Hey I was just wondering how much memory minecraft uses while you have it running? Mine uses 700MB of memory almost all the time, is this normal? Any way to decrease it? Maybe some issues with Java?
It's just the chunks constantly generating and the files having to be read over and over.
Also it could do with some optimizing.
Yeah, but im on a laptop, 2GB RAM, so optimizing, would mean to open up the machine and modify the motherboard and make sure anything I add is compatible.

Dangerous stuff
RAM sticks are easy to change, even on a laptop. Most have a panel specifically for this, which can be removed with just one or two screws.
Seems to be a memory leak at the moment, IMO. I'm on Windows XP, and javaw.exe eats up memory until it's using around 1.2Gb and then Minecraft freezes for me and the only way to release it by ending Java from the task manager.
Ah well, beta is beta. It's annoying but I'll live.
Minecraft is a game in beta. Memory usage is probably one of the things that could use some fine tuning. Java isn't the best platform to use if you want to control memory usage, but you really can't blame the Java Virtual Machine this time. Doing so is ignorant.
Minecraft keeps track of a massive amount of blocks. The memory requirements is probably higher in Minecraft than with most modern "high polygon count" 3d games.
On Windows 7, it can use up to 1.1-1.2 gb of RAM. On Ubuntu, it uses at least 2GB of RAM on the same machine which is my laptop. On Ubuntu, my franerate is around 700-800FPS (Far/Fancy) and on Windows it is around 200-500. I think unused RAM is wasted RAM.
Just need to know i'm not the only one.
You can always buy more ram it's cheap these days so it's not a big deal. Better to have to much than not enough ram.

Save File Corrupt/Disappears?
Well it's not actually a problem for me RAM-wise, it's just bothering that whenever I play minecraft, every other application becomes slower.
I play many PC Games, mostly shooter games, and they reach at about 300MB Max, but minecraft somehow totally overpowers it.
I don't notice a slowdown with other programs while minecraft is going.

Plug and play, man. Plug and play.

Like anime? Try Visual Novels.
But yeah, optimizing it like that would be the last thing on notch's list to do I think, since not many people are complaining about it.
