Probably from my twitter conversation with him about it as a drawing implement. Not saying he's going to make it INTO a drawing implement, but we had a conversation that lead into making wood into charcoal.

What is the point of the new lantern system? Nobody really wants it...
i do. Survival should be survival, not how magnificent of a structure you can build. Building in survival should be strategic not aesthetic.
In addition there should be starvation, exposure ( freezing) weight limits( which would actually give you a reason to build a mine cart( i've never found a reason to build one.).
Peaceful/creative mode should allow one to build whatever structures they like
In this post: Ignorance.
I don't enjoy having an infinite stock of ingredients at my fingertips. Minecarts are good for fast travel and automatic banking/storage systems. Weight limit? Haha, no. Unlike you, I don't like living in a 5x5 hole underground. I like having houses. It would be a massive pain to have a weight limit. Starvation? What's the point? It's ridiculously easy to get food. Also, exposure? I spawned in a snow biome in my new world. It's huge. I'd rather not die repeatedly when I create a new world.

By the way, the Minecraft world will now be known as "Arth".
I would only favor this if we knew how lanterns would be made.
I'm sure as hell not settling for a freaking glowstone, as if I didn't have reason to play on peaceful. (btw, I read that he was making a lantern with glowstone... *sigh*)
if it was more realistic to make, I would like it. Also, if he does, the moving light system is a must and that the torches better last more than a day, more like 10 days or something.

im sorry, but the only ignorance i found was in your reply. not once has anyone suggested changing your game, only ours. Notch has stated many times that he would like a survival slider, that would adjust the requirements to survive for different players. Why should I or Rafe not be allowed to stave off starvation or the elements? Or try to manage the amount of food and supplies to bring on an expedition without breaking a weight limit? Your saying these things should be denied to us, simply because you dont like it. Sounds pretty ignorant to me
I would prefer Notch not change anything about Torches, but rather implement Lanterns as a portable light source that requires Fuel such as Logs or Coal to function (see: Legend of Zelda).
And don't give me the "BLUH BLUH HE SAID IT WAS UNPOSSIBLE TO MAKE PORTIBBLE LIGHT!!!!!111" argument, someone who isn't even as experienced as Notch at coding created a mod that allowed portable torches.
Maybe the crafting formula for a Lantern could be...
I think they'll definitely be added eventually, but I hope they won't have to be powered all the time. By that I mean putting coal in it every 10 mins. I also hope a mod will come out that keeps torches going forever.

There's only one way to find out. We must tie him up and throw him in the lake. If he lives, he is a whitch. If he dies, he is human. MY LOGIC BEATS YOURS.
Carryable lights are possible. they just look really crappy imo (because of the blocky style, it would be better with better lighting)
And if Lanturns did give out more light then he would have to rewrite the entire lighting system. It only supports light levels up to 15.

-snip-
But nothing with ore or anything from the nether! THat would ruin the game.
Your torches are made out of coal.
Tbh iron would be better.

When the water mob is out people will figure out how to make a water mob trap by draining all the water from the sea and realising they're the same as BP.
Kinda be understandable if the recipe were to be this. Well, if it's incorrect, I apologize. I've been thinking too much of Amnesia's Lantern.
But hell, wouldn't it be nice if Minecraft's soon-to-release lantern be a lot like Amnesia's lantern? The need to refilling it with lamp oil every now and then?
Hm... That does make me think Minecraft needs oil.
FYI: charcoal is used for early in a save when you don't have access to coal yet and its very inefficient.
Charcoal and coal are the same thing. Cept charcoal is made from wood, that's the only difference. It was implemented it make it easier for new players who start a world and can't find coal.
I'd like to see lanterns, but I'm not so hot on the idea of torches burning out...
It'd be reasonable, I guess, if they lasted a decent length of time before going out, but still...
Having both torches and lanterns would be great though, extra content always = win, imo. I like the idea of crafting recipes that involve less iron, like this one that was presented:

Any more iron feels too expensive, and I think that a recipe like this should produce at least two lanterns as well.
The best use for them I think would be if they would give off more light than a torch, like if the light went twice the distance:
(Torch being a lantern in this example)
14,14,13,13,12,12,11,11,10,10,etc...

Steam? The only steam I see is emanating from that pile of crap slapped onto so many good games nowadays.
If your penis looks anything like a creeper I suggest you go see a doctor about it, something's definitely wrong!
Why do people keep suggesting that lanterns should require being refueled occasionally with oil? I thought the original idea was that torches would become temporary and lanterns would become the main permanent light source. It sort of counter-acts the original intention if the lantern needs something that would presumably be even harder to collect in order to maintain it.
