Sadly, this game is no longer fun for me anymore. Not that it is a bad game, but that it has simply lost so much wonder and excitement to me. I've been playing Minecraft for nearly four years and it has grown in all that time. Honestly, I remember the days when making your first house out of dirt and wood was considered amazing.
I look at old screenshots of the game and think of old times on servers and wonder: "What happened to that feeling?" It rings true, what happened to the feeling of early Minecraft. I was younger then, have I simply just grown out of what used to be my absolutely favorite game? Have I simply stopped enjoying Minecraft due to the fact that my tastes have changed?
Maybe, but then why do I look back and feel such a fond sense of nostalgia at the memories this game has provided. Remember the old alpha and beta terrain generation? Remember how it could sometimes be so awe-inspiring? Remember when we all would wait week after week just so we could keep up with the next Shadow of Israphel. The builds we would see would nearly bring us all to tears with their shear beauty.
Or how about the first time I figured out how to install texture packs. Oh, how the game opened up to me then. The stories I created whenever I first went into multiplayer. The memories that came from spending long nights with friends in our server just building on some small project we were working on. I guess the point of writing this is to acknowledge that I miss this game. I wish it could live up to what it used to be and give me that same sense of general awe that it had back then.
My answer is the same as shocker. I have only played this game for about a year (that is a long time, but it is nothing compared to 4 years lol). Just take a break form the game, and you will eventually miss it again
I got bored of the game after about 3 months playing it, so I decided to start doing YouTube just to spice things up for fun. It really does help me in keeping my interest in the game. You might want to try it just for fun (you can link the videos to your friends and show your progress/ creations), but again it's up to you

I went through the same thing. I've been playing Minecraft for a little over 2 years, or there abouts. Around the time of 1.5, I started to really lose interest in the game. I honestly don't think it has anything to do with all the changes. Change is good. The foundation of minecraft has never changed. At it's core, it's still the very same game. As far as nostalgia goes, that can be said with any single game you play that's ever changed in it's life span. That's how our brains work.
Hell, I miss World of Warcraft when it was first released back in 2004. That game is a shell of what it used to be during it's vanilla days, and during their 1st expansion. Others will disagree, but that's why we all have our own opinion, and our tastes vary from person to person. Same can be said about some of my favorite shooters like the battlefield series. I loved BF1942, Vietnam and BF2. I still play Battlefield 4 once n' a while and I always miss the old days of BF2 because I had such great memories there.. but you know what? I'm willing to bet that a few years from now, I'll look back and miss Battlefield 4 as well. That's just how nostalgia works.
Best thing you can do, is either take a break from the game and try out other games that interest you, or try to find a different source of inspiration within minecraft.
Anyways, as well as the suggestions made above, I suggest adding mods into your game - they will surely spice up your experience (and that's partially why I haven't lost interest in the game yet).
I played this game for pretty much six months straight. I got mega bored and didn't play for a whole year. One day I looked at the Minecraft icon and clicked on it for the first time in a year, and I was faced with the fresh new 1.7.2! I've not stopped playing it since.

Yep they no longer know how to play "minecraft legitly". Some peeps only knows how to play minigames.. but survival? nope xD. That's how I lost my "fun feeling" for minecraft. Everytime I invite my friends to play survival or creative with me but they answered "it's too boring" Faction server = 50/100 before, 97/100; Minigames server = 1337/2000 , before it was never popular back then 2012.
Same thing here, the solution: mods. Mods never finish! It's just so much better. Start small, then work your way up to Gregtech (my favorite mod,) if you like tech mods, if you like exploration, get Metallurgy for ores and a few custom dungeon mods. Trust me, booting up IC2 for the first time is like booting up Vanilla for the first time, same nostalgia and everything. I still feel more nostalgia for booting up Tekkit for the first time than for booting up Vanilla (though I still feel tons for option 2.)
We miss the players cause of noone knows our game sadly and we put so much effort in it over the last three years. We started an independ minecraft project and coded minecraft completley new. We do not use bukkit, spigot, plugins, forge and all that stuff. We do not update minecraft like mojang, we rather code the ideas of the community directly into minecraft. But hei as long as nobody downloads the launcher of us and gives it a shot, yeah. Nothing more to say maybe images help you to realize.
I have been playing this game for 2 years now. I bought it on a boring raining saturday (hey, 20 € for some entertainment for the weekend is well spent) and it got me hooked until now. Every time, it became boring, I looked for a new challenge
- Hardcore
- Automation/Redstone
- Mods
- Skyblock (Normal and Hardcore)
- More than those 30 boring easy challenges on skyblock (a lot more possibilities on modern versions)
- Create my own modpack
- Set up my own (modded) server (not buying, but create my own VM and create some puppet classes to deploy MC etc...)
- Playing REALMS with some nice people
I have not yet reached the "My, what could I do next" phase yet, but I assume, going back to some antique games for Nostalgia for a few weeks or months would be my solution. Age of Empires (8 players), Neverwinter Nights... So many things to do

It's summer in a little more than a month.
At least in the northern hemisphere.
