-Players choose pre-determined packages of items to start in multi-player games
I don't know exactly how multi-player is going to work. (I'm excited though!) I assume there will be a maximum allowed in given servers. (say 100 for sake of example) I join in and I am 90th. This is my 10th server I've joined perhaps, or maybe the server admin reset the world, but either way I'm starting from scratch. Should I have to start with my bare hands? I think we should have access to 'starter kits' to ease what we've all done a zillion times while playing MineCraft already. That is, building up from scratch. If we can choose a starter kit to help us get to our goal we could be an influential part of the world quicker. Here may be some potential starter kits:
Aggressive kits: Soldier: Iron armor, iron sword, 2 bread, 1 cooked pork Ranger: Leather armor, bow, 30 arrows, 4 torches, 2 bread Raider: Leather armor, stone axe, flint+iron fire thingy, 4 torches, 2 bread Trickster: 10 red dust, 2 TNT, Flint+iron fire thingy, 2 bread
Could be worth something. Everyone lives in stone castles and you enter with your bare hands? Not super fun. Booster kit (along those lines) may be welcomed.
I like the idea, sort of. But what you're suggesting sounds a bit over-powered. It would make more sense to me if everyone started with some basic stuff. Maybe just a stone pickaxe, a loaf of bread, and a handful of torches. Not over-powered and still a good way to start. :biggrin.gif:
However, I doubt anyone with common sense and less-than-l33t skills is going to jump into a large server where it is more than likely that everyone is living in castles.

32 person servers would probably be the maximum. You aren't going to spawn in their dungeon or anything... If you are insanely far behind, couldn't you "Befriend" one of those men living in castles? Surely, not everyone will be camping your spawn with full diamond and an inventory of TNT.
I also had this insane idea of "laying low". It is where you don't try and attack castles right when you spawn, you kind of make a small shelter and work up from there.
Anyway, there will be servers which pvp and servers which are solely co-op. Co-op servers, you could find hospitable people and work together to achieve goals, it isn't everyone Vs. yourself.

There is no greater crime against humanity than the intentional preservation of the weak and incompetent.
Why the heck wouldn't I gather this stuff myself? You're absolutely ruining the idea of minecraft with this suggestion. You're supposed to build from nothing to something to lots of things, not, here's lots of things.
The worst part is the incredile imbalance you offer. Looks like builders and Soldiers kick ass and everything else sucks.
But that's not even the least of the problems. The huge one is you're suggesting we ruin minecraft.
I suppose it's a bit much. If the community prefers to start empty handed than so be it. Could be an option none the less so you could join servers with it without it.
Start from nothing? Just go to the nearest city and beg for leftover dirt, flint, stone, gravel, stone tools, wool, string and maybe near broken iron stuff.
Even better, align yourself with said nation. Get some good gear, start helping out, prosper.

How about punch down a tree. Make a hut, workbench, tools and start mining. Get gear and **** over the nearest weaker settlement. Profit.
I like you too.
These people....These people know what SMP deserves to be.....

agreed. getting a whole bunch of items at the start pretty much wrecks the point of it all. and besides that, the stuff listed in the OP are HORRIBLY unbalanced.

"He's trolling the game mechanic itself. And succeeding."
This would ultimately be up to the server host, by design I assume survival means you start with nothing, you also re-spawn with nothing.

Soldier: Iron armor, iron sword, 2 bread, 1 cooked pork
Iron is very decent, something you come by after a few hours of playing...
It would be EVEN rarer on a multi-player server...
Maybe wooden sword, no armour.
Again, arrows are pretty hard to come by, especially 30.
You won't have access to torches until you've done a fair bit of mining.
Leather armour is not so hard to come by, but a full set takes about 10 minutes of cow hunting.

Raider: Leather armor, stone axe, flint+iron fire thingy, 4 torches, 2 bread
Flint+Steel = minge potential, and pretty decent.
Again with the stone.

Trickster: 10 red dust, 2 TNT, Flint+iron fire thingy, 2 bread
In short, 90% of those fit outs are either heavily unbalanced or will destroy the game. It's probably best you start and re-spawn with your bare hands.
If you are getting inspiration from similar RP style games, I see what you are getting at, and it make sense, but that's too many options.
You should start with a small sum of currency, and obviously re-spawning will not make you drop this.
I don't think the idea is bad, but the specifics need work, maybe have 100 points to "buy" items at the beginning of the game, and the most you'd be able to get is 1 iron tool or maybe 10-15 of a simple block and 5-10 of a basic crafted block. Something like that?
Classes MUST NOT ENTER MINECRAFT.
It would completely **** up the game.
Exactly.
However I hope currency and trading makes its way into SMP.
I hope currency doesnt enter the game, but trading does.
That way we can have a neat bartering system. :smile.gif:
such as trading 128 glass for 64 iron. or whatever the two people trading agree is fair.

Sorry if I post in your thread once and never again, I forget who I have and haven't scrutinised.

Passive kits:
Crafter: Crafting table, 50 wood, 20 stone, 10 iron, 2 chests, 2 bread
Blacksmith: Oven, 10 wood, 25 stone, 20 iron, 10 coal, 2 chests, 2 bread
Farmer: 30 seeds, 12 wheat, 5 saplings, 50 dirt, 2 wooden hoes, 2 wooden shovels, 1 bucket, 1 chest, 2 bread
Trader: 20 gold, 10 feathers, 10 string, 2 bread
Miner: 2 stone pick axes, 2 iron shovels, 20 torches, 1 TNT, 1 chest, 3 bread
Explorer: Leather armor, 2 boats, 10 wood, 8 torches, 5 bread
Builder: 100 wood, 100 stone, 12 wooden steps, 12 stone steps, 4 wooden doors, 12 glass, 12 ladders, 1 wooden shovel, 1 wooden axe, 1 wooden pickaxe, 4 torches, 3 bread
Perhaps something along those lines. Thoughts?
No. Start out with nothing, build your empire from the ground up.
Edit: You added more.
Could be worth something. Everyone lives in stone castles and you enter with your bare hands? Not super fun. Booster kit (along those lines) may be welcomed.
Booster kit? Stuff is already retarded easy. I can get a diamond sword in the first 30 minutes of play.
Look at it this way; Everyone else starts with the same things as you.
However, I doubt anyone with common sense and less-than-l33t skills is going to jump into a large server where it is more than likely that everyone is living in castles.

Yeah... I didn't think of all that... Sorry, I shouldn't post when I'm tired. :tongue.gif:

Your idea is poison.

A simple suggestion on geology here.

This ones obvious, who on earth starts with TNT.
What's the point of this, you spawn and already you can make full iron set of tools?
What's the blacksmith supposed to do with these, sell them?
Way too much stuff, wouldn't be harmful though...
Really... Reaaaaally.
Too much.
What's the wood for, making more boats?
Seriously.
