There are only two methods that I know about to generate obsidian without turning lava into obsidian. One way is to generate nether portals and then mine them over and over and the other way I'm not even sure still works, but it involved using lava to turn redstone dust into obsidian as shown: Reading some of the comments seems to indicate it doesn't anymore.
Prior to 1.8 you could use an "undocumented feature" that some might call a bug to convert either string or redstone into Obsidian. It was not actually converting the string/redstone, but that was sacrificed during the process.
As of 1.8, that method no longer works. You can use the method suggested above by causing the creation of new portals by disabling the portal that you went through after entering or leaving the nether. I don't think that would be something that will be fixed (or even needs to be fixed) in the near future.
Depending on how much obsidian you need, it may be easier to just take a water bucket down into a deep cave and find a lake of lava to raid. If you're playing skyblock, the above mentioned method could be a good idea though.

You can always use the end platform in the end, it regenerates every time you enter the end. If you sleep in a bed next to your end portal then you can mine the obsidian and go through the portal again and mine it again fairly quickly.
creating a Nether portal which runs on a timer. You stand inside the portal and hit a button to switch it on. A redstone delay then triggers a Dropper with a Water Bucket to break the portal right as the Nether begins to load. When you travel back, a new portal is created and you can harvest it for Obsidian.

Other options include:
Having a setup where you can go through a portal in the Nether to create one in the Overworld, mine out the created obsidian, then travel just over 128 blocks to another portal to get back to the Nether and repeat.
In multiplayer, doing like what acatterz said but having a second player deactivate the portal instead of a redstone mechanism.
Going to the Nether, mining out the Nether-side of the portal, stashing your stuff in a chest (or using keepInventory), dying, and repeating.
In all cases of Nether-portal farming, be sure to leave a 4×4 flat area in the target zone with air at least 4 blocks above (either by filling in after mining the obsidian or by not mining the floor-obsidian) for future portals to be able to be created in.
Does anyone know how to make a infinite obsidian generator it would be very useful and make me very happy.
I'm older than all the people younger than me...And all the people older than me I'm younger than?
That would be a glitch/bug and I think they patched them all.
Why do you want to cheat? Just mine in the caves like everyone else.

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..

Yeah, that method doesn't work anymore.
Cast aside your festive doylaks: dragon stuff is about to happen.
Multiplayer is lonely once you understand how it actually works.
Alpha 1.0.4
Or you can just do the duplication glitch.
