A tip Iactually live by: never eat food until it'll bring your hunger exactly up.
Simply put, the way hunger works you'll get the saturation boost as long as you fill your hunger bar, and when you have spare saturation you'll heal fast due to a 1.9 change. I do occasionally break this rule if, perse, I have 2.5 hunger bars missing but I'm at 5 health left, and I have a steak on me. I'll probably eat the steak just because I'm a very clumsy player and I need all the health I can get.
This tip mainly applies to before you have enough food to last days. If you have, say, two stacks of chicken, then go on ahead and eat to restore that 1.5 missing bars.

Watch out for the crabocalypse. Some say the day will never come. But it will.
Feel free to drop by for a chat whenever.
If you'd like to talk with me about other games, here are a few I play.
Team Fortress 2
Borderlands series (Borderlands 2 is my favorite game, ever. TPS combat is a lot of fun and makes up for the lower-quality story, in my opinion)
Elder Scrolls series
Warframe (IGN is something like That_One_Flesh_Atronach)
Pokémon series (HGSS forever)
Rocket League
Fallout series
Left 4 Dead 2 (Boomer files always corrupt though)
SUPERHOT (SUPERHOT is the most innovative shooter I've played in years!)
Dead Rising series (Dead Rising 2 is one of my favorite games, and the 3rd was a lot of fun. 1st has poor survivor AI and the 4th is bad)
Just Cause series
Come to think of it, I mainly play fighting-based games.
Advancement? Do you mean sprinting? There is a key to run faster, I believe the default is Left-Control (and jump-sprinting is even faster, but you get hungry fast and need to eat a lot more often).
Use a technique I would call "playing with a rip cord".
Wherever you are, whatever you do, make sure that you have your "rip cord" in the hand, so that you don't die, when you're getting trouble.
That means:
1) Don't make expeditions, if you're not 100% sure that you'll find your way back to your base. (compass, map, coordinates, ..)
2) ALWAYS take a bed with you. If it's getting dark and you don't HAVE to move on, don't do it. Take your bed out of your backpack and take a sleep. Don't let the monsters even spawn.
3) Never ever dig straight down. You can fall into a cave full of monsters, or even worse, full of lava.
4) ALWAYS have a bucket of water with you. In case that you've caught fire, empty the bucket above you and take a cold shower.
5) Food, Food, Food. You can't have enough. Before you go, make sure that you have twice as much food with you than you expect to need.
3) Have good food with you, the better food you have, the less you spend time in combat eating, and it heals you a lot
4) Have a bed for skipping nights.
5) Dont risk it. If you have 4 stacks of iron ore, 15 diamonds and 2 stacks of lapis go back home. You can always return back down there and the time you spend going home and back is faaar faaaaaar less than the time you will need to spend mining back the stuff you just lost cause you got killed.
6) Pay attention to your enviroment. Sometimes a simple hole that leads to a lava pool is enough to kill you. Which reminds me, have a water bucket on you.
Follow these. They're the best responses on here. Follow these, and you should have no problem with surviving and advancing.
