You go out into a new survival world struggling to survive. Gathering resources slaying monster hordes and finally creating a place to call home. Sadly my issues lie with the latter. You see I have created this post to gather ideas for designs of practical yet excellent looking survival houses. This way I (and perhaps any curious readers looking at this post) will be able to have a design to fall back to so I (and said readers) don't end up living in derpy blobs of cobble and dirt. Thank you for the help.
GENERATION 9006: The first time you see this, copy it into your sig on any forum and add 1 to the generation. Social experiment
If Facebook, Myspace, and Twitter were all destroyed, 90% of teens would
go insane. If you're one of the 10% that would be laughing at them,
copy & paste this into your signature and hope it happens.
Here's one I made a while back. Might take a while to build in survival, but the layout is simple. It has a large kitchen type area, an upstairs storage room, a dock, a farm, a mushroom farm, an animal farm, and a very well hidden enchanting room. (If you look VERY carefully in the last picture, you can kind of see where it is.) Hope it inspires you!
You could find a natural piece of terrain and build aound/with it. For example one of my survival houses used a short tunnel I found through a small mountain as a corridor. It isn't straight like in a normal house, it goes along the path of the cave. (I'all add some screenshots later)
I usually build a small structure with a bed and a couple chests to respawn inside of, light up a large area around that, and then set up my base around that, laying around mine entrances, farms, chests, etc

For those times when you need a cave above the ground.
Couldn't you say that putting all your stuff outside makes the entire world your base though?
Actually, I don't. When I do keep everything outside, it's usually at the spawn chunks and everything is still organized. Once I leave a certain radius of them, I'm no longer in my base.

Watch out for the crabocalypse. Some say the day will never come. But it will.
Feel free to drop by for a chat whenever.
If you'd like to talk with me about other games, here are a few I play.
Team Fortress 2
Borderlands series (Borderlands 2 is my favorite game, ever. TPS combat is a lot of fun and makes up for the lower-quality story, in my opinion)
Elder Scrolls series
Warframe (IGN is something like That_One_Flesh_Atronach)
Pokémon series (HGSS forever)
Rocket League
Fallout series
Left 4 Dead 2 (Boomer files always corrupt though)
SUPERHOT (SUPERHOT is the most innovative shooter I've played in years!)
Dead Rising series (Dead Rising 2 is one of my favorite games, and the 3rd was a lot of fun. 1st has poor survivor AI and the 4th is bad)
Just Cause series
Come to think of it, I mainly play fighting-based games.

Here are my best design tips for making a nice house in Minecraft:
Pick your 2-3 main materials: one for your walls, the other for your roof, and an optional third for your foundation. The roof material must have a stair and slab block and should be a complementary color with the wall. Some common and nice starter wall+roof combos are oak+spruce and spruce+dark oak. If you're well-equipped and want to be more adventurous and are building a base in an uncommon biome, you could also try things like sandstone+acacia (desert), acacia+cobblestone (savannah) or mossy cobble+spruce (taiga or ice plains).
Draw the outline of your house first on the ground, and don't make it a perfect square or rectangle; real houses just don't look like that. Instead, connect 2-5 squares or rectangles of different sizes together to give yourself several rooms. As you're making each wall, consider: do I want anything to be centered on this wall? If so, length matters. For example, if you want to center a single door on one wall, make sure the wall is an odd number of blocks long; for double doors, an even number. Also, if you want a porch, a fenced garden/backyard, or entryways for each door, now's the time to lay that out too.
Make each outer corner a column out of a different material than the wall itself. These columns should match either the wall or the roof. For example, if you're using oak+spruce, make the corner columns out of spruce wood or oak wood blocks. You can also make horizontal support beams out of this color if you have large areas of wall that need some more color.
Build the walls and columns up at least 5 blocks (6-10 is better if you have enough materials), and make sure you build some rooms up to different levels than others; this will give your roof variation, and give you a second story (or attic). Leave space for windows if you don't want to have to cut them out later. (Tinted glass, especially white tinted, looks a lot better than regular glass using the default texture pack because tinting them softens the diagonal texture lines.)
For your roof:
Use stair blocks to build up to your preferred height. If you want a steeper roof, you can alternate between stair blocks and full blocks (block + stair on top).
If you level the roof off at any point, use slabs so no mobs spawn up there.
Make the roof stick out 1 block over the edge of your walls. It makes it look twenty times better, dunno why.
Last, texture. This involves adding things like chimneys, torches, windowsills, fences, trapdoors, and slabs for variation. This one's hardest to explain, I'm afraid, but basically just have fun with it.
Here are a few small to medium-sized houses I found online that look like they used most of these tips and turned out pretty well:

Build a giant tree, hollow the trunk and top out, build base inside said tree. Make sure to build a glass roof at the sky limit over it though so lightning cant light it on fire.

(Via Skype) Greenwindu: I’m the sort of person that does a lot of things at once and only finish a few, but some things work well. Deep Space, our town, Dead Island, Rabakine, all really nice things made among projects that failed, but today I really don’t want to do anything. I’ll put a normal survival map up, or just some really weird poorly made thing to cruelly laugh at.

Nice but you do know this thread is meant for survival houses right? I was hoping to get some ideas that look amazing aren't too resource expensive

It's a small Tuscan house I designed for one of my survival worlds. It can seem a little hard to make at first, but if you exclude the outer fence (Iron bars & glowstone) then all you really need is clay for the roof & flower pots, sand for the walls, cobblestone for the chimney, and wood.

No.
House? I just requisition villager homes instead and use it as my house xD
If its not enough i join more houses and it becomes my own personal complex, with an iron door so that they cant get in
But yea im subscribing to this thread for ideas as well

I'm beyond even that. I usually just place everything out in the open, not lit up. And I've started playing exclusively Hard mode.
You'd wonder why skeletons kill me so much.

Thanks for the reply Paintbrush 11 I do agree it would take awhile to build

That water texture looks beautiful
You could do what I do. Build any old thing on stilts and put a farm/pen under it.
Why the hell build houses when you can live in a cave during the entire game?
Why live in caves when you could not have a base at all?
