So what I usually do for a starter is that I make an 8x10 house out of any material (I usually use wood, but you can use any material.) I make it four blocks high, then in the gap where the roof should be, put a block IN the border of the house and then fill in the roof. It saves materials and makes the house look a bit more interesting. Then I basically put a door, windows, torches, and fill in the floor with a different type of material (I just use another type of wood). First thing I do when I spawn in is find sheep, then wood, then make my house. Remember that it can be any size you want, but plan on the amount of materials you'll need.
I find one main flaw in this. Brick is not resource friendly at all. Finding and mining clay is tedious. With that being said, you need clay for obtaining brick. Second of all, obtaining clay is only easy when you have a silk touch shovel (sometimes). Lastly, a starter home is the house you first build when you have little supplies/materials and don't have great/enchanted tools. At least, that's the way most look at it. The word starter infers that it is exactly what I said.
Resource friendly starter home materials are cobblestone or wood. Maybe some wooden logs, and if you had lots of time, stone/stone bricks. Also, if you're lucky, some glass.
My type of "starter home" is a simple 5x5 wooden house with a flat roof. Maybe a small window but that's it.

Sometimes i like to build a small house and everything else I need in small buildings close together, not very big a maximum of 10x8 blocks. You could try this and have them space close together, no more then 4 blocks apart? Just a idea!

this isent so much as a starter home like an intermediate home.
I still live in a starter home but could easily expand to a intermediate home...been playing for a little bit now
When i build a starter house, i always make sure to have the following:
-room for some storage (about 12 double chests should do in the beginning)
-room for enchanting (includes anvil and chests for books and lapis)
-room for furnaces (8 furnaces will do to start with)
-room for brewing (3 sets and some chests for bottles and ingredients)
-room for a bed
-room for a portal
Apart from this, a house is a house, it has at least 4 walls and 1 roof, the design is of course up to yourself.
then can I make a house without a floor? lol

lol... yeah, true.
Although you could just build it straight on the grass and get your feet wet in the morning dew i guess.
what would be some dimensions that would work for this?
You can for begining make wood house. Wood is best building block for making a house.
