That...is absolutely brilliant. I can definitely see that being useful. Not just for SMP, either. In either game mode, you might want to use this to take a book of important notes you've made with you when exploring (or any other book you like to have on hand), but keep a "master" copy safe in your base in case you die, so that the book isn't lost forever.
How's this recipe? Loosely based off of an actual book press.
This is would be very handy, especially if they got legitimate libraries going. Something that came up on this thread: http://www.minecraft...-them-yourself/
The way I figure, it would not need a power source, simply the master book, ink, and the blank book. Unfortunately this would be unreasonable to use as a handout sheet given the crafting requirements involved, but for a player to make his own book shop would be very interesting.
Besides that it seems worthwhile to allow finished books and unfinished books to be copied respectively. Allowing players to make backups of their journal without having to finish it as well as keeping finished books from becoming unfinished and being editable again.
I like this idea a lot, as I've desperately wanted to be able to duplicate maps (other than map_0) for a long time. However, after reading Eraed's thread on village libraries, I think there's actually a better solution for publishing, although it's not actually incompatible with this printer block. After all, you may want to be able to give every member of your clan a copy of a secret book of plans, and not want it to be published generally. (On the other hand, maybe that SHOULD require them to be written out by hand?)

And why would we need a block to be able to do this? You can already copy books by hand by writing them in notepad first, so why not just make it so when you craft a written book with a book and quill a copy is output and the original stays in the grid?

In the new new update, you can dupe maps. So if you are given an empty book and quill, right clicking will let you use it, and turn it into your own book. If you put the empty version and the typed version in a crafting table, it should just copy them. dont make it overtechnical
That would be amazing! I'm making an adventure mode world at the moment and I was thinking that I could have chests filled with books containing stories and directions. Keep pestering Jeb!
I support, and I think the standard crafting grid would be enough. No need for an extra "printing press" block.
Here's how to do it:
The book on the left of the grid is the original written book.
When you take the copy from the output, the original book will be automatically returned to your inventory, like buckets when you make a cake. Although it would be nice to have identical books always stack (up to 64), it's not essential.
I can see that some people may want to keep control of their work and not allow others to make more copies easily. I expect that could be done by making the copies a new item and then only allowing the book to be duplicated if it wasn't a copy.
If players wanted to hand on a "copyable" copy of the book, alter the crafting recipe to require 2 ink sacs instead of 1. If you use 1 ink sac, you get a "copy" which can't be used to craft another copy. If you use 2 ink sacs, you get a duplicate "master" which can be used to make more copies.

No, no, no! That's just silly. They mean the actual map item. You stick in a filled-in map, make copies, and don't have to worry about losing your old map when a creeper comes up to ask, "What'ssss that your sssscribling on, there?"
You can already copy maps:

Cloning
The output will have the same name and the same map center as the input map. Cloned maps are stackable.
Even already zoomed out maps can be cloned and keep their zoom level and original center, the already explored and mapped parts of the world are not copied.
You will get as many cloned maps as many empty maps you have used in crafting (up to 9 identical maps).
There might be a way to allow maps to support more colours and texpack customizations.
All you need to do is place an empty map next to a filled in map, and viola! Two of the same map.
Couldn't we just place a book and quill in with an already finished book? And hey, there's always Ctrl+C. I'm sorry, but adding a whole new block to do something that might be done without a block seems silly and unecassary.
If you want to mass produce books at a high rate, that's another story (See what I did there?). For instance, in a situation where you wrote a book while on a server, and want to sell it to people, then this block would have significantly more of a use.

I'd say put a quill in there.
