Lol. If I walked around, you'd probably have an aneurysm. I just stopped mining the ores because I have more than enough at the moment. I think there are 7 exposed diamond veins with at least 24 ores.
I'm going to break this update into a couple of posts for simplicity after finishing the first section of what I consider the first real major project on the map, my nether network. So far I've added 8 portals in addition to my original. 3 of these go to villages and 5 are potential build sites. These are all in the NE section of the map which I have most recently explored. I expect to add at least another 3 portals in this area for the skeleton spawner, "pride rock", and the desert village.
The primary reason for starting in the NE section was for access to the mesa and desert biomes. I imagine I'll end up with a total of around 50 portals probably. After I finish with the NE section, I'm going to explore south a bit and decide which quadrant of my network I'll work on next.
So this post will be some random stuff, then one for the nether, and finally where all those portals lead in the overworld.
First, this is kind of off-topic as I built this on another map but I really like the build. It's on the world I was playing before starting this one. I completed about 70% of the house before starting this world, I then switched it to creative to complete the house just because I loved the terrain and design.
This house was created using the same process of framing, walling, and roofing that I use for literally all of my builds. As I mentioned earlier in this thread, the style of building gives you a lot of freedom and allows you to construct things very quickly.
The style is loosely based on this thread from the alpha:
Though I don't as far as golden ratios, true parabolas or angled perspectives.
I have also redesigned the interior of my horse barn. Apparently leashes do literally nothing to actually leash an animal, so I've abandoned them for a more permanent solution. I've also named my trusty steed.
I've also started naming some of my gear, so here's that.
After converting the barn interior. Midnight and I set off into the world... With a few stacks of obsidian we traveled the land placing portals before returning home to head into the nether.
A helpful hint for anyone attempting to build their own nether network. ***DO NOT ENTER YOUR PORTALS FROM THE OVERWORLD AFTER THE FIRST***!!!!
This is EXTREMELY important in not spawning random portals that link with your overworld portals. By placing all portals in the overworld and activating them, you are now able to place perfectly linked portals in the nether at your preferred locations.

This forum has made me decide that I now want kids, so that when they get old enough, I can forbid them from coming here. it's a terrible place.
So I headed into the nether and began work, which was quite... Tense. Apparently I've glitched the pigmen AI on this map or something, as I've never had them be so persistent in their aggressiveness. I actually had a group of them spawn on my skybridge and 1 of the 4 immediately started chasing me to attack, while the other 3 ignored me completely(until I killed the agro one). It's quite confusing to me as completely different/distant groups still agro even if I travel hundreds of blocks away through solid netherrack, while the ones near my original portal will sometimes completely ignore me. I did see what I believe is my first normal zombie in the nether though!
So you start at the original portal, climb some stairs and then theres a T which leads to the NE quadrant, or the nether fortress.
The entire thing is fully encased, so there's not much to worry about in the way of mobs except an occasional pigman. If you head down the NE quadrant tunnel, you get here.
Past the "Lakeside Amphitheatre", is the "Oceanside Stronghold", which leads to another split.
The "NE villages" is the ravine village I discovered before, and another savannah village I just found. The desert village will also get added to this line.
Down the Mesa/Canyon line is "The Pass", "Mountain Amphitheatre", "Mesa Station", and the canyon/valley village.
Currently you just have to walk it, but eventually there will be a minecart line along the entire thing with stops at each portal.

So the rails are down. I still need to glass the middle side blocks of the entire thing so ghasts don't shoot at me and then half slab it so pigmen don't spawn on it. I've created simple junctions at each of the portals so that you never need to leave the minecart while traveling. I'm still coming in hot on a few of the junctions though and jumping rails so there's still a little tweaking to do. It's not pretty, and I don't plan on making it so. My builds in the nether are strictly for function and not aesthetics, you can't really build pretty things in a "hell" biome.
The left line leads to the NE quadrant, while the right line leads to the nether fortress.
I'm not sure why I made the bridge to the fortress two wide... LOL. So I added buttons to the side without rails to keep pigmen from spawning.
The junctions are setup very simply. No redstone, just a button and some levers. I had to work around some N/E orientation issues to get the tracks to properly align with some of the levers, but they're all working as intended now.
The third junction is where the line splits(no portal), this requires two levers.
Down the village line...
Which leads to the end of this line at the Savannah Village. Down the Mesa/Canyon line you'll find the fifth junction.
The final junction(no portal) also requires two levers, ending the line at Mesa Station and the Canyon/Valley village.
The rail system was very simple to set up, requires no redstone(beyond the powered rails/torches), and allows me to stop at any portal I want along the lines without ever leaving my minecart.
I also started on the outer wall of the castle proper. I didn't want to use stone brick, so I'm using nether brick. I'm not entirely sold on it, but it's going to be brick... Regular red brick is out of the question, I'm not gathering that much clay. Which leaves sandstone or red sandstone(unless I'm forgetting some other bricks?), neither of which I think will fit the build. So I'm kind of stuck with nether brick.

Very nice. I got tired of survival a while ago, but this makes me want to get back into it.
Thanks! You totally should ;P. Most people think of "survival" as living in a cave until they kill the ender dragon. I like to take it to the next level.
That's a pretty impressive rail setup for vanilla (at least compared to the piddly things I've done with it). Keep up the good work!
Oh jeebus... I'd probably have to entirely remove the clay from multiple swamp biomes for enough bricks... As it is I may have to find another nether fortress.
I like to set up a pretty widespread influence on my worlds and usually end up with fairly large nether networks lol. Just going around and doing random different things in far off lands can sometimes get me inspired/motivated for whatever my main focus is. If I sit and build the wall for 15 hours straight of my playtime, I just burn out.
Well I decided to work on my farms some more, more specifically my chickens, I still need to build a few barns for other animals. I've never built an actual chicken coop on any of my worlds before so I really wanted to do that. Took me about 45 minutes, but I think it turned out pretty well!
I have 4 "hens" that just lay eggs into a hopper>chest, I think I may need to replace the bars with actual blocks though as the eggs sometimes dont go in the hopper(about 1/10 eggs and it's always the same chicken...). There's also a small "rooster" area where the chicken butchering will take place once I get egg spawns to cooperate, I mean not 1 chicken from ~30 eggs? Seriously?
You can go down the stairs to get all the eggs.

I decided to add another barn and get my sheep all set up. The first barn now has just sheep in it, I have every color except brown. I took the original 8 stalls, split them in half, and TA DA! 16 stalls for 16 colors of sheep. I moved the cows into the new barn and threw some pigs in there as well.
I've also added a couple ender chests on my nether rail line. There will be a chest at every portal, I'll mainly be using them for minecarts lol.
I took some progression shots of the barn so people can kind of see a little how I build.
After finishing the barn it was time to move some cows. Before that however was, "the culling"...
That got me ~2 1/2 stacks of steak/leather. Now I needed some pigs.
Apparently, while I was doing this a slime managed to climb my ladder around 70 blocks...
Having cleared out the cows, I broke the sheep off into their groups and dyed them.
I let the first pair of cyan sheep into the rear pasture to start breeding.

Did you build all walls by your own? It must have taken a lot of time.
How big is your explored area now?
I've built EVERYTHING myself in a little over a month. I average around 1 1/2 hours of playtime/day(though I play less on weekends and more on weeknights), based off my statistics adjusted for afk time. I started this world on January 1st I believe. The wall itself didn't take that long to build, but gathering all that stone takes a bit of time. This is why I'm now going to finish getting the things I need for a beacon, it should help speed things up.
I think the explored area is probably around 6000x3000ish(~450MB). I'll soon be exploring to the south however, which will probably make it more like 6000x6000 once that's done.
I actually had a pretty amazing run on some enchanting yesterday. Now I feel like I'm packing some heat...
I've been checking enchants with swords/bows randomly for looting 3/infinity and hadn't had any luck so far. I could've done without the knockback, but I finally got lucky on looting and it was a package deal. After getting the first enchant, I checked again... POW, the other was the next enchant. As a result, I had to cash in the exp for nearly all my silk touched ores. I didn't want to move more than like 10 blocks from the enchanting table! LOL. I ended up having to use ~28 levels worth of ores as I'd just spent a bunch of exp combining books recently.
I'm now determined to finish my first ever beacon by doing my first ever wither fight. I already have 2 skulls and I should have enough ores for a full beacon, with the new looting 3 it shouldn't take me long to get a 3rd skull.
After pretending I was Legolas from LotR, I dug down to where I will place the beacon. Unfortunately there was a ravine right above/next to it, not exactly what I want when I'm just trying to cut as much stone as possible...
I'm going to be streaming/recording my trip to the nether for the third skull, the wither fight and making the beacon in around 30 minutes.
If anyone was interested in watching, you can find the stream here:
Nice to see the in progress pictures of the barn. Interesting that you place all the logs vertically, like in the old days You don´t see that often. Looks good though. I like your builds. They look very authentic.
Loved this pic Taking the pigs out for a walk. They look very cute
Bummer, missed the stream. Yay doctor's visit with sick kiddos
You may not have. I started streaming and within 3 minutes, my power went out... No clue what happened, it's not raining/snowing or anything, it's not even windy... It came back and went out for no reason a couple more times but has been on for about an hour now so I think I'm ok to try again. I'm just glad it died when I was in the overworld, unfortunate things tend to happen when my game crashes in the nether...
I'll be attempting to stream again in about 15-20 minutes. I'm guessing it will take me an hour or so to get a beacon up.

Well, I'm from the old days, but I didn't think it showed lol. I linked a thread from the alpha in this thread that has probably had the biggest influence on my building, that may give you an idea of HOW old.
I also liked the pic and had to post it.

Still streaming for a bit on wither attempts after I take a ~30min break. After a few mishaps I have yet to kill it. I figured I would fare pretty well even without splash healing potions... Boy was I wrong lol. The one thing I lacked was watermelon, so I went into the old abandoned mineshaft I never finished exploring in search of some. Found some(on top of a diamond vein, it was fate). I've now set up a pumpkin/melon farm. I also enchanted two additional pieces of armor with blast protection IV to go with my protection IV gear, hopefully that will help a bit. I think with splash healing pots and the blast protection, I should do a lot better.

Finally killed the wither after 3-4 attempts. I did back up my world and reload it on each attempt though. I know some people may consider that "cheating" but I couldn't really care less lol.
The main problem I was having(despite having every buff under the sun) was that the wither would just immediately fly directly above me as soon as I pulled an arrow, knock me 4-6 blocks into the ground and just bury me with fireballs. I'd be able to hang on with splash potions, but the wither effect would eventually kill me once my regen potions wore off as it was extremely difficult to attempt to pillar out while getting smashed by fireballs. I looked at a few wither fight videos and noticed that it acted much more predictably if you didn't fight it in the open. The reason why I was having so much trouble was because I was fighting the wither here.
After seeing a few videos, I decided to spawn it next to a large sand dune, much to my benefit. The sand dune essentially glitched the withers AI. I spawned the wither and with a speed II potion, ran and hid behind the dune. I opened fire as soon as the wither spawned but since I was behind blocks with a large dune above/next to me, the wither failed to target me. Instead, it started digging into the sand directly away from me in a straight line, clearly quite angry at my cowardly attacks. Only once I got it down to half health for the sword portion of the fight did the AI target correctly, by that time I was only a few sword swings from a nether star though. I ended up taking a total of 2 1/2 hearts of damage.
Standing where the wither was tunneling towards.
Where I was standing.
Unfortunately there was a bit of chunk corruption from the earlier power outage... I'm sooooooo glad it missed my horses though, I would've been really sad then.
Here's the melon's from earlier also...
Finally, the beacon! It's haste II. All iron except the top is a diamond block surrounded by emerald.

I had one of those chunk corruptions before in my other world. You should fix it using MCedit (Though I haven't tried it myself, I just read it from some other thread). I have no such evidence, but if you continue the world without giving it a fix, the sooner you'll realize that there would be more of those chunks.

!Special thanks for TNT123BOOM for an awesome siggy! Want to read some awesome journals? Try this: Survival Journals/Worlds list
You should TNT that chunk corruption into oblivion.
I was actually thinking of building a statue in front of it and a single lava source block. Once a minecraft week I'd throw a bale of hay into it as a sacrifice to the minecraft gods with a sign saying something along the lines of "When once the gods lost power, this mountain was wrought in their fury. So we give tribute to the gods, to quell their endless rage."

I could do that, I also have a clean backup from a few days before it happened, but then I'd have to rebuild most of my nether network and everything after.
I'm sure there are probably more than a couple transposed chunks like that in the world now but I don't really see it as being a problem or worth the effort. The main issue with corruption is usually when it starts lagging, which hasn't happened. That means something serious is wrong with your world and you need to fix it if you want to try and save the world, before it spreads. Generally the REALLY bad things happen when you totally crash in the nether. The two times I've had that happen, my nether actually got transposed into the overworld and I started having major stability issues. It was pretty hilarious to just walk from a forest into the nether though, with a nether full of creepers.

Well, I got a few things done lately. The first thing I did was set off to finish my NE section of the nether by adding the 3 planned portals, which turned into 5 actually LOL.
I decided to leave Midnight at home and just use my new nether travel system. In about 2 minutes, I was already almost 3000 blocks from my base. I headed off toward my first portal, "Pride Rock".
Then I went and added a portal at the skeleton spawner in case I ever want an arrow farm(not likely with my new infinity bow). While trying to find the desert village for the 3rd portal I ended up getting a little lost and remembered a great feature of rendering my worlds, you get the x/z coordinates of wherever you mouseover. This let me find the village rather quickly, it was a bit further out than the X: 4000 I thought at 4600.
After adding that portal, I decided to take a boat back home after looking at the map and hopefully save some time. On my way back I found this...
So naturally, I put a portal on the nearby island. I kept on going and by some miracle came across... THE FIRST MOOSHROOM BIOME I'VE EVER FOUND MYSELF! Sorry for the night pics.
I had enough obsidian left for exactly one portal, so I put it down and headed home. Once I saw Pride Rock, I knew I was almost there.
After getting back, I decided to add another double chest of stone bricks to the city wall. Here are a few current renders also.
I was also messing with cave renders. Despite the enormous size(the overworld render is 4.5GB, yeah GB, the cave one is only 2.5GB) and time spent on the renders, there are a lot of benefits. The coordinates are extremely helpful in not only finding my village, but could be used as a dungeon finder if I ever needed it. I had my mouse over the right dungeon in the below screenshot, you can see the coordinates in the bottom left. I tried to look for a stronghold a little but I don't think they render, ocean monuments are another story.
The colors are the general height levels. Green near the surface, yellow in the middle layers and red as the deepest layers.
So now I'm getting to the point where I start to get distracted on too many projects and never end up finishing what I want. With so many projects, what should I focus on now? I'm not going to do a poll or anything but I'll note any responses over the next week as a vote, whatever gets the most hype is what I'll be building. The choices are...
1. Keep working on the city wall. Yeah, it's boring, but it's gotta get done!
2. Work on the outer castle wall. Maybe end up getting another beacon while farming netherbrick?
3. Finish safety proofing my nether rail system so I don't have to worry about mobs. Who's scared of mobs though?
4. Guardian farm. Please god, no...
5. Skeleton farm. Eh, I guess it could help?
6. Build at one of the nether portal locations. The Pass, Lake/Mountain Amphitheatres, Oceanside stronghold, Mesa Station, Pride Rock.
7. MOOSHROOMS! This will be an island filled with elevated modern style houses.
8. Enlarge one of the villages. Horse Ravine, Valley/Canyon, Savannah, Desert.
9. Start building the lighthouse. Will be modeled after the Lighthouse of Alexandria.
10. Start building the harbor.
