I was reading some Wikipedia pages when I came across this: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cave_of_the_Crystals
It is amazing how big those quartz are, I thought. Then I noticed how the cave resembled the Nether a bit, and that is when I thought of this idea.
What the idea is:
Huge icicle-looking quartz towers will be in the lava oceans of the nether. The towers will be slanted, as if they're sinking. The will be inhabited by pigmen here too. The quartz towers would be made out of quartz blocks, not quartz ore.
That is my suggestion. If you like it, upvote it, and be sure to comment!

This would be cool, and it wouldn't even be that unbalanced, because you can't use fortune on them, and you can't break down quartz blocks into individual crystals, so you'd still need the ore to get the crystals for redstone contraptions. Support.

Yes.
Just a thought: Could it be a new type of quartz, one that looks more rough/jagged, and have it only break into nether ore (unless you used Silk Touch)?

Pointing out fallacies to undermine an argument is also a fallacy...
It should be a new block called "Quartz Crystal", which drops the same as Quartz Ore, but can be silked touch for a pretty translucent decoration block. It would look like white stained glass without the diagonal lines.

Why Minecraft mobs should NEVER have multiple attacks:
- No other PC mobs do. - Mob behaviour is intended to be simple.
Why you should NOT name new "special ability" weapons as "XXX Swords":
- No other swords have special abilities. - Make a new kind of weapon.
I like this idea, but when I picture it in my head, it looks a little out of place. How about a glass variant of the quartz block?
This will allow for the red hue of the nether to come through to decrease the white contrast, plus it will create a new block, plus the player can use it in the over world and have it suit their environment.

They would be in lava and really hard to get to, so...

Totally not true:
Hardest part is this (still quite easy):
Find Nether Fortress.
Find Blaze Spawner.
Kill a few Blazes to get 2 Blaze Rods.
Make sure you have 1 Slimeball.
Craft 1 Magma Cream + Craft Brewing Stand.
Brew 3 Extended Potions of Fire Resistance.
Then go farm those Blazes again using Potions of Fire Resisance - Lots of easy Blaze Rods!
Once you have those Potions of Fire Resistance, just bring some cobblestone so that going mining into the middle of a lava lake becomes a breeze. Swim to crystal, swim down, pillar up using cobble, harvest crystal.
This sounds pretty cool. I do agree that it should be a new version of Quartz that is partially transparent. Also, how many blocks wide would they be? Wide enough that I could hollow out the center and live in it or tunnel down to the base of it?

Easy as the proverbial pie.
Yes, but you still need to go through blazes and the other mobs in the Nether. They're quite easy though.

I actually don't know that question o.o
When I get to play minecraft again I will try to make the giant quartz :).
It definitely sounds interesting. I might go into a world on Creative and try some shapes and sizes of my own. If they are at least 3x3 at lava level you could make an awesome house out of them.

Maybe ;).
I like that idea! I just want to see what would be better for the crystals...but I think we have a winner :D. I'll add that to the suggestion later.
