So I went through the portal near my home base (I needed to gather some nether quartz) and I find two creepers, a skeleton, and two ghasts awaiting me on the other side. Of course the creepers blew out the portal and blew up the chest where I kept a flint and steel. So I run about 130 blocks to another portal I had made (there is at least one in each compass direction), hop out, find the stuff I need to make a flint and steel, and I'm quickly back in business.
What were creepers and skeletons doing in the Nether? I assume the Nether side portal isn't in a fortress but even if it were, that wouldn't account for the creepers.
Remember, mobs and entities can go through portals. So they probably got there from the overworld.
I appreciate that but unless they were chasing a player it's not very likely that they'd just wander into one. I also almost always build something round my Nether portals precisely so that I know what to expect on the other side when I get through my portals.
It's happened to me a few times, I just left my portal out in the open and they wandered in, probably due to them getting pushed in by other mobs.
OT: I've had my portal knocked out but I usually carry a flint & steel with me into the nether so it isn't much of a problem, it's much nicer than getting marooned in the nether

my profile picture is the A-10 thunderbolt II the successor of the first thunderbolt used in WWII by the USAF both excel in air support and ground attacks
the A-10 also sports the GAU-8 Avenger a 30MM hydraulic gatling type autocannon
Ehm... A little note for the future, Ghasts can also reignite Nether Portals as well as disable them.
Yeah, that would have worked. But I was a little freaked out because I
have NEVER been bombarded like that stepping through a portal. The other
tricky thing is that my portal on the nether side is on a platform and
falling off is certain death. So the creepers blew up part of the
platform and there wasn't a lot of room to stand. I also didn't have
very many cobblestone with me. I'm thinking a well lit enclosure around
the Overworld portal is in order.
And hence why I never understood people who just leave a portal sitting out in the open on either side. While you can do it and get by, there is always that time where the planets align and disaster is waiting to happen.
My first portal was facing a giant lava lake on one side, and on the other there was a 2-blocks Netherrack corridor leading to the mainland. Needless to say, today that same place is a pigmen-spawning proof fortress of Cobblestone.

The one on the nether side has a cover that blocks ghast blasts from hitting the portal and I replaced the nether rack immediately surrounding it with cobblestone. Sadly, cobblestone is not impervious to creeper explosion.

Figured it was time for a change.

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..

Always play safe when it comes to the nether.
