1.) Get a lot of bonemeal
2.) Plant your sapling
3.) Now ask yourself how big do you want your tree to be? I like mine extra huge.:wink.gif: Build a 1X (?) column right next to the sapling like this.

The flower is the sapling. You can build your column as tall(I think 14 or 15 is the max) or as small(1) as you'd like, but I've found that column size is directly proportional to the tree size! :biggrin.gif:
4.)Now keep right click on the tree with bone-meal. It may take a while, but a big tree will grow eventually.
EDITTT
Okay, i've discovered something new. Building a column wwill only INCREASE the chances of the tree growing tall. This is because the tree can still grow AROUND the column. For example:
Adding another column increases the chances of a tall tree even further, because there is even less space for branches to grow outward. To ENSURE a tall tree, you have to build a full tube around the tree, leaving a hole at the bottom to feed the tree bone meal.
WARNING
The sapling may uproot and become a grab-able item. Do not fear. Just replant and keep trying. It will grow eventually. I promise.
This is a good way to create a giant tree house like i am doing!
So do you break a little window in the bottom of the tube to be able to reach to apply the bonemeal?
No! Originally it was a 2 dimensional tube. More like a single column on two sides of the tree. But i realized you only need ONE single column. So I edited the original post.
Also, I've discovered from the minecraft tree wiki that if you only have a 2 block tall column, it will grow into a big tree due to the small tree needing more space at a lower altitude or something like that. But i like to make the column tall to guarantee a really big tree!
Another tip!
If you want really leafy trees. you can grow a tree, chop down the trunk and then grow another tree in the exact same spot. The leaves won't get in the way of another sapling growing
There is a great tree-topic around here somewhere, where this has been done before and also explains why
When a tree decides to grow, it rolls a dice to see what it would like to be, normal or big. If it's a normal one (which is more likely) then it checks a 5x5 area around itself starting 1 block up and ending 4 to 6 blocks high (depending on how high it wants to be) if that area is occupied by anything else then air or leaves. It fails.
If it decides to become a big tree, it only checks vertical space which has to be a minimum of 6, each 'branch' is checked seperatly.
This means 3 things.
1. You can force small trees by putting a block at the 6th level so the big-tree-check will fail.
2. You can force a large tree by putting 2 blocks besides the sappling. (more doesnt matter)
3. Sapplings will grow just fine in 1 block deep holes.
It's been a while since i've read that threat so maybe some things changed with the new shadows/ lighting etc, but i doubt it.
More does matter, because it is impossible for certain height of tree to grow if it is surrounded by a higher tube. So if you build an 8 high tube, the tree can't be 6 tall, which is the smallest size of a "big" tree. It will take more bonemeal tries, but it will force a bigger tree.
**EDIT**
Alright I just had tree branch go straight through my dirt column. I'm not sure what happened there.
I know you didn't intend it that way but I lol'ed at the large tree as your last picture. You're talking about more blocks making a bigger tree and then bam! a huge tree house.

Instant treehouse :smile.gif:

Im pretty sure this isnt true. I've had several small trees (4-5 blocks tall) grow right next to columns that are 5 or 6 blocks high. So maybe they updated it in 1.3, or maybe the information wasn't correct to begin with. I'm not sure
Quickest way to get big trees for tree houses is simply plant normal trees in a circle with whatever diameter you want. Use bone meal to grow them all and then level the tops of them, drop down some dirt, plant trees on top of the trees, bone meal again, and replace the dirt blocks with logs when the second tier of trees grow. Rinse and repeat.
I always put a ring of dirt around the sapling at the 4th block above the sapling to grow larger trees. Like this:

That seems legit, but why the fourth level? I'm wavering back and forth between the idea that taller tubes=taller trees, because a tree branch just grew through my dirt column. I was under the impression that trees could not destroy dirt, and thats why the tube/ring/column method worked because it wouldn't let any small trees grow due to the horizontal clearance requirement around the second level, and branches couldn't grow wherever the tube was so there was a higher chance of the tree being taller But now I'm just confused.

the dirt is on one side of the tree.
While this idea has occured to me, I never tryed it out...
I gotta see if this works... :biggrin.gif:

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..

That's what she said.
I've been waiting for someone to say this
