*Warning* yes asked before, yes glowstone is useless, yes notch will probably never add another use for it, yes you don't find it interesting, but that simply means go somewere else and don't troll/flame/flamebait here *warning*
Good day fellow minecraftians
I find myself still sitting with a certain problem that won't go away:
How to effectively mine Glowstone in the nether dimension without dying 5 times per deposit
I wanted to ask for some advice on this subject but before you do rush in with your helpful suggestions please read the following which describes my problem in detail and more importantly what I've already tried.
1-I want to do it on Hard mode, Peacefull mining ain't exactly hard now is it? I'm here because of the Ghast problem.
2-Bow and arrow -> range is to short, soon as they barely enter range they move to erratic to target properly resulting in about half a stack of arrows per ghast and they spawn just as fast as you can kill them, basicly
3-fishing rod and sword -> really? the range is incredibly tiny not to mention the ghast moves back almost instantly
4-building a wall of cobblestone/netherrack around it works but only so much, it's also stupidly timeconsuming and expensive since the average deposit needs 1 stack of floor under it 1 to 3 stacks of wall around it to protect from ghast fire. This is not counting the amount of ghast projectiles that damage the deposit or knock you off the ledge when 8 of them are ganging up on you
5- tunneling into the wall upto the ceiling and mining down -> everything works fine only that you can't look down to see were the heck that deposit was so you either mine blindly in a direction and hope you guessed the distances correctly or keep knocking out blocks replacing them with dirt or cobble so you can walk up and down and find your way to the deposit again resulting in ghastfire issues and general unpleasantness.
With these methods already tried I've ran out of ideas and am asking you fine folks for some more insight into the problem of Ghasts in combination with mining glowstone
I just hack it into my inventory. I tried mining the closest source once. It took like 3 stacks of cobblestone to reach it and I died once, also ghasts destroyed about half of it, so all I got out of it was about 10 glowstone dust.
I share your conundrum. Those ghasts make it damn near impossible to do anthing except RUN RUN OH JESUS RUN as fast as you can. What I do is try to find lightstone near mountains/stalagmites, scale to the top and mine it all. Anything i miss or the ghasts hit falls down and lands on the slope or bottom.
Bring a bunch of spare cobblestone and build up some sort of barrier around the glowstone. Dirt or other very common blocks might work well too, as so long as they hide you visually the ghasts shouldn't try to shoot you.
It looks cool as lanterns and such.
If you want it so bad, you can use peaceful mode for a few minutes to grab a vein.
Or you know, invedit.
To get it legit, you might just have to get lucky with where you find it and be quick on building cobble walls.
You guys didn't even read his post, did you.
Building cobblestone walls is time consuming and resource-wasting.
He wants to do it on hard, legit.
Gah, shoulda put a tl;dr in there for these sorta people.
I read it, I don't care. Unless he gets lucky and finds a deposit that's enclosed in bloodstone, he's going to have to suck it up and "degrade himself" to peaceful, or build up a defense. That, or mine it as fast as possible while running around avoiding ghasts. There really aren't a whole lot of choices here, and if he refuses to use the ones stated and the ones he listed, then he's probably just going to have to give up on it.
Well, I gave a perfectly decent sorta alternative. You know, finding naturally-sheltered slopes and mining from there?
NOt sure why you want to turn this into a pissing contest.
You could try the blitzkrieg. High risk, high reward, i suppose.
Put on armor, stack cobblestone up to the top, and punch it down. Because the ghasts have almost as amazing aiming as the skeletons, you will get hit at most a couple of times. Which would mean falling off. So you should also make the platform wide to catch you, or maybe put slowsand at the bottom to cushion your fall.

Actually, that's the best mental image ever. A dying, drowning man stuffing his face from a massive wall of cake, and carving out a monstrous underwater cake picture. I'd pay to watch that irl.

Make a sand scaffold.
If you don't know how to do this, read more after my next paragraph.
Make a bridge to walk across and start making a system. Create a platform under the vein. Mine it. If ghasts come for you, there's a mod somewhere that's called Shrinking Powder. I believe it's by Roundaround.
If you want to get it TOTALLY legit, then go up and make a scaffold until you can't jump anymore. Create a platform and create walls around it so ghasts can't see you. It'll take lots of material, but it'd worth it if you're heading for lightstone.
---HOW TO MAKE A SAND SCAFFOLD---
You know when you need to go up for a project or you need to get up high for a sec and come back down?
Alright, if you're going to be in the nether, then make armor. If you don't want to or cannot make armor, then find some way to reduce fall damage.
MATERIAL:
Sand
A torch
---BEGINNING---
Create something that looks like this:
Add more sand to the top of your sand column. Make stairs if you must. Place a sand block by putting it on the side of the standing block.
All you have to do now is pillar jump on the sand block above the torch. Make it as high as you want.
etc...
Once you are done, jump down (Fall damage reduction, remember) and remove the block above the torch. All the sand blocks will fall on the torch and you can easily collect them.

This thread is a perfect example of why we have threads discussing cheating methods. It is impossible to have a discussion about legitimate gameplay tactics without a bunch of idiots coming in and saying that the best way is to mess with the game settings or even modify the game files externally.
That being said, you might want to try venturing out a bit from your portal, placing cobblestone landmarks as you go, until you find a sufficiently low group of glowstone, taking no more than a few blocks to tower up to it. If you went far enough, there should be few ghasts spawned, giving you enough time to get it all, and even if a ghast shows up you can easily hide behind a small wall.
I personally use an elevated cobblestone walkway system which is just under the roof and almost completely sheltered from ghasts. Whenever I want more glowstone, I just make another path over to the closest outcrop, enclose it in a half-box of cobblestone, and collect it in safety. This method takes a lot of cobblestone but is pretty safe; the only real danger is that a fireball could hit behind you as you build, knocking you off the structure. It is also possible for the ghasts to take out the glowstone, but that can happen with any plan.
No matter what method you use, never hesitate to shoot at a ghast if you get the chance. It only takes 3 arrows, and if they are close enough you are not likely to miss more than once or twice. I wouldn't bother with a fishing rod, that trick has never worked for me.
I take at least 4 stacks of cobble with me when collecting Glowstone. If the deposit is far away, I spend the time to make an enclosed tunnel to the area. From there I tunnel into the Netherrack to get up to the deposit. Then I start with the cobble enclosure. Each deposit is unique. The plan is always hide behind cobble to avoid the blasts. Sometimes it is easy to attach the cobble blocks to the Netherrack. For those times it is not, it becomes a game of hide and seek while I try to build the floor and then at least a 2 high wall.
If it's just 1 ghast firing at me, then I do my best to hit the fireballs back to the ghast. 2 or more I might try to lure them away and kill them. Regardless of how I do it, I am lucky to get all of the Glowstone without some being lost to at least 1 blast.
But yeah, mining Glowstone is never boring, I'll say that much. lol
what about deflecting ghast-bolts (what are they called, anyways?) into the lightstone? let them do the work for you.
i'm just brainstorming, because this might actually work.
here's a diagram of how it would work (the .s are for spacing)

GLASS!

Elaborate? Glass can be broken by Ghast fire and is rather difficult to get a good supply of.

deflect the ghast-bolts into the lightstone, then collect the dust.
1. Make a portal above sea level
2. find glowstone near cliff
3. build staircase into clifface
4. ?????
5. Profit
Yeah, I figure I'll stop collecting it when the room can't hold any more chests.
