Hello everyone! So today on my world, I thought to myself "Hmm, I should look for Fossil(s)!". Luckily, I knew where to find them because of ibxtoycat's video today! I found a surface desert cave and then I explored it for a bit..
I found a ravine then BAM there was the Fossil! I got so excited because I've never seen one in Minecraft including Creative, Spectator, or Survival! If you don't know how rare they are, it's about a 1 in 2000 chance to spawn in 64 chunks, and I found one first try!!!! I then discovered it was a rib, which is fine no matter what. Go check them out in the pictures below! Thanks for reading this and have a nice day!
Why the 1/2000 per 64 chunk? I don't even know if that is right though. The wiki says 1/64 chance to spawn fossils in deserts and swamplands chunks.

I didnt even know that there where fossils in minecraft xD
They added them in 1.10.
The Indiana Jones inside me wants to scream,"This belongs in a museum!" Congratulations on finding your first fossil. I haven't been playing much 1.10, so I haven't come across any myself. I want to wait until 1.11 comes out before I start my quest to finally kill the enderdragon after 6 years of playing minecraft (Yes, I know the enderdragon wasn't in the game 6 years ago, but whatever).

Oh, I think I got some things mixed up! But I do remember reading/hearing that somewhere... But isn't that too rare? Yea, I must have misheard/misread a few things. xD

That 1/2000 per 64 chunks is probably for desert wells.

Watch out for the crabocalypse. Some say the day will never come. But it will.
Feel free to drop by for a chat whenever.
If you'd like to talk with me about other games, here are a few I play.
Team Fortress 2
Borderlands series (Borderlands 2 is my favorite game, ever. TPS combat is a lot of fun and makes up for the lower-quality story, in my opinion)
Elder Scrolls series
Warframe (IGN is something like That_One_Flesh_Atronach)
Pokémon series (HGSS forever)
Rocket League
Fallout series
Left 4 Dead 2 (Boomer files always corrupt though)
SUPERHOT (SUPERHOT is the most innovative shooter I've played in years!)
Dead Rising series (Dead Rising 2 is one of my favorite games, and the 3rd was a lot of fun. 1st has poor survivor AI and the 4th is bad)
Just Cause series
Come to think of it, I mainly play fighting-based games.

Desert wells actually have a 1/1000 chance per chunk, which is not actually that rare; for comparison, villages and temples have a 1/1024 chance per chunk, both of which correspond to an area 506-512 blocks on a side (one difference is that villages and temples are generated on a 32x32 chunk grid with a random offset within it so there will always be one per 32x32 chunk area if the location is suitable; you can find more than one village per 32x32 chunk area if it is not aligned to the grid, which starts at 0,0-31-31 and multiples of 32 from that, a 32x32 chunk region offset by 16 chunks can have 0-4 villages. Desert wells simply use a 1/1000 chance per chunk, meaning that any number may generate within a given 1000 chunk area).
Fossils are a 1/64 chance per chunk, meaning that on average there is one per 128x128 block region, which is not really that uncommon, except for the fact that most of them are buried and you'll usually only find them if they are exposed by caves, which are not very common within the layers they generate in (compare to diamonds; one vein per chunk is not actually that rare but most of them are hidden; I've only found about 5% of all the diamonds in the regions I've explored by caving. If that is directly translated to fossils then you'd have to explore 1,280 chunks to find one, albeit they are bigger so are more likely to intersect a cave, and unlike ore they can replace air, on the other hand caves are 2-3 times more common at diamond level).

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
I completely forgot about fossils!

Huh. You learn something new every day! Good job finding one! I had absolutely no idea these were a thing in 1.10.
