Ever get a room lit JUST RIGHT, not bright, mind you, but nicely lit. Torches sparse to bring out a particular mood. To leave a sensual touch? And then the mood is gone when some crummy zombie comes about and is all GROAN PAY ATTENTION TO ME!
Crummy zombies.
What if there was a non-light based monster repellant that you could make, or could be found in dungeon loot? That way, Minecrafters with a spooky little flair like yo would be able to make their emo grunge-pit houses without the fear of the big bad creeper knocking it down.
My immediate thought was a talisman, which would be a good use for paper, or a reasonable thing to expect to only be able to find in a difficult dungeon crawl. Other possibilities could be something like an herbal remedy, kinda like bay leaves to cockroaches (Bay leaves totally ward off cockroaches- betcha didn't know that!). You could even require certain wards for certain enemies so that "Snakegrass root" might keep spiders out of your patio, but you need a Creeper-Crow to keep out the bump in the nights.
And, with the lights down low, I can finally bring my ladyfriends down, and show them that annoying redstone puzzle I made, and they won't see that secret lever in the back by the shadows and figure it out right away. :sad.gif:

have you tried peaceful mode perhaps? or maybe what you could do is make it so the room is dark but not dark enough for mobs to spawn?
I would hope that monster repellents would stop at ocelots. If you never had to worry about mobs again, then whats the point of having mobs in the first place.

I play a lot on OniCraft, with several of my friends. We really like to build industrious semi-vanilla cities, make them reach a point of near self-sustenance, and then sacrifice the profited items to the Gods.

actually i understood him but what im saying is you can make a room dark and emo looking but not too dark for mobs to spawn...
p.s. to op have you ever tried dimmer lights with glowstone blocks and piston where you flip a lever and some retract while others stay out so you could keep a room bright with glowstone until you flip a lever to open the door then the puzzle area gets darker and the rest of the glowstone retracts enough where it wont be too bright.

I mean, I could. But there's still the fact that monster could spawn there anyways.
In one of my worlds, I made this giant, gnarled tree. The room is lit with redstone torches, and looks creepy. I mean, it's fitting that monsters spawn in a creepy tree area, but the thing means that I can't use my basement, AND have it look cool. I don't understand why light has to be the end-all-be-all monster protection resource.

good point well a talisman would be nice but i think it should be very hard to obtain....
maybe it could only be obtained by fighting some sort of nether boss.... that when killed drops a ton of XP and maybe a talisman or some other sort of thing that monsters wont spawn within 100 blocks of it or come near it at all....
now the nether boss could be found in nether fortresses which could be guarded by pigmen... all pigmen in it are hostile torwards you so its tough to get to the boss....
the boss could be a zombie pigman that has iron armour with a golden sword and 3 times as much health as regular pigmen and when attacked all pigmen within the fortress come running to his aid so you need to build barricades and walls before you attack him.
now of course the other pigmen would break down most blocks from the overworld but obsidian and diamond....Which is a cursed ore to them. so you'd have to collect enough of either to defend your position long enough to kill the boss and obtain the talisman. the talisman like i said earlier would scare all over world mobs and make you like a king in the nether fortress but the talisman only works when placed down. and all mobs will run from it so you could safely have a dark nice home.
Let me know what you think of the idea and sorry bot the grammar and punctuation its been a long day today
Play on peaceful if you don't want monsters around.
Or use a floor made of slabs.
Or glass, I once designed a hallway where the player walked across a water pool with Glowstone underneath that provided the light in the first place. It's very dim, but not so dim as that the player cannot see.
I would also like to point out that torches aren't the only light source you can use. Have you tried Glowstone? Or my new favorite, Redstone Lamps?
The talisman is a placeable item, right? Not something that you wear that scares monsters away? Then I don't see why it couldn't be just as easy to make as torches. All it is is a torch with less benefits and that's harder to use. (You can't see the area of effect.)
It would make a very nice addition to anyone who builds with aesthetics in mind. I don't see why everyone is opposed to it, unless they thought it was a wearable item.
Essentially, all you want is a torch that doesn't give light, right?

It's not about using things that are not torches. It's about using something other than light for monster protection so that you can issue lighting in some other fashion. Good for, say, when you have a roof you don't want to be brightly lit for no reason, but you also don't want a bunch of creepers on.

Yes, essentially just a torch without the light. I'm not sure why everyone is opposed to it, though you might be right to assume they might have thought it was wearable, judging by the posts above.
I'm not sure there's a good way to make items that make sense with the gameplay that are as easy as putting coal on a stick. Maybe a pumpkin on wool with logs for arms (scarecrow)?
Yet again, you manage to come up with a genius suggestion. There could be kinds of special Herbs that can be made into special Mob repelent without brewing - it could be the new use of a Cauldron. Fill the Cauldron with water, heat it with Flint and Steel (the Cauldron glows a warm red) and add the special Herb, wait a few seconds until it starts emitting steam particles- viola, grab a Glass Bottle, scoop up the Repelent, and either drink it or spray it around the room. +1 and for you! However, you can use Mycelium to prevent Mob spawning... Still, great idea!

Excuse me, but that was my comment you just read there, bub.
...I could a "spawn interdiction" block, made for creative mode, so you can build adventure maps with "peaceful" and "dangerous" areas. In fact, I think that would be a great addition, much like the fire charges and experience bottles!
This is actually a really good idea, and for a number of reasons.

Thanks! I like the cauldron idea. The problem with Mycelium is that then everything has mush-purple flooring.

So, you are against torches and glowstone keeping mobs away as well? After all, if you can make a safe area, what's the point of mobs in the first pla- oh wait, I've pretty much made an essay on that subject before. The point of mobs is to encourage you to place torches, explore cautiously, and make enclosed shelters, by means of negative reinforcement. If you are looking for a game where "fight enemies" is the main focus, then Minecraft is not for you.
I'm in support of this idea. It would allow flexibility in construction, without compromising the reason why you're encouraged to build a shelter in the first place. Actually, though, there is another suggestion you might want to look at that would achieve similar results. I think it might be a very elegant solution, as it doesn't rely on crafting any new items.

I'm all in for support of renovated monster spawning. Especially now that passive mobs have been given a more 'realistic' means of entry. I really like this idea, though I think that the item might be a good idea too- if you wanted to explore a cave, but not draw attention to yourself in SMP, for instance.
I think this is exactly what he wants. I dont see the problem why everyone is so against it. Shouldnt be hard to obtain either. If you dont want mobs then just place the normal torches instead. If you want an eerie look place the torches that dont give light. Same effect as a torch but no light, so why should it be rare? Or we going to make torches rare too? hmm?
Again, not necessarily out of "balancing reasons", but just because talismans seem like something that require more specific materials. If it was, say, a paper talisman (such as in the old Japanese horror flicks), you'd need ink and paper. Even if you only needed two things, they come from relatively uncommon places. If you wanted to make scarecrows, you'd need pumpkins, which at initial spawn are hard to come by. A metal talisman, would require metal. I originally included the "dungeon loot" ideas in the GS community because it had a similarly negative reaction.

It's not something you would place on yourself.
Think... "I'm placing a torch. Wait, what's this? This torch doesn't provide light. But what? It provide protection from monsters? Egads!"
A torch doesn't protect the user when it's in the inventory. Similarly, neither would the talisman.
