So there I was, mining away at layer seven (as I usually do). Suddenly I hear static. Assuming it was just from my headphones, I keep mining forward. The static gets louder and louder... and just as I dig myself out of some gravel (which fell on and around me), the image of the Elder Guardian pops onto my screen and I become afflicted with Mining III. As much as I wanted to retreat out of that tunnel, the Mining III affliction kept me trapped. In the end I was forced to switch to Peaceful mode (to despawn the Elder Guardian somewhere above me) then wait for the affliction to end...
So how far (in blocks) is the Elder Guardian's range? I also thought he couldn't track me through so many blocks...
50 block radius. Intervening blocks make no difference. Since the bottom of the monument is at Y=39 and two of the elders are in rooms at the lower level, it's very likely that they'll be able to affect you if you happen to be mining under the monument.
BTW, it's still possible to break blocks while affected by Mining Fatigue III. It just takes 370 times longer than normal to mine a block, so 333 seconds (just over 5.5 minutes) to mine one block of gravel bare-handed.
hey i have a question about these under water temple things. Do they have any use AT ALL? i went in there and found nothing but spawners and 2 big squares. is there any chests? and blocks? anything at all? or is it just a waste of time so you can't mine?

They do! Well... Sorta...
One major thing is that you need to kill all 3 elder's before you get any usefulness out of them.
One thing useful about the structure is if you're lucky, you will find sponge! It's the only place to get it! (Water absorbing FTW!)
Don't forget that in the middle of each monument are 9 golden blocks... So finding one = Enchanted golden apple!
Due to the high spawn rates, and the fact that they can spawn any time, it's a good source of experience, and a decent source of fish if you haven't defeated the Ender Dragon yet.

so you can kill the elders? how? they just randomly appear then disappear in less than 3 seconds.

That's just their 'mystical "amazing" power'... There are actually three of them hidden in each monument.
It their warning to say "Hey, your too close to our maze-like monument! You're ganna have to find your way to us!"
The purpose of it is so that you don't just mine your way to them. You have to find them before your water breathing potion runs out... Other wise... You drown! Yay...
You must defeat all three of them in order to be able to do anything there...

oh how wonderful! that's definitely not a waist of time..... so in other words, kill the guardians, find a way to breath, then mine the golden/diamond blocks

Sure... If you put it that way... If you're into decoration, the blocks look pretty cool, gold blocks isn't much of a reward, but one thing is the amount of guardians that spawn, perfect for experience. Plus, if your extremely skilled, you can keep one as a pet.
Oh well, if you don't like them, it's ok, but I suggest giving them a try, if you haven't. Jeb said to go with at least diamond armor.
Yes, I always wanted an over sized fish that could kill me.
I have seen people do this, and enjoy it, I even seen a thread a while back just dedicated to this. It's a really big challenge, and that's why I think they enjoyed it. I actually might try this one day. I hardly ever challenge myself on Minecraft.
thanks for the heads up. btw how would you keep on as a pet. maybe i could put a nametag on it, then pput a lead on it. that's assuming you can put a lead on hostile mobs.

Sadly, hostile mobs aren't fond of leads... So no, you can't... It's really hard, I'v seen people transport them by Nether, and with the fact that they deal high damage, and when in the open, you are constantly being attacked... even with diamond armor and good enchants, it would be more of a challenge you would do after you have pretty much done everything you possibly could in minecraft. You can put a nametag on it, though. You should watch a video or two about it. It's interesting, but again- extremely difficult.

There are 8 gold blocks in there (a 2×2×2 cube), not just 4.
I wouldn't bother to farm Guardians for experience when I could build an Enderman farm in The End instead, since you can't safely just punch the Guardians. The spawn rate isn't any higher than normal, either, it's just that a monument doesn't have as many caves nearby to fill the spawn cap with other hostile mobs. But I do like getting Prismarine and Sea Lanterns (fish are meh, an auto-chicken-farm is easier for food and a semi-auto fishing hole can be placed somewhere more useful if you're going for Pufferfish).

Sorry, my mistake, i'll correct it (No wonder I had 12 when I did a double-monument raid)
You have some true points about farming, but it's preference... And if whether you have even gotten that far yet..
And food wise, I consider that a bit of a bonus. True nothing to farm for, but again, it's my preference... I also don't like farming hostiles, and didn't mean farming. I meant just actual combat.

this is exactly the challenge i am looking for. maybe i can keep minecraft interesting this way. i already have a perfect idea that will trap it in my dome. and a nametag will keep it from despawning. but first I'll have to find or bring in a nametag.

Y'know? I bought Minecraft because I thought it was a war game where you had to create tactically placed proximity explosive devices...

1: It's so large that it goes from the bottom of the world to the build height limit...
2: It's made of gold blocks and...
3: It's main hidden treasure? Blocks made of diamond.
