I'm looking for a place to settle in my first survival mode game, and I need to go far. The close biomes aren't what I need. It's either desert, jungle, or stupid spruce.
Anyways, what do you put in your inventory before a long (veryyyy long) journey? Looking to pass at least 10,000 blocks. I'm in hard mode.
I have full iron armor and two stacks of pork chops. Should I even bother getting a bow and arrows? Anything else I should consider?
EDIT: Anything you would consider when finding terrain to start a large medieval city? I was going for a flat but I want mountains in the background, at least.
1-2 stacks of cobble. Building across a mountain valley is much easier than going down than up.
A large food source. Mushrooms + Bowl is a good idea, but any large amount of food should do. Your pork is great.
Wood and Coal. The amount needed depends on the circumstances. If you don't think you'll ever need a trail, just go with around 16 coal and 6 logs. Should give you enough so that you can see at night, if you don't have a bed for travelling. You could go without both if you sleep through the night/fight through the night.
Axe, Pick, and spade. Don't need to be a high-quality, just have them in case you need to gather something.
The bow ins't needed unless you want to travel at night. Personally, I wait out the night or sleep, but you can keep going if you like.
Signs. You may want to mark trails to items of interest you find along the way, like villages. You could also write down the cords of such places.
That's the basics of it, I'd say. Feel free to add or remove things.

My avatar-Madison Gotha. She knows various weapons, she's a mage/sage, and is somewhat immortal. Madison has the capability of taming and communicating monsters, a genetic trait passed down by her father. 26 physically, 1400-something mentally, and a Lofty Peakian/Zenithian mix. Doesn't really like being called an elf and hates being called human..
I might be Moderator, but don't bother treating me too special. And don't make tons of Ban Hammer jokes, please. Also, I'm an Off-Topic only Mod. Don't ask me to lock a thread or something if it's not in the off-topic
Well, the fact that I use a couple of mods that add different kinds of backpacks (Forestry and Backpack Mod, to be specific), I can carry a lot of stuff. In fact, I have a lot of stuff that I always carry but not as much for specific reasons.
Since there is so much, I'll give a summary.
First, I carry several backpacks from Backpack Mod. Most of these have specific colors (the backpacks from that mod can be colored using dyes) which I use in the sorting order for Inventory Tweaks to have them in the order that I want them.
One contains common suplies such as food and charcoal as well as two water buckets. Another contains useful tools such as shears, leads, and a ruler (from MineFactory Reloaded). A third contains building materials such as oak wood, smooth stone, and glass. There are a couple of others, but their contents aren't as important.
I also carry a few Forestry backpacks. There are different types of these that can each only hold certain kins of items and blocks; however, these backpacks automatically store those items and blocks when I pick them up. I carry a "Miner's" backpack (minerals, ores, and ingots), a "Digger's" backpack (dirt, cobblestone, and other "bulk" blocks from digging), and a "Forester's" backpack (plant items and blocks such as flowers and wood).
I carry one or two stone pickaxes and stone shovels, one stone axe, and a stone or iron sword. I usually have my pocket computer (from ComputerCraft) with me as well; if it isn't in my inventory, it's in my tools backpack.
I carry one stack of dirt, two stacks of oak wood, and two stacks of cobblestone. I also carry many sticks (usually around 3/4 stack) and torches (I try to keep at least 3/4 stack of these as well).
I also have a chocobo (the big birds from Final Fantasy that are ridden like horses) from ChocoCraft that has saddle bags. My chocobo's saddle bags always contain a backpack with "exploring supplies" such as oak and rubber (from MineFactory Reloaded) saplings, wheat and gysahl (from ChocoCraft) seeds, and some building materials for a shelter. It also often has my "combat gear" backpack which has melee weapons, bows, quivers (from Better Archery), and arrows as well as often some javelins (from Weapon Mod) and a couple of boomerangs (also from Weapon Mod).
My chocobo's saddle bags also usually contain a couple of stacks of oak wood and a couple of stacks of cobblestone. I like to have about 3/4 each of chests, crafting tables, and furnaces to have those pre-made for convenience.
Finally, my chocobo's saddle bags always have a stack of gysahl greens (also from ChocoCraft) which are used to heal chocobos (and to tame them, but that's not too relevant when I already have a chocobo). That way, if my chocobo takes some damage I can heal it. They have plenty of health (15 hearts maximum) and take reduced fall damage (their fall damage starts a few blocks farther down than for normal mobs) but I like to have the safety of being able to heal my chocobo whenever it takes some damage.
So, yeah. That's a rough summary of what I carry around. The stuff in my chocobo's saddle bags is really what comes into play when I'm exploring, though.

The source of my intention isn't really crime prevention; my intention is prevention of the lie! Yeah, welcome to the Scatman's world!
I always take: 2 stacks of cobble stone, 2 stacks of wood, 4 stacks of charcoal or coal (to place torches along the way), a bed, 4 stacks of beef or another saturating food, pick, sword, full set of armor, and 1 stack of iron.
Try to keep as much space free in your inventory as possible. Some of the above items might not be needed for example 4 stacks of charcoal are only needed if you want to spam torches everywhere.
Tools/Weapons: Sword, Pickaxe, Shovel, Axe, Bow and Arrows (optional)
Armor: At least full iron but I prefer having Diamond Boots with Depth Strider III and Feather Falling IV as they help you a lot.
Food: Beef or Pork, if you have the gold to spare you can also make Golden Carrots as they have the best overall food value (that is hunger bar + saturation), at least a stack of food if not two. If I do happen to run out of food it isn't that hard to find food while exploring as you run into plenty of animals on your way.
Other: Cobble (two stacks should be good), Logs (A stack is enough), Coal (also a stack, more is no mistake though), Water Bucket (keep it on your bar if you are near lava), Bed (obvious reasons, just make sure to note down the coordinates of your main base), Extended Speed Potions (fill the rest or a big part of your inventory with those, if you have access to potions), a Boat (because crafting one when you encounter an ocean just takes too long... and you WILL eventually encounter an ocean).
I've been on a looong journey trying to find a Mesa biome. (No luck so far). I'm out West around (-176,448, 64, 61299).
Since I don't use mods (believing I should play within the constraints the game designers give us), I use an Ender Chest to boost the amount of inventory I have. I had a lot of Ender Eyes handy so in my Ender Chest I keep:
More Ender Eyes to make more chests as needed
Plenty of Nether Wort, Blaze Rods and Golden Carrots
Spare food
Feathers and Flint to make more arrows if needed
Redstone
Empty bottles
Blocks of iron (I have accumulated a lot of iron on this journey for some reason)
Diamonds, emeralds
Wither skulls (I have 9 now!)
When I cross land and come up against water, I build a Portal and start crossing the Nether. While in the Nether I always have:
Night Vision potions
Flame Resistance potions
This makes crossing the Nether pretty safe and easy. Eventually I'll build a new Portal and pop out into the Overworld.
In my regular inventory I have: sword, bow, arrows, water bucket, food, shears, axe, shovel and pickaxe in the hot bar.
I carry a bed, Obsidian, a stack of Ender Chests, a clock, and frequently a saddle and horse armor in case I find horses or donkeys and can speed up the exploration. I keep a steady supply of coal handy. Do use the trick of putting down the bed when the sun is setting, sleep, get up and take the bed with you in the morning. Waiting out the night is an exercise in patience and I'd rather be exploring!
Having Ender Chests really helps. You have a lot more flexibility in what you carry, and you will find things along the way (like a Fortune 3 enchanted book) that you'll want to keep.
Things you should not worry much about carrying are the real commodities like wood and cobblestone. They are so easily obtained that when I need to make room (like, when I'm looting a Nether Fortress and need more space in my inventory for loot) they are the first to get dumped. Things you can easily fashion from commodities like work benches, ovens, boats, etc. you also don't need to worry about carrying.
In short: as a rule of thumb, carry the things most important for survival (weapons, tools, bed, food) and then carry the rarest things (diamonds, potion making stuff). Then see how much inventory you have left.
Anyways, what do you put in your inventory before a long (veryyyy long) journey? Looking to pass at least 10,000 blocks. I'm in hard mode.

I hadn't even thought of this! Excellent idea.

Hope this helps!
2. Torches (and supplies to make torches); carry however much you expect to use
3. Cobblestone; it's useful for both building travel bases (to wait out nights) and for tools
4. Food. Because you need to eat things
5. Armor; better not to die and have to find your stuff again, right? Small investment, large payout.
With your tools you can resupply on wood and cobblestone (and as a result, tools and torches)
Tools/Weapons: Sword, Pickaxe, Shovel, Axe, Bow and Arrows (optional)

An Ender Chest and a Silk Touch pick for helping store all the goodies you find.
