Create a wide open space in the Nether, but only 3 blocks high so zombie pigmen can spawn but not ghasts. Leave the vicinity so they can spawn, go back, kill them all, collect all the gold nuggets, rinse and repeat.

I do have a strip mine at layer 12, which is where I get my diamond. I was just wondering if there is a better way to get gold, or should I just continue with what I'm doing ? Thanks.
I bet you don't have a strip mine, because a strip mine is open to sky and rain.
Actually gold can be found below layer 30, so you could do a branch mine at 18 and another at 24 and find plenty. And the thing about caves isn't true. Gold is equally rare everywhere. Caving is fun, but if you don't have a cave handy, don't go searching. Just mine.
Perhaps, if you get bored of mining, you could go to the nether and kill zombie pigmen. You can get gold nuggets, and xp as a bonus. You'd need 54 gold nuggets to craft 6 powered rails, so I don't suggest this method unless you want some xp.
You could also go exploring for desert pyramids, those things contain a lot of gold (I've gotten 30+ gold ingots from one)
