you can't put cake on "tables" since the game is meant to not have tables of any kind.
why can't jeb give us furniture?

if i behave weird in my post; it's not that i am weird actually. I like to pretend being weird just for the satisfaction of me and to make the community feel more normal. herpy herpy derp. btw, comic sans.
use an extended piston as a table, looks good and you can put cake on it. problem solved. also if your wondering it goes like this = cake =piston = redstone torch
I think of Christmas as a happy time, It's the only time of the year when every man and woman sees each other as equals. Even if it hasn't put any gold or silver in my pockets I say it has done me good and will do me good and there for I say god bless it! ~Scrooge's Nephew.
Pressure plates were allowed on top of fence posts to make tables. Tables spawn in villages. They should be more than a pressureplate on top of a fence post when you make one. They should at least make them useful.
Cake also shouldn't be floating like that above the pressure plate.

Furniture...meh. It would definitely help to add some aesthetic purposes, but the problem is that it could be difficult to provide a good variety of furniture, not unless there was a whole other kind of crafting table/recipe thing that allowed for simply the crafting of furniture.
As it stands, however, it is easy enough to place cake on an extended piston. There are ways to make the items we have look like furniture, it's just a matter of creativity and imagination.

No it isn't needed, but it's the principle of things. It's very sloppy to naturally spawn "tables" that are simply a pressureplate on top of a fence posts in villages. Other games don't cut corners like this. Either make real tables that you can do things with or don't even try, because you obviously don't know how to properly include a table.
It's not Beta anymore. This sloppiness is expected in Beta not full release.

That doesn't seem like constructive cricticism to Mojang.
Table block: fence post with a pressureplate in crafting table. It modifies the data, so that the head of the table is where the top of the fence post is. Since it is one block, you can put things on it.
It could also do this normally, by placing a pressureplate on top of a fence post. Table block can be moved up and down as a single unit by a piston.

It could also do this normally, but placing a pressureplate on top of a fence post. Table block can be moved up and down as a single unit by a piston.
There's my solution.
That's more constructive.
This is a reasonable addition. Of course, shouldn't be Jeb's priority, but still a good idea.

Using the same sort of block detection used in making snow golems to replace it with a different block? That could work.
"Tables" could also just be replaced with extended pistons in villages.

Good god, just look at the piston post, this is rediculous!
Also they still click when you go near them. If it's going to be a table make it function like a table.

Yeah
One of the best things that could be added is furniture.

The piston one might look better with slab floors.

Well now, there's an idea. Your wording threw me off for a second, but yes, something like a Snow golem would be neat.

Kind of like IKEA furniture.
So instead of "Put Sticks and Wood in the Crafting Table", it would instead have parts, steps, slots and letters.
