Well, there are these special blocks in the game that give off light, like torches and glowstone.
You can use these blocks in/around your house to make it very, very bright.
Monsters do not like these bright areas, and don't spawn near them.
No monsters spawning nearby mean no monsters to break in, right?
Bonus points if the whole structure is made of a light source.
well, making houses is- you can start makin small houses next to each other & create a small town/ then, create 2 floor houses with a backyard. to do mob proof is not well. unless your on Easy or Normal.

they can come from far away.if you have tekkit use indictiction torches.
Not if they don't see you. Stay inside your house until you see them burn!!! You could also make a wall, or a lava moat (as you already suggested). But be sure the bridge isn't made out of wood, it will burn.
Mobs spawn in a radius about 120 blocks around the player. However, unless a mob is within 16 blocks of you, it won't "notice" and track you. So, they have to be 16 blocks or closer away to threaten you. If that area is lit up, guess what? No mobs.
I use many torches and a two-wide bridge with snow golems on one side (make sure they can't be attacked/escape!) that knocks mobs into lava below with snowballs (oh, the irony of something cold knocking you into something hot) while keeping players safe (unless they walk off the edge- stupid human AI!).

I have no idea what to put here, nor do I have any idea what to make my profile pic. Ideas welcome, I suppose. Now satisfy my like *****ing hogging self and give me a little rep, please and thank you?
There are these things, they're called fences. I'm not sure if you've ever heard of them, but when you place them around your house, mobs can't get in. I'm not exactly sure how they work... but I use them a lot.

but they could just walk into that lit up area just naturally I think that's what he was saying.
i wuld love to have a mob proof house cause you cant get killed and you wuld be protecetedi wish i had an obsidian house but the one thing so we can protect our villages
Besides proper lighting of all floor surfaces, another key to a mob proof house is to have more than one entrance, so it you do find a creeper waiting outside your door, you have another way out.
The only thing that can spawn in a well lit area is slimes, but if lucky enough to build something in a slime spawn area, just build elsewhere and utilize that place to get slime balls. Also be aware that endermen can teleport anywhere 3 or more blocks high.
It is possible to make mob proof entrances by placing a block of soul sand right outside the doorway. Mobs will sink into the soul sand and will not be able to get into a 2 block high x 1 block wide entrance. However, you can get in if you remember to hop over the soul sand.
You could try making a lava moat and a hidden bridge made from pistons. Hide an XNOR gate under it and connect redstone to both sides. Put a lever on each side so you could open and close. But this would use large amount of materials and wouldn't work in SMP because other players could use the lever. An alternative way is a secret entrance. Make a lava fall and place a minecart on the other isde. Right clicking on the minecart would warp you through.

You'd be surprised, mobs are idiots.

Kinda claustrophobic, though
