The formation of natural diamond requires very specific conditions—exposure of carbon-bearing materials to high pressure, ranging approximately between 45 and 60 kilobars (4.5 and 6 GPa), but at a comparatively low temperature range between approximately 900–1300 °C. These conditions are met in two places on Earth; in the lithospheric mantle below relatively stable continental plates, and at the site of a meteorite strike.
This is sort of farfetched though. Even if they are both carbon, just putting coal on a crafting table and maybe hitting it a lot isn't going to make diamonds.
I think he meant diamond block, 9 C = 1CB, 9 CB=1 DO =1 D, 9 D= 1 DB, therefore: 9x9x9 =729 :3
And a goodish idea for a little add-on mod because it's still 81 coal to make 1 diamond, so it would take 243 coal (and 2 sticks xD) to make a diamond pickaxe.
Far too OP. Although I would love to be able to turn coal into diamond, this is never going to happen unless the process of crafting the diamond either takes forever and tons of coal or kills you and resets your spawn point to a random spot on the map at least 250 chunks away from where you died. I like the coal block. Would make a nice substitute for obsidian in situations that don't need blast or tool resistance. It should be very flammable, but burn for a few minutes so it isn't destroyed as quickly as wool. Maybe there should be a block used like a furnace that compresses multiple blocks into one. But that belongs in another thread because I don't want to derail this thread.

In real life, there are no exploding bush genitalia. Your argument is invalid and I facepalmed my skull in when I read this topic because this is an overpowered suggestion and your logic is flawed -- just because minecraft is a loose imitation of real life does not mean that "realism" is an excuse to add this. Undead monsters and giant spiders don't exist in the real world, nor do dragons or psychic darkness elementals.
Simplified: Under extreme heat and pressure, coal (a form of carbon) will compact into a certain molecular organization, creating diamond. Diamond=carbon, Coal=carbon, thus Coal=Diamond.
I've said this before on a thread titled "Fabrication"
The minute there's a way to actually craft diamonds, no matter how many drawbacks you put on it, I'm leaving this game, I swear to it. Diamonds, coal, iron, gold, they're all supposed to be mined, to be found, not made. There's supposed to be challenges and fun finding diamonds, not a lack thereof crafting one.

Good point, my friend.
I think I have enough diamonds anyways.
Also, This can't be based on real life, As coal becoming diamonds require huge amounts of heat and pressure. I doubt your bare hands could generate enough heat to do that. (I'll give you pressure, since minecraft steve can care 2304 blocks of 1x1 meter iron.)
As you know, coal is carbon. When coal is pressed with heal and pressure, it becomes a diamond. Now, both of these can be found in Minecraft.
In real life, if you find coal, there's diamonds near by. I'm not saying to add this, but here's the main idea:
If you take 9 coal peaces, and craft them in the crafting table you get a Coal Cube/Coal Block.
CCC
CCC ====== CB
CCC
If you take 9 Coal Blocks, and craft them in the crafting table, you get a Diamond Ore.
CB CB CB
CB CB CB ======== DO
CB CB CB
Since daimonds are no longer the main goal of Minecraft, why not make it slightly easier to get them? It will take 81 coal to make a diamond ore.
Thoughts?
Also, there are mods that do this almost exactly how you describe.
That's exactly what I thought. Can't even figure out where 729 came from.
This guy has MAD math skills, don't you agree?
From wikipedia:
Heh
Might want to fix your post.. um 9x9=729
damn, you stupid
Oh good, you fixed it. Just tell me, where did you get 729 from?
Sorry. I added a third 9 to my head...

Mostly moved on. May check back a few times a year.

Diamond is formed by the carbon compounds in coal "squishing" into eachother so tight that it becomes a pure crystalline chunk of pure carbon.
or -1 me with your mind. One of them is less frustrating.
