retrospect it didn't seem that bad.
Ideally you will want boots with Depth Strider, and a helmet with Aqua Affinity and Respiration. With a high Respiration enchantment, honestly, water breathing potions were almost not worth it. Also, if you take milk to get rid of the mining fatigue (and you should - I would say 5 buckets minimum), you will cancel all the other potion effects as well. You can place a torch on a wall, it will create an air bubble for a fraction of a second. Placing a ladder on a wall makes a permanent air pocket for you. Combine that with Respiration, and I really didn't use water breathing much.
I would go in from the top and try to find the Elder up there first. I used a strength potion to make it easier to take him down, but they're really not all that bad once you find them. Then the other two are supposed to be in the wings of the lower structure. These can be harder to find.
After I got those 3 Elders out, I was lucky enough to find 2 sponge rooms. They were instrumental in drying out the interior of the structure. I walled off sections to work a small amount at a time.
When you attempt this, bring a couple of stacks of slime blocks. They are insta-break even with mining fatigue. I was planning on building a guardian farm, but after conquering and gutting my first monument I thought it looked so cool I decided to keep it.
Conquering and gutting the inside of a monument to turn it into a base is actually not that hard.
Then I conquered a second one and built my guardian farm, and that is much more difficult, time consuming and tedious because it involves clearing out water from the inside and outside of the monument. I broke down the entire monument and rebuilt it as a farm which took quite a lot of time.
The stone button by the corner of the guardian kill area switches the farm from collection-only to XP mode, so this is also my XP farm. I now have unlimited prismarine and sea lanterns. I also get a lot of squid ink and more fish than anyone could ever need.

I appreciate the video link!
