I just downloaded Minecraft today because it got huge recommendations from gamers at school. It's fun and I just spawned in the tundra, hoping to get some of the basic resources(ie. wood, wool, stone, etc.) you need to live in Minecraft, but the tundra is lacking that at the moment. I'm still a n00b at this game because it's been 10 mins so far, and night has fallen already. I have NO shelter or bed. My only tools are a wooden pickaxe and sword, and I have some food. I know the creepers are going to come for me soon, so what should I do now to survive the night?
The main goal of day 1 should be to get a set of stone tools, a furnace, and some food. Wooden tools are just not worth it in this game. If you ONLY make a wooden pickaxe, and use it to get cobblestone right away, you can basically survive the first day by only cutting down one tree.
When night is starting to fall, find a hill and dig into the side of it. You can make a door if you want (which is two columns of 3 rows in a crafting table), otherwise just seal off the entrance with blocks. If you were lucky enough to find coal on the surface in day 1, you can use that to make torches, or you can burn wooden logs in a furnace in order to make charcoal (which is the same thing as coal, it's just a different name).
If you want help figuring out the game, you can also go to Youtube and search for "Minecraft surviving first night" or use the Minecraft wiki to find crafting recipes: http://www.minecraftwiki.net.
Good luck to you. I hope you come to enjoy this game as much as most of us have.
Watching lets play series on youtube was a good way for me to learn the basics. Once you have it down you should be first collecting wood, making a wood pickaxe, get cobblestone, make a stone pickaxe, shovel, axe and find coal. Main thing is you can just block yourself up if night comes and wait til the morning. 3 wool from 3 sheep and wood planks make a bed which you can use to rest until morning.
But youtube videos are a great way to learn what to do.
There's no shame in changing the difficulty to peaceful. Minecraft has quite a large learning curve and I highly recommend getting your head around the basics of crafting and gathering before you put up with the annoyance of mobs.
Well, I followed a herd of cows to get some beef, but instead found a cave. I went in and saw some zombies and creepers, and ran out. Next thing I know, I see a zombie on fire, so I'm guessing the monsters are playing with fire in there, and I shouldn't make it my shelter....

Actually, monsters (mobs) die in the sunlight. It sets them on fire. Only creepers survive in the sunlight. But, yes, do not make that your shelter. Mobs will kill you there.

Spiders and Endermen also survive the daylight, but Spiders (and Cave Spiders) become neutral and Enderman will teleport away from the player if he or she gets close or looks at them.
Watch the "How to survive and thrive season 2" on youtube. You can kind of skim it but it will really help you learn the game. Helped me. know what do get done when I started
