1. You should equip a glider simply by placing it into the body armor slot in the survival inventory.
2. No support.
I thought about that, but I didn't want it to take away from armor protection, because while you are on the ground with it you move slower. It is of course open for discussion. Other than that, do you have another reason you don't support?
Everyone else, what do you think of equipping it in the chest slot? You lose armor while flying but the time to equip it would be about the same.

Sorry for not specifying. I just think flight, no matter what form, would be far too overpowered. But that's just me, and if everyone else thinks otherwise, I wouldn't throw a fit or anything if this was implemented.
I rather like this idea as much as the giffan one someone else mentioned. It is well fleshed out and sensible. I can see myself though changing the flight controls in the options to be up and down be literal. If I was playing with a joystick I would keep the default.
As far as the armor slot comment; no. To me that would be too much and be in a way underpowered... After all one would at least want a chance to dive off that cliff before someone swipes at you, even if it is a slow walk off the edge. Makes more sense in the hotbar for somewhat quick access, as that is how you "Use" items of any kind usually. Putting it in an armor slot would be like saying i don't have to use the item in order to get away. I know I just contradicted what I said in the first sentence with that, but I hope you get what I mean at least.
After all it seems it should not be a carefree thing to have, since maintenance is involved; meaning the choice to "use" it. that is what I think.

In comparison with the horse. The only advantage it has is getting from point a to b, when you already are high above ground/sea level. For transportation and usage, the horse beats it in all other areas.
With minecarts, powered rails, pistons. I'd say it indeed fits the theme. They invented that and they can and have thought of inventing this, now it's time they do it.
Basically this is an addition not any more harmful than the addition of rabbits, obviously less cute but perhaps a bit more useful.
100% support from me, quite well thought out, I have been using the Open Blocks glider and it is a cool way to fly in Minecraft.
Creative flight is boring and cheaty in survival, Jetpacks are OK, but don't fit a non Tech world.
I do have a couple of preferences, just for practicality in a wider variety of map types and game types:
I like that the glider can be broken if it is crashed too often or struck by arrows;
Fire arrows should set it on fire and damage it for several ticks of damage;
I think that shooting from the glider should be possible (with limited aim angles to suit glider) making aerial combat possible;
Dropping primed TNT like a bomb should also be possible, because who doesn't like TNT?
I like the Open Blocks way of working from hot bar is better than the idea of using the chest slot, so that you have to have it selected to work, open your inventory or move off it and fall! (to work with 2 and 3 above, left mouse drops TNT from hot bar, right mouse fires bow from hot bar)
While held in the hand, allows the player to run-jump-glide to cover ground faster.
I am not sold on thermals, not in Minecraft anyway.
Perhaps a compromise (admittedly unrealistic) would be to have space bar (jump) gain altitude in exchange for an increase in the rate of hunger while it is used, no hunger while just gliding. As you can't eat while flying, it puts a finite limit on flight time.
Great idea which I think adds a fun way to fly, I would love it.
EDIT: Proper use for saddles, because horses...
1. Yeah I think making it break was the right choice.
2. As I said in the OP, anything that damages the player damages the glider, other than certain magic effects or things that shouldn't be possible while gliding anyways. Being on fire damages the glider each time it hurts you.
3. I thought about that and the idea does still kind of appeal to me, but I also like the idea of it being simply potion bombing. Plus it doesn't make much sense as you can't fly and shoot a bow at the same time. We will see.
4. Absolutely not. It would be a maybe if TnT could be lit on their own or didn't stack to 64. Potions make sense as they don't need another item like a Flint and Steel, and don't stack. It doesn't matter what kind of delay you put on TnT, being able to drop potentially 8 stacks of them is OP.
5. You do equip it from the hotbar, but no to throwing TnT and maybe to the bow, as said above.
6. That doesn't really make sense, as you need to get caught in air to push you up to glide, so that would cover ground slower. Plus I prefer the idea of needing to plan out uses of the glider rather than making it a "twitch reaction" item. The movement in Titanfall is a heck of a lot of fun, but something I love about Minecraft is how much thinking and planning goes into it.
You plan a structure before you build. You need to plan your rail route out to keep it safe and make so it works. You plan your redstone device. I much prefer the idea of planning where you want to go with the Glider before taking off, rather than making it something you can do on a whim from anywhere.
I rather like the thermals, and I prefer it because it is more realistic, it fits more into the planning aspect of things I mentioned above (especially if laying out a gliding route), and doesn't tie into hunger.

An interesting idea, but I don't know if I agree with it. I like hang gliding mechanics and prefer that flight be more limited than just how much durability you have, especially since an Unbreaking 3 Elytra could fly for 10+ minutes. But if enough people like the idea it can be added.
Added another improvement, a video option to automatically put you in 3rd person when flying.

As far as improvements to the functions of the Elytra... I pretty much agree completely. The only sticking point is the heavier flight controls, I'm not sure why that would be necessary. But everything else, the ability to fold the wings, the aiming mode, the 3rd person option, even crash damage - all sounds excellent.
As for thermals... I think they need to be a bit more powerful. The Elytra is surprisingly under powered as it is, giving us a way to allow for long flights along pre-planned paths makes sense. I would say that instead of a set effective range for thermals, it should be based on the area of the patch of lava/fire. A lava lake (nether) would max out at something like 48 blocks. While a single block would only work up to say 4. Lava flow would be proportionally less effective (if it works at all). Fire would have half the effectiveness of lava.
Balance against this though, I think the effect should be fairly light. You would need a large body of lava to really get much lift out of it. I would think of course, that the distance from the heat source would also be a factor.
Remember, building a river of lava isn't easy - lava is way more difficult to work with than water, so this could require a large amount of construction.

I suggest placing a note and link in the OP to page 3, since that is where the topic change occurs.
As for powered flight... yes and no. I think flapping could work - but it should eat a whole lot of your food up like sprinting... but more so.

The heavier controls are more of a hope than anything else, and that is my personal preference only so I expect people will disagree with it. In my opinion a lot of Minecraft's movement lacks weight and feels floaty to me.
I thought about doing thermals based on the area you were flying over and it seemed like it would take too much work to calculate if you make it too massive. Checking for all of a specific block in a certain area becomes increasingly harder the larger the area gets, which is why Slime Blocks are so limited (although that is also because the game needs to detect and move them). We could compromise by it detecting other blocks within a certain distance (a 5 block radius around the player would detect an area that is 121 square meters. The game would look at the Thermal block the player is in and increase the boost that they get by the standard amount plus 1% for each Thermal block the player would be effected by. So going across a large lava lake would give you the standard amount plus a 120% boost to elevation while in the thermal.
Plus keep in mind that in the OP if flying level the thermal will elevate you high enough to escape it in 4.5 seconds. However, for a large lava lake that is a constant thermal, you could angle the Elytra downwards, which would still give you a speed boost but you wouldn't descend as fast as you would normally because your downward angle is being "fought" by the upwards force of the Thermal. So if you angle your nose down in a thermal you could get a massive speed boost, then angle your nose up at the end of it and you would be able to fly exceptionally far.
The distance from the lava and stuff is intriguing, I'll work on some calculations. I thought about just making it a height check but making actual "thermal" air blocks above Lava similar to how a light source works might be easier to calculate a lot of this stuff with.

Edit: Okay so with the latest snapshot a type of glider was added called the Elytra. I went and played with them on an Amplified world (go do this now. Make a new Amplified Creative world on the latest snapshot, get one, and try it. It is AWESOME), and they seem to be almost entirely how I envisioned them. So everyhing before page 3 might not be relevant anymore.
They aren't craftable, but they are repairable. They can be enchanted with Unbreaking. You can use Splash Potions or a Bow on them (this seems to be bugged right now, The arrows only work properly if you are just about in a stall, otherwise they seem to just fall). They have more durability than I envisioned, but it lowers while flying and you can't see the durability while flying. Unlike this thread they are unbreakable, but once it gets to 1 durability they stop working until they are repaired.
So I am changing this thread from suggesting a Hang Glider to suggesting improvements to the inclusion of Thermals, as well as some general Elytra changes. The original suggestion will be removed and saved on my PC (because the editor isn't letting me put it in Spoiler tags).
Thermals (Using Lava and Fire to gain height)
Just like in real life, you can extend your flight by hitting a thermal. A thermal is rising hot air, which forces your glider upwards. There are two places to find Thermals in Minecraft. Fire produces a thermal of 8 blocks, and Lava produces a thermal of 16 blocks
A thermal will lift you up to the top of the thermal (or where you exit it by not being above Lava or Fire anymore), and then an additional 50% bonus at a speed of 4 m/s. Meaning if you fly into a Lava thermal 4 blocks above the Lava, it will lift you to the top of the thermal (12 Blocks), then an extra 50% of the blocks you rose (6 Blocks). So in total in that situation, you would rise 18 blocks.
There are some drawbacks to Thermals, so don't think you can just lay down some Lava and fly around forever. Every time you enter a Thermal your Elytra takes 1 additional damage for every 2 seconds you are in the Thermal. Seeing how you rise fairly quick in a Thermal, the worst a flat Thermal can do is about 3-4 damage. Also, if a thermal lifts you up so high you hit the ceiling, you bounce off normally. But you were right above Lava or Fire, so you are probably going to land in it. So while you can use Thermals to extend your flying time, they are dangerous, and you can't use them forever.
It's an interesting idea, but I really don't see why anyone would use it while you can get height back by pulling out of a dive. Especially when it does damage to an item with already unreasonably low durability.
General Elytra Improvements
Crashing: Right now the only way you crash is if you nose-dive and land on the ground. From any decent height that can easily kill a player, and that is good. But I think you should be able to crash into walls or ceilings as well. At a low speed I'd say it should just interrupt gliding and cause you to need to re-enter the gliding state. At high speeds it should cause damage equal to whatever damage you would get from nose diving at the same speed. In short, you should receive fall damage for colliding with any side of a block at high speed, not just from landing on them.
Gameplay > realism. There have been plenty of instances where I flew under something and slammed into it, even though it looked like I was going to make it. Running into blocks already stops your flight, I don't really think I'd like it if it did damage.
Emergency Break: A way to immediately stop flight by retracting the Elytra's wings. This would be done by pressing the Sneak key, and it would be incredibly useful. The first reason it would be useful is because it gives you the ability to jump down large distances without deploying your wings or having to take them off. Just jump and hold your Sneak key and they won't deploy, or you can press it while gliding to stop using the wings immediately.
If you press Sneak while flying, you will continue in your horizontal direction for a little bit depending on your speed, and eventually the horizontal momentum becomes downward momentum (if you press Sneak while nose-diving you are gonna have a bad time). You could use that to save durability when you are getting ready to land somewhere that is safe (like if you are only a few blocks above ground, or are any number of blocks above water). You can also use it in some really cool trick ways like flying straight, then disengaging the wings to fly straight down, then releasing the Sneak key to engage the wings once more to save yourself from dying. I can picture the challenge maps now.
Support, more controls would be fantastic.
Improved Aiming System: First off, all bugs for throwing Potions or shooting a Bow need to get fixed. That isn't what this is about. What I would like is to be able to hold the Sprint key to maintain your current gliding direction, giving you independent mouse movement while the key is held. Momentum would still change based on how you were flying, so if you were pointed up you lose speed or if you were pointed down you gain speed. This would allow players to slow down and fly level, then hold the Sprint key and look around freely to use a Bow or other item. Releasing the Sprint key would snap your view back to where it should be for normal flight and you can continue to fly normally.
This would make aerial combat much more manageable, as well as bombing runs using Splash Potions or dropping supplies to people on the ground.
Support. Again, more control would be fantastic and this would add a lot to aerial combat.
"Heavier" Flight Controls: Basically I would like a bit more heft when flying. Right now you can pull out of a dive from any height at the last second with absolutely no problem. And you can fix a stall with no problems at all. I think it should be a bit harder to pull out of a dive at high speeds, or to fix a stall by pointing your nose down. Right now it seems too fast and too easy.
Eh, I think part of the satisfaction of flying with the Elytra is being able to go at ultrahigh speeds and still maintain control, which allows you to do cool aerial maneuvers and stuff. However, maybe if you're wearing heavier armor I can see this making sense. It would also add another layer of balance to Elytra for PVP; you can fly really fast, but you have to sacrifice armor? I dunno, I'm rambling at this point.
Dyeing Elytra: Because of course you should be able to do it. It is made from Leather, so it should have the same dyeing mechanics as Leather gear. They initially showed off a neat red/white design, but we only have these grey-blue ones. To my knowledge it can't be dyed
Better yet, change the wing design to look more like a Banner hanging from the player's back like a Cape, and let you apply a Banner to it like you can to a shield. When you just have it on your back it looks like a Banner hanging, but then when you fly it splits into 2 wings.
As amazing as this would be...I doubt it's going to happen, for the simple reason that it would make capes redundant. I'd love to have my own, personalized style of wings, but unfortunately we'll all probably have to stick with the drab old grey version. Maybe they could have various style of Elytra that you can find on Ender Ships; maybe a pair that look like dragon wings, or one of those DaVinci-style flying machines. That would be cool.
Automatic 3rd Person Flight: Personally, I play Minecraft in 1st person (because 3rd person sucks for fighting or well... doing anything). But after checking out the flight mechanics, I found I really enjoy flying in 3rd person. A video option to automatically change you to 3rd person when gliding would be nice. If the Improved Aiming System I suggested got implemented, holding Sprint to aim would put you back into 1st person to aim and return you to 3rd person when Sprint is released.
This option would be off by default, but I would like the option to be able to switch into 3rd person while flying automatically so I don't have to press F5 every flight and then press it 2 more times when I land. Plus it seems like it should be there anyways, considering you can't see the indicator that you are stalling (player flailing arms), unless you are in 3rd person.
It's an interesting idea, but I really don't see why anyone would use it while you can get height back by pulling out of a dive. Especially when it does damage to an item with already unreasonably low durability.

So long as it's toggleable, I don't see why not.
Partial Support.
I'll try and respond in order, I hate being on my laptop because I lack a second monitor and scrolling up and down to read what I am responding to is a pain.
You can get some height back by pulling out of a dive. You can't get all of it, or at least you aren't supposed to because Mojang indicated it was not supposed to be infinitely sustainable. To my knowledge the only way you can fly until the durability runs out now is by exploiting a bug that lets you shoot yourself with a bow to raise your elevation without stopping your glide. This would allow players true, intended sustainable flight, allowing you to fly until your wings stop working without landing.
Also the durability loss is actually a remnant of the old glider I had suggested, which did not lose durability when flying. I'll remove the durability loss in a thermal.
I wasn't really going for a realism thing there, it was more along the lines of it makes players fly a bit more carefully and not slam into walls at top speed like lunatics. You would have to be moving at incredibly fast speeds to actually cause the crash (like if you were in a straight nose dive and then pulled up and hit a wall or ceiling within 1-2 seconds). Otherwise it would work the same as it does now.
Thanks for the support on both of the control additions.
As I said to the other person above, this is more a personal preference and I would be okay if it never happened. I'm a big fan of flying games that make it hard to pull out of dives or stalls, and this is also partially remnants of my old suggestion. If other people dislike it I will remove it.
I could see the Leather dyeing system being done, but I think you are right about them never doing the banner system (although the Minecraft capes could give special designs that are impossible to get with the banner system).
Yeah definitely just an option that is off by default. Another personal preference thing.

I would think it would be more like light levels. Where air blocks around lava/fire would have a heat level, the calculation for this would happen when blocks are placed in the world - so once the lava is in placed, it's a stored value.
I'm glad that makes the idea more appealing.

It's an interesting idea, but I really don't see why anyone would use it while you can get height back by pulling out of a dive. Especially when it does damage to an item with already unreasonably low durability.
Gameplay > realism. There have been plenty of instances where I flew under something and slammed into it, even though it looked like I was going to make it. Running into blocks already stops your flight, I don't really think I'd like it if it did damage.
Support, more controls would be fantastic.
Support. Again, more control would be fantastic and this would add a lot to aerial combat.
So long as it's toggleable, I don't see why not.
Partial Support.

I'll try and respond in order, I hate being on my laptop because I lack a second monitor and scrolling up and down to read what I am responding to is a pain.

I would think it would be more like light levels. Where air blocks around lava/fire would have a heat level, the calculation for this would happen when blocks are placed in the world - so once the lava is in placed, it's a stored value.
