I believe it just has to be an enclosed area with a torch inside. Basically the same thing as what would count as an acceptable house for you to sleep in, but with different requirements. (It has to have a door, etc.)
i believe a house was specified as "any structure enclosed on all 6 sides(4 walls, roof and floor) and is entered through a door".
with that being said, you can probably make a structure 3x3x3, with a single door and a blocked off roof, and a villager should detect it as a home. the smallest npc village home i've seen was only 4x4x4 with a 2x2 space inside, so i imagine that as long as there is enough space for the villager to stand in (1x2x1 xyz) then it should be viable.
So essentially, we could make the most awkward places for them to live.
And what would be counted as a barrier (wall/roof/wall). Could we perhaps have pits of lava in the "house", or indoor pools. Can you make a house inside a house? Will the class bedrooms as individual houses inside the large house?
I'll now issue a challenge... What's the stupidest or most "out there" house you can get a villager to populate?
lol i might try your challenge tomorrow....
and i have no idea if a fluid floor would count, but i guess we'll have to try. perhaps if its solid and not flowing.
and bedrooms, i dont think is likely, but its another possibillity. just create 3 houses, with 1 bedroom in 1 house. spawn 2 villagers, and see if a 4th one is eventually born.
How far from the village can you build and have it count seems to be another important question. There might be a practical limit to the amount of houses one can have based soley on that. Or perhaps multiple story dwellings could support more?

I want to test all this out now... As far as I can tell, there isn't yet a list of the exact definition and conditions of a house for a villager. And also what else is possible with it... Distance would be good to know too.
But would they repopulate if you have a house say 50 blocks from the nearest house, and no other houses or obstacles in between? Would they recognize your base over the hills and far away, and try and migrate to it?I've got so many questions and theories, and I really want to test them (when I finally get my computer back!)

I made a pretty big windmill and filled it with villagers once...I might expand on it with more windmills :V
Also a sky island. That would be sweeeeet.
And the theories continue to get tested... I think I might join in
Anyone know a seed that is located close to a NPC village?
Just use any flat seed. What are the toher theories?Villagers will mate depending on available housing. The amount of housing can be supplemented by the player placing wooden doors nearby, no walls or roofs are necessary, although one solid block less than two blocks away horizontally is necessary, or alternatively, one block above the door vertically up to 256 blocks away. A house is initiated by a block within 5 blocks of either side of a door at any height from base level (a block directly above the door does not count). Sometimes the Villager AI doesn't behave as expected until the game is restarted.
So, what are the EXACT conditions for a villager to take a house? What does it classify as an acceptable residence...
And, once we know the conditions, what is the stupidest house you can make that a villager will see as acceptable to occupy?

I'm not 100% on this matter, however.
