TNT mining has always interested me, considering that gunpowder can be easily AFKed, and sand can easily be insta-mined using torches and gravity, I decided to experiment on TNT mining, in my opinion, if you live in or close to a deep-sanded desert or have a minecart that transports you to one, I have found TNT mining rather efficient. BELOW I HAVE ATTACHED A PICTURE OF TNT MINED TUNNEL: 32 TNT was used to make this tunnel, and considering it only took me 5-15 min to make this tunnel, its not bad, HERE ARE THE ORES THAT I FOUND AND MINED: 28 iron ore, 55 Redstone, 16 coal, and 3 flint. CONCLUSION: mining with TNT is effective if you live or have good transport to a deep sanded desert, TNT mining is also better for iron mining than branch mining (but still probably you would find more iron by caving) but caves are not endless and soon they all get explored, so you would eventually need to start branch mining or TNT mining. I also found that I find less redstone when TNT mining than when branch mining, also you are better off branch mining for diamonds than TNT mining. Many people say that TNT destroys ores/blocks but I found that when only 1 TNT is detonated at once, it doesn't destroy iron ore (I got some dropped iron ore)
If you've got a very large beach or a desert and a good creeper farm, than tnt mining is a decent choice, but as many people have said, it's very high risk. But it's good for covering a very large area in a quick amount of time. Just make sure you don't blow yourself up or other ores.

The problem with TNT mining is that about 30% of the blocks bown up will be destroyed, and won't drop their items. It's a high risk, high reward strategy, because you might lose valuable ores.
I have found that if I blow up 1 TNT at once, it ususually 80% of the time drops ores and doesn't destroy them MOST of the time, 80% to me is a good chance.
TNT isn't a good choice for mining rare blocks like diamond, emerald and gold. Branch mining is more effective at exposing ore veins. However, above the gold layer, iron and coal are common enough that TNT mining becomes a better option. Though caving is the best option to obtain iron and coal. I'd leave TNT for making tunnels and underground bases, where you can save pickaxes and time, while also picking up any ore you happen to blow up.

It is very much high risk, high reward. I would suggest using t for blowing up holes in the ground for searching for caves or ravines, but not for mining, use a fortune pickaxe.
TNT mining is fun, I'll say that much. But unless you have looting (which isn't the easiest enchantment to get), you're not going to be getting a lot of TNT considering that you need a lot of gunpowder, and more often than not, creepers don't drop it in the first place.
It's fun and looks cool but unfortunately it is just not even close to as efficient as other methods. Even if you are simply trying to do nothing except completely destroy a large volume of blocks, TNT is still far less effective than throwing a beacon up and hacking away with an Eff5 Unb3 diamond pick. Speed mining clears an incredible amount of blocks per hour including the time setting up the beacon and building/enchanting the pick. I still think if you calculated everything out that mining out blocks per hour even without a beacon would be faster and more rewarding than using TNT.
It's easy enough to get a limitless supply of gunpowder but until there is ever a way to automatically farm sand (or duplicate sand again) it will just be a novel way of mining and fun show to watch. Maybe it's good for some people because it makes mining feel less tedious and cumbersome.
I mostly use it for deconstruction, and sometimes sand gathering or trolling monsters. I haven't found that much use for TnT due to what it costs to create, the fact it could destroy any ores.

if you live in a desert, and especially if it has deep sand, you can mine down into the sand and then use torches to insta-mine and collect sand, you could get about 5 stacks of sand in about 3 min, so that's really fast for me, considering you need 3 stacks of sand to make a stack of TNT
I think that it's too much effort to go skay the creepers and get the sand, in the same time that you would've done that you would have mined many times as far than using the tnt.

I usually just mine with stone picks until I can make a set of iron armor and about four or five iron picks. Then I make random tunnels deep, close to the bedrock to look for diamonds, and whenever I find more iron, I mine it, as well as coal, and then go back to my base, rinse, repeat. After only a few ventures into a cave, I'll have a double-chest nearly full of stacks of coal, a large room carved out filled with furnaces for constant smelting, and at least five stacks of iron ingots that have yet to be used.
I don't like TNT for mining, I consider it a hazard. But, to each his own. In my opinion, it always destroys too many blocks...unless I can actively see what I'm breaking up with TNT, I won't use it. I only use it against mobs, actually. I will see a lot of mobs headed towards me and place TNT and time it so it gets rid of most of the mobs.

How is that done? I'll try that, I didn't
know of that trick though. Torches and sand? Regular torches to block
effects of gravity, or something with redstone? I'm not understanding
how that would work.
I usually only use sand for glass, but it takes so much sand to make glass...so I'd be interested in how to quickly mine sand regardless
Working on my first world! Survival map Secret World House![1.7.10]with a *close to* 1:1 (not really lol, after trying to make a computer keyboard look 1:1 in build, it's more like 0.88:1 scale of a giant house! (my house IRL). Still working on it solo, would like some help soon---it doesn't need to look like my house, framework of house still supports custom-size, shape, and layout of most rooms.
Changelog 9 May 2015:
-carved out more space from y=66/normal-y-height to y=20 to allow more room for 1st floor
-designing landscape outside of house on paper for now, will use WorldEdit to make large, smooth and life-size looking shrubberies and plants, working on a good landscape gradient from ~y=30 to y=bedrock for dirt, grass, stone, brick, etc. (walkways, driveway, greenbelt)
Dig down to where there is a non-gravity-affected block under the stack of sand. Mine one block under that and place a (regular) torch, then mine the block above the torch. The whole stack of sand will fall onto the torch, breaking as it goes and dropping all the little sand blocks everywhere. Saves a lot of wear on your shovel. It also works on gravel, but who needs gravel, except to clear it out of the way?

I don't use TNT for mining as it requires too much time to lay out the tunnels with the TNT. If I need to excavate a large space and don't have access to beacons yet it is certainly the best method to do it.
I would only do it if you are playing on a server with the mcmmo plugin

I find it is cheaper (and faster) to invest in an efficiency 4-5 diamond pick than to use tnt.
I used to have a good signature, but it got nerfed.

TNT mining is very fun, but as others have stated its not as efficient. A fortune pick with high efficiency on it is more efficient.

I'd rather use TNT for terraforming rather than mining. No one likes having diamonds go boom.

I think usually TNT mining is too complicated and inefficient.
You need a gunpowder farm. (easy)
You must collect sand. (easy, but takes time that could be spent mining)
You have to craft TNT.
Mining using TNT is complicated and slow, with a pick you can just go strainght and place a torch when it is too dark.
3x3 hole only reveals 12 blocks, 2x1 hole reveals 6
TNT has a risk of destroying the items, in long term it isn't high risk, high reward, it averages into low reward.
I usually use beacon mining, TNT can be good if someone needs a large cave for building.
I don't use TNT for mining as it requires too much time to lay out the tunnels with the TNT. If I need to excavate a large space and don't have access to beacons yet it is certainly the best method to do it.
