Ok im not entirely sure how youd go about doing this, but i feel it needs consideration.
The fact that you can go through a map in minecraft and eventually exhaust all available resources seems to be an issue, at least in my mind. Sure it might take a long time, but its still within the realm of possibility.
I submit that Notch should make it so veins respawn or regenerate in some way.
Maybe make them permanent fixtures where you cant remove them by mining but you can by blasting.
If veins respawn you wont have to chase them all over the map and eventually this could lead to an interesting multiplayer experience where people control veins and trade with their resources.
As a singleplayer thing, I feel the maps are fine the way they are. Most veins are not accessible through cave exploration, forcing you to actually mine to get to them. There is generally enough ore in a map to make some modest superconstructions.
However, the current maps will not work for multiplayer with every player grabbing for these resources. The way I see it either we will need more z-levels, wider levels or more caves and more ore veins. Respawning ore veins seems a little odd to me, unless you replace good chunks of the underground. Like through a volcano erupting, or an earthquake shifting good chunks of the ground apart and allowing veins to pop up. Or what have you.
Volcanoes would be awesome! :ohmy.gif:
Sure, it's very likely to destroy what you have spent 2 days on building, and possibly kill you in the process, but it would be cool to salvage what was left and try and dig out anyone trapped underground without a pickaxe and stuff. It's like the ultimate survivor mode. Meteorites would fit in nicely as well. :smile.gif:
Keep the population alive whatever happens.

Rather then have some kind of natural disaster as an ever looming necessary evil, why not make it so the veins become containers in a way. Say you see 2 iron tiles on the surface. You mine them out and its only those 2. You can mine them and they drop ore, but not alot and then run out. When they run out, you cant get any more iron until the regenerate some more.
Then you find a huge coal vein. You can mine a hell of a lot out of this one before it runs dry, but it respawns quicker.
If you're tunneling and an ore vein is in the way, you can use TNT to blow up parts of it to clear the way.
Instead of regeneration there could be enchanted/special/ultra dense/whatever blocks of all the resources that never depletes. Like diamonds in Dungeon Keeper. You cannot destroy them but it takes a bit longer to get anything from them. One block for each resource of this type is created underground, making them very rare and difficult to find.
