Yup, I actually found this challenge through the original one, the one that had specific buildings for every race. I like this format, where those who try the challenge can come up with a race themselves.
I'm just gonna hope I don't end up having to construct additional pylons.

I have started my human challenge, although i have not had much time more than to just build a single house, well more like a cabin. I am planing to play possibly three or more races simutaniously in the same world. So as the stages progress there is a pseudo relationship between civilizations or enemies. A self imposed rule is to have mining fatigue 3 on at all times, 4 is a little much for my taste. It essentially slows down my combat and i love my tools 1000% more now that every resource counts. Ive banned quarries, strip mining, the wai i will obtain stone is a realistic quarry, and most ores i need will be obtained either through cave splunking or later through creating mineshafts. At least as far as the human race is going, i will figure out how i want to play the other races. Anoyher self imposed rule i made for myself is not to just instantly be able to create everything tech, unless an event happens that would benifit from the tech or if it fits the theme and i have reasonable reasons why the town or a person would create that tech.
Sorry for the wall of text i got carried away ^^ i dont known how to post pictures from my phone, or in general. So far the adventure has been a blast. It basicly puts me in someone elses mind, how would this town go forward or do things, and the other races will surely do things differently.
Glad you're enjoying it! Tech isn't supposed to be fully implemented right away, anyway. Hence the material restrictions. A lot of higher-tier machines (especially in IC2) will be restricted because they require one or more diamonds to create. You don't have to ban quarries or strip mines - unless you mean the buildcraft quarries, in which case you aren't allowed those until you're allowed iron for the first time (Stage 5, I think?). Another decent source of stone would be making a cobble generator (note that you're allowed to craft one bucket and one set of sheers at the beginning).
I also generally follow the same rule for tech, but it's more unconscious than anything. Why waste materials on something that isn't necessary? But yeah. I'm glad to hear you're having fun with it. Feel free to update with pictures when you have time! You can use Imgur as an image host.
To get images into your post, upload them to imgur and publish the "album". Then, hover over your username and click on "images". In order to show the screenshots in the order you took them, use the drop-down menus to tell imgur to sort them by filename (minecraft time stamps its screenshots). Click on an image you want to upload, and you'll see all the options for sharing it. Highlight the text under "BB Code", copy it, and paste it here. it will show up as an image in your finished post. You can have more than one (and this lets you get past the 5 attachment limit the forums have) in your post.

I wish i could play more often, but such is life. Now seems to be a good time for a journal/update thingy. Its going great, i actually love the slowed down progress by mining fatigue. So here goes. It is better if you see the pictures as you read the log
i had a great sleep in my favorite tree, i woke up and i knew i wouldn't see this place for a while. I have been preparing to head out and find a place to settle down. I left the village early in the morning, said my goodbyes, and headed out.
After a few long weeks of traveling i believe i have found the perfect place to settle, although i am not fond of the magical forest in the distance, i could not have found a better place. I built a trench under a tree to stay under temperarily till i finish my cabin
I decided to spent my next few days planting a couple apple trees and some berry bushes, they should be able to do me over untill i get a proper garden. During the next week i have started a decent foundation for a stone mine, i am sick of mining but it will all be worth it when i can put up my craft shop.
It has become increasingly dangerous the past few nights, monsters seem to swarm me every night, but i will not give up my land, i have built a watch tower that also serves as a beacon in the dark. Afterwards i have created a smeltry for refining my stone from the mine, and then started on building my workshop, everything is coming together nicely, i am in quite dire need of food though so i will have to postpone my projects.
I wish to write home however i cannot spare the time to find a nearby town, with the increasing risk of monsters along my food situation. I dont have much time to relax these days, and i am becoming quite lonely. In a few weeks i shall saddle a horse and find a town to get some rest, barter some things, and perhaps strike up some conversation.
-All houses and other buildings must be built on trees, or pillars made of wood. Farms, wells, mines and the main castle can be built on the ground
-Most Dark Elves don't worship deities (except Crimson Cultists, or very insane Thaumaturges). They do however worship their ancestors
-Omnivorous
-They are skilled magic users, but not too bright when it comes to technology
-Houses don't have roofs, except the main castle and higher level ones
Challenge Log:
Hello, whoever the hell you are. Before you start reading, let me introduce myself.
My name is Ker'Athri Uroboros. In one of the many versions of my home dimension, Athera, I was the king of Dark Elves. Well, before the Des'Nox family took over. After I was sent to exile, and basically the whole world was in a political crisis, I decided to use the last bit of arcane knowledge I had to transport me and my ship to another world.
After I successfully sailed to the shore, I could already tell I was in another Minecraftian realm. As usual I experienced the same curse I would have whenever I travelled them, so I turned into a human male, although still having my past abilities.
Just as I climbed the cliff surrounding the beach, I found a strange obsidian structure, surrounded by pillars with a chest in the middle. In there I found gold, coins and even two diamonds. I thought that now, creating a new kingdom would be easy. So as I walked the new world, I saw strange cobblestone crosses around the area. Last thing I remember is a sleeping dart in my neck and eating some dirt.
I woke up later, by a lake, surrounded by, guess what, Dark Elves. After a bit of a long talk with me trying to convince them I'm not a human, they explained how they found me two days ago, completely robbed off everything except my clothes and my cloak.
After about 10 minutes they left, declining to help me until I build at least four houses, and a food source.
I first scouted the area. There was a greatwood tree and a floating island to the north, and a village to the east.
After having to chop down some of the trees, I managed to build a simple treehouse. It didn't even have a roof, but I was lucky that there was no rain those days.
My sleep was constantly interrupted by a random witch duel below, but I knew I would probably die if I charged in with a stone sword.
The next day I visited the village. The citizens were, to say at best, utterly stupid, with some of them sleeping in the middle of the road. I guess only thing that saved them from death were a few iron golems here and there. Because of that I had no remorse stealing their torches, wool and smeltery components. How did they even know how to make those? Probably some divine intervention by their local goddess which they called "Monarch". I also found an iron pickaxe at the blacksmith.
Next few days I was busy finishing the smeltery and building a farm. The farm was simple, and I took inspiration from the easterlings' "rice paddies". However the creepers didn't seem to like it.
Then I built the well. Since I had no iron, thus no way to transport water, I played with this world's broken liquid physics. I first build a cobblestone frame in the water, then dug down from the inside. For some reason that created an infinite water source. later I added the roof.
After some digging expeditions, in which I found blue topaz, chimerite, cinnebar, coal, and just enough iron to make a bucket and set of shears, I stumbled upon a ravine. There I found essence rocks and lava, which made it possible to make the smeltery work! I still didn't know how to make iron tools so I didn't bother digging it.
At last I built three more houses, one completely made of greatwood. One of them served as a trophy room, but later on I built a seperate building for it.
After all was done, my first citizens moved in! Well, it was just three dark elves, who would later become my best friends: Elyssa, Lumia and Boruth. Elyssa was tasked as the treasurer and moved into the trophy room. The other two had nothing to move in so I supplied them with food. Boruth showed great interest in the smeltery so I made him the community blacksmith. Lumia later taught me how to bring back my ability to use magic.
And from that point, everything went to hell.
This is just stage one, and it already took way too long. I'm kinda scared about the later on ones.
Also, one question. I have another mod I want to try, called Armourer's Workshop, which literally gives you the ability to create armor and block models/textures in-game, and then apply them to items. However the main block costs one diamond and lots of iron, so can I cheat it in after I finish the first three stages?
Also, another idea. When I reach the intermidate houses part, can I just convert my old ones to them and then build that much simple houses?
Aha. I fully accept responsibility for divine intervention when it comes to villagers.
Um. The idea is that it turns into a pretty large town after a while. Poorer people live in simpler houses. As your town gains popularity, richer people move in, thus requiring better structures. So far the grand total number of houses (for the current 12-stage challenge) is 48 houses. You end up building simple houses until stage 11, at which point you build houses with a bit more class (and therefore a bit harder to make). Toward the end you'll build houses for the upper class. It really isn't that many, or, at least, not per stage.
And, as for that block requiring a diamond, if that one diamond won't be too too game-breaking, go ahead and mine it. You can use that iron pick you got from the forger. (Now that I read what it requires - Ohhh. Then wait for stage 3 and then mine that one diamond)
I think what initially makes it take so long is the lower tier tools. Granted, I did everyone a favor and skipped strictly requiring wooden tools because that's just annoying. If you can get through the first two stages, though, you'll be home free as far as tools go (sans diamond). I also allow a diamond pick later because I realize a lot of mods require nether stuff to progress forward. I didn't want to restrict that, so I decided to allow one diamond pick so you can go to the nether and make some friggin' progress.
And you are allowed enough iron for shears and a bucket from the beginning. Just makes things easier and makes keeping sheep pops up easier.
But yeah. Thanks for playing!

Hehe, yeah, i'm trying to go for semi realistic so i can immerse myself into the game. I like what you did with the dark elf houses Francisco, quite elegant. Oh yeah i'm playing on infinity if i didnt say that before. I really dont mind the slow progression, it just makes getting higher tier tools/ tech that much more enjoyable, also, should there be a restriction on redstone like as a tier inbetween diamond and iron? Or do you think thats a bit much, maybe like one or two tiers above iron so it spreads out the feelin of unlocking the next thing. Or maybe i completly missed that and you already have it. Lotta fun to work on this a few hours a day ^^
Uhm. I never really mentioned redstone or gold. If you want to restrict it, I guess you can push it back to halfway through iron, but I won't make you. I didn't really restrict them because those two things are almost always mod ingredients and are hardly ever game-breaking. And yay! I'm glad you're having fun!

So i was in the process of switching to the dwarf challenge and i had an idea, what if i played as a testificate. I mean it would be fairly interesting and the end goal might be to set up trade routes to other places and build infrastructure/create products. It might be rather fun
Uh. Sure. What restrictions do you plan to implement on yourself? What do testificates do with their lives? Will you be including hilariously failed builds (that could be fun to see)?

Hm, restrictions could be that you cannot leave the village after say a minecraft week or two. And you need some sorta protection like a flimsy wall and an iron golem. Intentionally making the buildings wacko/fail would be quite fun. Villagers love to trade so your village could produce a certain craft/product like food, building materials, or weaponry that you would fill up a wharehouse with. Then the next goal would be to set up trade paths between neighboring villages via horse paths or railway. The challenge could go on forever if you wanted to make each village make products and expand your empire to become the richest testificate ceo of all time. More restrictions may be needed.
it has been a while since my last update, Since then i have quit my challenge world, I think of it as a trial run. I moved modpacks from Infinity to Ferret business and it has been a success. I believe stretching myself out over even just two challenges was not fun so i decided to focus on just one that i thought would be very different from normal play, eskimos. I picked the seed 59 known for spawning in and around ice spikes biomes and i went from there. I am creating an story for the events but as of now its not ready.
I am making steady progress and a lot of fun, almost at the end of stage 2, self imposed restrictions are: I must accommodate the needs of the villagers, such as heat from the cold, protection from the monsters(I had a blood moon once, I almost lost the whole village) and keep things in a natural state, as in don't bring cows to Antarctica(at least until i create an artificial habitat for them) or play like i am the character, as in try really hard not to die(I fail) this mindset shifted me to use the underground tunnel system as an underground passageway when above ground is too dangerous, most important places are connected through this underground system, the places that are not i am planning to make panic rooms for. well, it might be a while till my next update, but not nearly as long as this one XP
The story may not be ready but there will be tidbits of the story in the image descriptions http://imgur.com/a/84ToC
That looks cool! How'd you get all the 3D item renders? Is it a resource pack?
I've been busy working on my TFC Castle and banging my head against a wall trying to get back in school. When I get "done" enough to post pictures of the (more or less) complete castle, I'll post some here.
Glad you're enjoying yourself!
And failing at not dying is why I need keepInventory turned on.

I mean, I could include that as a side-quest, but I don't see the need in putting that in the main challenge. If you want to decorate your city, sure, go ahead and do the side-quest, but it won't be the main event.
I'm thinking about implementing side-quests as things you can do during or after the challenge if you need a break from it (like, say you need a break from your main town to go on an adventure, but need a good excuse to do it - now you have one! "I'm completing x side-quest"). Again, though, so far most people are voting for magic, so I guess I'll figure what to do for it. I may set up a second poll to gather more info from you guys.

Hey guys! I've actually got some ideas for what to write for some of the sections so later tonight after I take care of some housework I'm going to see what I can do! Hopefully you guys will like it and have been enjoying playing the challenge so far!!
Also - I added some more mods to the list of mods you guys can play around with. I'm currently working on MineTweaker scripts to make some mods work better with TFC. So far I've got IndustrialCraft done, but I like the new processes I came up with and hope you guys will like playing around with it!
Let me know if anything is confusing to you or if you need any help getting started.
Thanks again for all your support and I hope to see you soon!

I don't mean to be unapproachable. I accept critiques and suggestions well, so please, by all means, make as many suggestions as you would like.
I need testers to help me figure out what to do. The majority vote goes to Magic, so I'll start with that.
For now I need some time to get my life in order. I've just realized I can't go back to school because of a past due balance.

I changed the answer style in the poll. Whoever voted "wizard's tower" should vote again, because it was cleared.

Great work on finishing the core challenge! Will be nice to see what else you have planned.
Thanks! Nothing planned currently - that's why I need testers and players! You guys can help me come up with new ideas for builds to add to the challenge and help me find things that need to be changed!
