So i was building a platform-like thing on the side of a cliff, but I discovered at night that mobs could easily just walk off the cliff and fall on to enact their sadistic revenge for their fallen brothers upon me. So i walled up the top of the cliff with cacti, which stopped everything but spiders. They hurt themselve in the process, but still got over. Now I really don't just want to build a wall with a lip because that looks pretty ugly.
So what do you suggest for preventing spiders from crossing?
Build a second row of cacti behind the first (not necessarily a wall, maybe every other block), so the spiders hurt themselves more, possibly to death.

That's what I had, it was a little like:
which stopped other mobs but spiders just climbed over and took the damage.

Ah, I see now. I thought you had a wall like this:
So I was suggesting making it like this, so the spiders have two walls to climb:
It may be resource intensive, and a bit unsightly, but this would do the trick I think:
You'd probably need more space between the two walls to ensure the spiders don't jump the gap, but you get the idea.
