I believe that oil should be introduced to minecraft soon.
Oil is the gateway fluid.
Oil can be used as
*mechanical lubricant
*fuel
*herbicide
*crafting material
*fuel for non furnace fires [set a fuel spring on fire, clear a hillside of grass and trees]
*future alchemy or whatever if implemented
*Wax, candle crafting.
Fuel could be carried in buckets like water or lava, or in sealed glass containers as fuel for furnaces
Oil could also fuel Steam engines, gasoline engines, cart pusher thingies,
Oil could have a much higher current strength than watr so that it simulated slipping.
ACQUIRING OIL:
Oil would be found 5-6 blocks under the ocean in oil pockets of 20-30 spring blocks, would have reverse sand properties [floats to top of water when a pool is reached unless an underwater structure is there to stop it form flowing up. in which case it behaves like upside down water, where stopped springs release streams of oil that go to the surface, where the non spring oil can be collected in glass bottles.
EDIT: Just to clarify, oil will flow above water, but cannot be harvested except for pools of oil on the water's surface or a surface oil block, making a waterfall of oil very localized and pointless except looking awesome, or making a slippery slide.
EDIT2: Maybe you could make Fire-waterfalls with this,
EDIT3: Found RightLegRed had a suggestion for oil in his game improvement thread, below is his suggestion:
Oil
Oil would act like Lava, flow slowly. If it came into contact with water (*cough* BP) it would turn the water into diluted water. So it would be black-ish water. The blackish water can be fixed by getting the contaminated water and pouring more water onto it. Oil would only spread onto 3-4 water pieces. Contaminated water wouldn't spread onto other pieces of water unless the water was flowing. Oil would be extremely rare and it would be used for furnaces (offering more burn time than coal & wood), "Oilfalls" and it would be extremely flammable. Its uses would be:
* Oilfalls (Like water falls, but oil instead)
* Longer burning times in furnaces
* Fire Lines (Make a line of Oil and set fire to it)
* Dark Blue Waters (To make waters seem deeper than they are)
But yeah, it seems like it might be a decent enough idea.
at least in minecraft a lone diver could correct an "oil spill" by simply bringing in a few buckets, making deep water drilling much less dangerous. a containment plan is already in place.

You stole this idea from my thread, created an hour before yours. Although you offer different reasons and ideas; the timing of your thread is too close to be coincidental.[/quote]
honestly i just saw nothc announcing coral on his blog and thought about oil. i will look again and if you did, deeply sorry, but had not seen another oil thread before

I want oil. However, I think that we need a different type of fluid that has a specific volume before it would work well.
With what you propose, you find one pocket of oil, and you are set, since it provides an unlimited supply. I would prefer large deposits of a finite size, and the best method of harvesting it all is to sink a pipe in it and pump it to the surface(like with real oil).

thought about this, way my oil works oil would spread from an poil spring but could not be colected except form oil springs, making flowing oil only useful for physical reaction, not an infinite fuel source for furnaces.
@rightleg, found your thread will add your oil section in quotes

not to put your thread down or anything, but it is very rare for anyone to have an idea that hasn't been posted and discussed before, around here.
Also, your thread is a multi-purpose thread. it's difficult to discuss any one item there. even if the original poster DID take your idea and re-post it for discussion, I'd think this was a completely legitimate thing to do, because it allows there to be an organized, focused discussion about your oil idea in a place where it won't interrupt other discussions about your other ideas.
That said, I don't really see the point of oil in the game. It'd be somewhat interesting, but aside from lanterns, it doesn't have much use without pushing the technology limit too much.
Maybe lanterns is enough to justify it. I don't know.
I also agree with mystify's point that oil shouldn't have 'springs', but be volumized instead.
Fossil fuels seem a little out of place in the minecraft world but the alternative is killing gentle beasts of the sea for their blubber... Still some form of oil would be a great addition and can be used for lamps, lanterns, candles, flaming arrows, alchemy and possibly another food source.
Even if it had 0 crafting uses, I would still like it for its properties as a flammable liquid. And there are plenty of crafting uses for it, many of which have been mentioned.
Yes. But only so I can be an evil oil and gunpowder company. Mining with the natural caves to look for resources is boring. Instead, you get a lot of TNT and just set it all off on a random spot on the ground.
I love the idea of oil! I would hope that the pipes would be round and not blocky. This is how I see the idea working-
Find oil source, craft oil pump, craft pipes and connect them to the pump, make sure the pipe touches the oil, craft barrels, click right on the pump while holding the barrel, profit!

Super TNT
Furnace Fuel
Vehicle Fuel
New light Source Fuel

this is why we need oil

dont think we will have internal combustion minecarts any time soon.
