Does anyone else think fire protection is unfairly underrated? I was recently taking a bracing involuntary swim in a lava pool while wearing a diamond fire protection IV chest, feather falling IV protection III boots, and some iron and noticed that I was taking zero damage. At all. Just the boots would not have done that. Since natural mob spawns aren't really a threat once you have iron armor, much less diamond, lava is always the biggest threat in the game unless you have a fire resistance potion on you at all times (sometimes you mis-pour your water bucket in panic and wind up dead). Fire protection is pretty bad when you have to deal with a lot of mobs at once, but if you're caving or dealing with Blaze it's pretty awesome, in my opinion.
The anwser to this is simple : Straight up Protection > all other types of Protections.
In this game you have 4 types of protections :
Fire Protection
Blast Protection
Projectile Protection
And Protection
The first three only offer defense against their specific source of damage, while Protection works with ALL source of damage and is equally effective at blocking a specific damage type as is the specific enchant.
In other words, when it comes to reducing Fire damage Protection is equally effective as Fire Protection, but Fire Protection won't do you any good against Explosions, Projectiles or even normal attacks.
And ideal Armor set is Bassically the Following :
Diamond Headgear : Protection IV, Aqua Affinity and Respiration
Diamond Chestplate : Protection IV
Diamong Leggings : Protection IV
Diamonds Boots : Protection IV, Feather Failling IV
Anything else is inferior to this. This is the perfect Armor Set. Period. (and yes it is somewhat sad, but it removes any strategic element of owning specific armor sets for specifics tasks, such as having mostly Fire protection when venturing in the Nether.)

This is all true, except that straight protection works by redirecting the damage to you to the armor. A protection IV chestplate may make you nigh invulnerable, but it won't last very long. The other protections actually reduce the damage you take from the source and don't damage the armor further, so a suit of armor with blast protection, fire protection, projectile protection, and one piece of protection will last a lot longer than a complete protection IV suit would and makes you similarly invulnerable.

This is actually untrue, the perfect armor set would consist of mostly the same items except mixed in with Protection 3/2. The protection enchant works by giving point values until you reach the hard cap of 25. I believe protection 4 gives 11, protection 3 gives 7, Protection 2 Gives 5 or 3, and Protection 1 gives 1 or 2. You could research the exact values but it is something similar. Anyways, the point is that wearing an entire set of Protection 3 is as effective as wearing an entire set of Protection 4.

Correct, you should save your extra Prot 4 pieces to combine with Prot 3 sets, instead of wasting them all in a single set. That way you can get two maxed sets instead of one.

Well you should be mixing and matching your various protection pieces in order to achieve the desired 25 points of protection value. Each piece has the same value in terms of points so a Protection 3 Chestplate and a Protection 3 Helmet will both give 7 points towards your protection value.
Personnally I don't really care all that much. I just make Diamond armor, enchant each piece with 30 levels and hope to get something good. On my last set, I got one Protection III and two Projectile Protection IV so far so I'm like : "Cool this set is going to protect well against archers, I'm fine with that since Skeletons are pretty much the number 1 mob that can still hit me often." I hope I get Feather Failing + Blast or Fire protection on the boots, but that's about it.
The only time I care about when enchant I got on my armor is when I go to the nether. I at least want the equivalent of Protection IV or Fire Protection IV when I go there.
Thoughts?

Or is it a specific kind of protection 3 for each piece of armor?

My friend safari is water, PM me and I'll add you!
I'm fine with that since i can keep repairing my armor with anvils now. (although the anvil level prices are a bit high)
