It's been a while since I posted here, please forgive if this is in the wrong section.
I've built a mob farm above 128 and it doesn't seem to be spawning anything. The design worked when I built it in creative, and I've copy-pasted the farm into another world and it worked fine, so I know the design is alright. The farm only stops working in my survival world.
The issue isn't that the mobs aren't dying, they're just not spawning. Two or three will spawn every 10 minutes or so, but that obviously isn't right for a mob farm with almost 1000 spawning spaces.
Here's the drop chute
Here's what the spawning pads look like (normally without torches)
I built an antenna, but I'm not sure if that's necessary in this version of Minecraft, as all the other forum posts that mention antennas are years old at this point. Here's a picture of that
I've been out of touch lately, so this design might be outdated. I spent 6 hours building this thing yesterday, so I need it to work so I don't go crazy
There are more layers, and the wiki specifically states that signs no longer work.
Light levels inside are at 0. The half slabs block the light while allowing you to see through.
My AFK area is 25 or so blocks below the lowest spawning platform.
It normally is completely dark, I just put torches for the picture
There are more floors above that one, I just put trapdoors on the bottom floor for consistency.
EDIT: Render distance increase from 8 to 12 seems to have helped. I'll run some tests.
Cool about getting mobs now.
I have the vague impression that trapdoors don't fool mobs into stepping off anymore in 1.8, so you might want to check on that (and please tell me if I'm wrong!)

Trapdoors do work. Getting good rates now. Thank you for your help

Other things to check off:
Player should be 24-32 blocks away from the spawning surface (for "passive" style mob spawner.)
Needs to be dark on the spawning surface. Any light diminishes spawns and more than 7 light level will be no spawns.
Do not need antennae (that was an old bug I think.)
Do not need trapdoors as long as the fall into the water canal is 3 blocks drop or less.
