I have a pretty good one-citizen community going on in my world; there are farms, a few mining shafts, a lookout tower, a boathouse/docks, and a really ugly house.
It's seriously just a box with an awkward looking roof and windows because that's all I know how to make. I'm not a natural born architect...
I'm wondering if you guys could help... I know there are centuries of collective experience with Minecraft between all of you.
Add multiple stories that don't directly line up with the bottom story (add decks, cutoffs for a more interesting roof, use multiple blocks (cobblestone bottom/brick top, etc.). Really, you don't need to be an architect to do this, I sure as hell am not one, lol.

Thanks for the tips... I guess I'll just make the boathouse my temporary home while I completely destroy my old house =P
I'm sort of going to go for a quirky, fantasy look, I think. Think The Burrow from Harry Potter. I don't know how well it will go lol

Practically, I would consider spreading it out a bit more. Trust me, climbing up and down ladders all day gets to be VERY annoying. What I always liked was building houses on elevation changes (hills, into the sides of cliffs, over rivers, etc.). I'm not naturally very good at designing houses either, and it usually requires me to do a lot of tweaking, but what does help a lot is if you can build your house on interesting landscapes that instantly cover up your lack of detail on an actual house (and then you can sometimes get more ideas on how to proceed from there).

There is an interesting hill a ways away... that's pretty much all though, I settled in a tundra lol. I think I might build on top of the hill, then, and have it overlooking the area below. It will be a bit far away but that's fine.
Fences are your friends. You can use them to make portcullises (Not sure what the plural is, feel free to correct), lattices, poles, trimming, as windows, balconies... Fences are awesome :biggrin.gif:
Stairs are also incredibly versatile. Use them to make sloped roofs with overhangs, use them for shelves, use them in conjunction with half blocks to create pathways with a defined border, or inside your house for a room with a "skirting board". Use them to border the outside of your house.
Basically keep throwing ideas out there. I can only speak for myself, but my designs are a result of trial and error, finding out what like the look of, and expanding out. And remember; we all started out in a 6x4 dirt house at some point :tongue.gif:
If you have a large structure, like forty blocks across or more, it might be worth your while to have a turf roof. the first roof of my base is covered in grass as a friendly mob spawning area. The forty blocks is both to give a good surface area and so that there's a good chance some of it will be outside your "safe zone": a 24-block radius around you where nothing will spawn unless it's from a dungeon. Bring the grass up with dirt stairs, which can be removed after it spreads up there.
Smooth stone can give a monumental look to large structures. At small scales, it's not so wonderful, but still not bad. Obsidian fortifications take forever to do, but look boss and are highly functional. Digging deep and conquering caves will give you lots of beautiful blocks to decorate your places with, like lapis lazuli, gold, iron, and mossy cobblestone.
Here's a kinda standard list of interesting things to live in:
-Castle
-Log cabin
-Plank cabin
-Tree house
-Fortified hilltop rebuilt so no monsters can climb up
-Sand castle
-Pyramid
-Igloo
-Cave
-Partially hollowed out mountain
-Hobbit hole
-Glass dome under the sea
-Statue of oneself
-Statue of a creeper, pig, or other mob
-Any of the above on a floating island, or just the floating island itself.
-Nether fortress

Also, box-shaped houses are boring. Add more rooms, diagonal walls, etc.
take the generation # and add 1. Put in your signature.

How to not die in a cave
My world has sort of a fantasy medieval theme (I have an rpg texture pack), so I think I'm going to build a castle. It might take awhilelol
