I think you should put the two leather on the bottom instead of the top
Why...why did you necropost a thread that is almost a year old? If a thread is dead, than leave it dead. If you don't listen to that advice, then things like Frankenstein's Monster happen.
Leather's only good for making books (leather armour? please : p), so this will give them something ells to be good for.
Also it's not OP, this will add enjoyment to players wanting to ride horses, and there's no reason why they should stay loot.
Sorry if this irks people who are already irked about this thread being revived, but it royally ticks me off that we can't craft saddles. I don't care what Dinnerbone has said. I don't care what anyone else has said. The idea that saddle aren't crafteable is from when their only use was for riding pigs. But then they went to all this trouble and fanfare to introduce a very sophisticated mob by MC standards and you can't really do anything with them until you chance upon a saddle (or, like I do, cheat and go into creative mode and fill up a chest of saddles). And now with the introduction of horse armor, it seems I more readily find the armor in chests than saddles. And what good is horse armor if I can't find a saddle??? In one survival world, I found 3 sets of horse armor yet still haven't found a saddle (hence why I cheated).
I don't mind making crafting saddles costly--my idea is for them to require 8 leather and 1 iron ingot (which makes sense to me, as a former equestrian, since saddles are actually made of a ton of leather held together with metal fixures). If you want to get even more realistic, then seven leather, 1 ingot and 1 wool (for padding).
Either way, keeping saddles as occasional loot is a bad idea that makes the game less enjoyable for those of us who really want to do a lot with horses and donkeys.
Ah, memories. This was one of my first posts, and it has now been revived for this update. Brings a tear to my eye.
Original post:
We all agree there should be a way to craft a saddle. But the recipie is so obvious that someone's probably thought of it before.

What do you think?
What do I think? I'm not sure what I think of this idea anymore. They did say that they wouldn't add a recipe (I learned how to spell recipe) for saddles, but when pigs fly comes after cow tipper in achievements. For everyone who says this would be too OP, you still need to find a horse, and we have no idea how commonly they'll spawn in the final game. Frankly, if people say they have 10 of them clogging up their chests from dungeons, it can hardly be called OP to be able to mass produce them. So bump this if you must, but I will be withdrawing further input. Thank you, goodnight.

Formerly known as ORabbit around these parts.
INCORRECT! A saddle now is crafted like this:
