I am trying to create an auto wheat farm using farmer villagers similar to this:
The problem I am facing is that even after I fill the villagers inventory with 8 stacks of seeds he will always pick up the wheat after harvesting but leave behind the seeds. Any suggestions as to how I can fix this so that he leaves the wheat behind for me to pick up?
I suspect he didn't take "8 full stacks" of seeds.... You have to fill the farmer's inventory BEFORE he is given ANY FOOD WHATSOEVER. if you wait until you get him in the field before stocking him up, he'll try to harvest any wheat within reach.
The only other explanation I can think of is that you filled him with 8 stacks of seeds, but put him in an empty field with more than 64 tiles of 'tilled soil'. He could plant a full stack's worth, which would then open a slot that can then soak in the wheat.
Thank you very much! That is true, he has harvested some wheat prior to me giving him the seeds. He really only picked up about 7.5 stacks. I will try it now with a newly spawned villager in creative and see what happens.
I just tested with a newly spawned villager and it works great! thank you! Do you think there may come a point where he quits farming and has to give bread to another villager or is that not a problem?
As long as he is allowed to pick up the seeds as he harvests wheat, he'll stay full and you won't have to worry about him picking up anything else (carrots, potatoes, etc).

They don't actually convert wheat harvested into bread and store it in their inventory. When they go to share bread with a villager they instantly convert wheat from their inventory into bread. They can however take bread if given to them.

my guy must have stuff other than seeds in his inventory then, i'll need to try and breed a new one
Or just leave him in a field and let him plant his seeds in his inventory. When he plants something you don't want him to have just remove it from the field. Eventually he will have no more.

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..
... IF their inventory isn't already full...
