I'm kind of having trouble separating different mobs. I just finished a concept that separates skeletons from other mobs that's probably new. It doesn't work perfectly, but that's not a big problem.
I'm trying to get other ideas on separating tall mobs. One idea was using the sunlight, so that it burns only skeletons and zombies, but that could only be used during the day. Although on the wiki it says (for some reason) that glowstone damages skeletons and zombies, I just tested it and it turned out false. Yes placing spawners will be the easiest solution, but I want to make it legit. Can anybody think of a good idea?
Wow, that's pretty smart. I know how you can separate pigs and chickens from the tall mobs but I cannot think of anything for the hostile mobs. Spiders are pretty obvious though.
EDIT: also, creepers move sideways RIGHT before they explode, but this isn't so helpful, as they would kill you instead of getting sorted the whole way.
I liked the video, especially at the end, when the skeletons are taking over and they don't give two shits about you, cowering behind the door.
Your separator is a good idea, and with the fixes you outlined in the video it sounds pretty solid.
I'm not sure how you'd go about separating the peaceful mobs, but I guess that sorting them by size would be the best bet, even if you can't differentiate cows and sheep.
UPDATED!!!
it works great now!! hope this helps people

Well, that does sound pretty interesting... I would like to use that idea, since I couldn't figure out anyways to separate zombies from creepers (other than killing the zombies of course)
Pretty amazing mobtrap you have there. The zombies want to hug you :tongue.gif:
I would love to hug creepers, but never zombies!
and the mob trap itself was designed using Kiershar's sky mob trap tutorial. It does take a lot of time and patience, but now that I've built it, I can test all my mob experiments here, which is pretty nice.

here is the skeleton separator
Yes, I am checking his videos. Spider and tall mobs are easy.
But he is also having a problem with separating tall mobs automatically I think.
trying to find a way to separate cows and sheep. So far not successful.
When sheep are killed, they don't drop their wool.
yeah, but isn't that the problem? You want to kill sheep yourself to collect the wool. same for cows you want to get milk from them.

Same here, very odd. So I did a google search and it's the tail end of a youtube video url.
