It depends on your y coordinate. If you are around y=6, then you are more likely to find diamond than gold, although the most frequent ore at that level will be redstone.

I actually created a video talking about the rarity of ores. The video was created to compare the rarity of ores in a naturally generated world compared to a customized 1.8 world with generation changed from level 0 to 255 for every ore.
If you look at the information I posted on the screen, you'll notice that there are actually about 3x the amount of gold ores as diamond ores.
Diamonds Generate from level 0 to 15
Gold Generates from level 2 to 29
According to the Wiki.
Now if you consider both of those facts, the displacement between two different viens of Gold and Diamond will show that there are more Gold ore blocks per chunk than Diamond blocks. (about 1.5x as many)
However, if you have a fortune III pick you'll get on average 2.5x the amount of diamonds. This means that you'll end up with 1.5x as many diamonds as gold.
Finally, as many people have been posting, most people who're looking for diamonds strip mine around level 11. This cuts out an entire section of the Gold ore generation, essentially cutting the amount of gold found in half. So eventually and in theory if you have a fortune III pick, you will end up with ~3x the amount of diamonds compared to gold.

You seem to be underestimating how much gold there is; according to this chart you should find slightly more gold than diamond if mining between layers 5-12 (note that gold has twice the range and twice the veins per chunk, with a slightly larger average vein size):
Gold is more than twice as common on a per-chunk basis, closer to three times as common in fact (about 8.2 ores per chunk vs 3.1; made relatively larger due to bedrock cutting off the low end, which has a bigger effect on diamond). Although you'll still find about twice as many diamonds if mining with Fortune III (120% increase or 2.2 times), but slightly more gold otherwise (on average).
Of course, even with Fortune III I find more gold than diamond when caving; I've mined about 5 times as much gold ore as diamond ore in my current world; the exception is when I find an abandoned mineshaft in the diamond layer, and even then only if that were all I explored during that session.
In statistics, Gold is rarer than diamonds, but sometimes you get unlucky streaks on some ores. For instance, I had a unlucky streak on iron but at the same time I had a lucky streak on diamonds, finding six diamonds in my third day with not a scrap of iron found. Had to mine two more Minecraft days worth to find iron and mine those diamonds.
Diamonds may be rare, but Gold can be hard to find
Diamonds can be mined with Fortune III iron pickaxe to drop more diamonds ( 1-4 Diamonds per ore block)
And Gold can be farmed with zombie pigman farm which is an unlimited resource of gold (but it can be hard to make since you need to slab all the Nether for maximum results and the drop only nuggets)

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?

1 Block of gold = 9 gold ingot
1 gold ingot = 9 gold nuggets
1 Block of gold = 81 gold nuggets
