Here's a question, if you make a wall around villages and make a roof over it to protect you from spiders, will the villagers think they're in a house?
Villagers will populate to 1/3 amount of doors so make a 10x10 box with 3 villagers inside, cover it with doors, youll have like 33-34 villager in no time
Ok, so it's been proven that they will choose a house that has only one block of movement...
So now we can test a) distance, both from the nearest occupied house, and from the town centre (well) and the one I'm most interested in, a house within a house.
Also test different types of materials for house building (liquid, transparent, opaque, signs/ladders)
Doing that "box around village" thing could very possibly also help to prove the possibility of the house within house theory.
Just use any flat seed. What are the toher theories?
Villagers will mate depending on available housing. The amount of housing can be supplemented by the player placing wooden doors nearby, no walls or roofs are necessary, although one solid block less than two blocks away horizontally is necessary, or alternatively, one block above the door vertically up to 256 blocks away. A house is initiated by a block within 5 blocks of either side of a door at any height from base level (a block directly above the door does not count). Sometimes the Villager AI doesn't behave as expected until the game is restarted.
Huh, heres some good stuff to keep in mind.
So essentially, you can make "open houses" which consist of a door, and random blocks placed at specific locations. How would the villagers use this to provide protection against the big bad zombies? Or doesn't it? Are they stuck in the open thinking they're indoors?
Oh, another thing... Iron doors! Everyone has assumed just wooden doors denote houses, but has there been any specific mention that iron doors are out of the question?

You just need a pessure plate, we could also test buttons and levers
Also, it seems like we need MC edit to surround the village, or, about an hours time to clear the necessary floor

I've been building a few houses in my villages (found 2 ), trying to lead the village closer to my jungle home; they don't seem to like it, though, always going for their old houses.
There is no need for torches or enclosed space. All that is needed is a wooden door and a single block placed two spaces away. My village is full of villagers and like five golems because I made hundreds of doors. here is my seed, it has two villages, one right next to spawn and another on the other side of the desert. There are also lots of jungles: 8069386761217065645

I think Jeb increased the village requirement for golems to spawn by a lot; I've got a village with about 23 villagers in it; I've yet to see a single golem
Villagers can go to various levels of buildings, like this village tower house, as this picture shows.
There can be many villagers in one building, this is one of the villages regular large house, I just furnished it. See here.
I've made a main manor house for myself in the village. It has various rooms, levels and doors inside, which the villagers roam thoughout.
I've also made this lookout tower, villagers are at the top.
There is also a discussion of this here: http://www.minecraft...wander-off-aso/ about how more villagers are made, what constitutes a house, and shows a couple of buildings made to control the population - I think the crematorium is funny.
So Villagers go up on multi-story houses. Lets say we have an 'apartment complex', where it's one 3X3X3 house on top of another with a ramp from the outside to lead to it. If they cant enter the other houses from the insides, will Villagers see it as two different houses or one?
Test this with both the Roof of one being the floor for the other, and with there being two blocks in between each houses, please.
Not to people trying to move the villagers back to their base. I moved 2 villagers into housing I had made ~1000 blocks away. They will not breed. 2 villagers and atleast 16 doors, nothing. I have heard something about the new doors in the "village" need to be within 15 blocks of another door in th village to count as being a part of it.
Testing...

I've had to knock down some of their houses and set booby traps for them to try to reduce their numbers

I don't think golems will spawn in a village, even if you have the required 15 villagers, unless there are enough doors to warrant 15 villagers
So for those without any golem - you need 15 villagers AND 45 doors
Yes, you can in both.
