I play with a couple other people in a world hosted by minecraft Realms. I'm thinking of starting a new world when 1.11 comes out. Since it is Realms, it has to be 100% vanilla, but I don't mind setting up command blocks and a redstone clock to spice things up. I'm also planning on tweaking the terrain generation. Lowering the height stretch to between 4 and 6 seems to give some nice mountain enhancements without going all the way to amplified (which is sort of ridiculous, in my opinion.)
The sort of redstone things I have in mind are like this:
But in this world, the idea isn't to make it super difficult, just different and maybe a bit more challenging. But mostly different.
I'm thinking no coords, speed-enhanced creepers, maybe a starter kit with some new content things in it (shulker chests, llama eggs). Maybe a bit of fire resist for the zombies for a minute or two at dawn... things like that.

Here's some ideas I have come up with so far:
-Small biomes
-modified height stretch
These two settings combined give the landscape a varied, epic appearance. Not sure of the exact height stretch I'm going to use. 12 is default. If you lower it to about 6, you get some neat results. Combined with small biomes it is very interesting.
-extra dungeons because come on
-no coords because I'm personally very efficient at using coordinates in cheaty nonrealistic ways
-a small area with spawn protection, and you spawn on a fancy platform near y=250. The only way down is to jump. But...
-free elytra at spawn. Press a button, get an elytra. I figure they're too fun not to use all the time, and the lack of a chestplate is punishment enough without having to go find one in the end.
-maybe a little teleporter on the land directly under the spawn platform, so you can get back up there to jump off again. Weeeeee
