It could theoretically be used as part of the laser-lens required to read the disc you put into it. But that's assuming a present-day disc drive, and this is probably much more old-fashioned and thus the diamond would be useless.
And that is my point. What makes you think that the record players and pistons of minecraft are parallels to similar devices in real life?

Because of their names and how they behave (although, as said, the jukebox's crafting recipe is certainly strange). If we want to call the jukebox "magic," then it shouldn't be called a jukebox, it should be something like a "Music Player" or "Music Box." And even without the jukebox itself, we do still have records that would require certain manufacturing techniques to create.

I would actually support changing the name of jukeboxes to music box. And if we're going to argue names, aren't the records called music discs?
Oops. my bad on that one. Although they do still appear to be made of the same material, and store data (music) in the same way as records.

Here is what you have to consider when adding a new weapon:
1. Does it rival another weapon? Guns would be the same as bows but with different stats, so that doesn't work.
2. Does it fit Minecraft? Guns do not.
3. Would it be difficult to program for MP? Yes, guns would be a nightmare.
I'm probably late to the party to say this, but hombre, number 3 is wrong. I'm pretty sure hitscan weapons would be lighter on the game than bows. Bows have to have constant updating due to the fact that they are projectiles. Your computer has to process where it is every second. Guns, not so much. I think the way you'd code a gun is by saying something in your code that translates to English like this:
The first occupied space in front of the crosshairs at the time the trigger is pulled is hit by a bullet.
What that means is it's hit-scan. Rather than sending out a projectile, which requires constant calculations, you get immediate results. That's it. As soon as you pull the trigger, all damage is done.
Guns would presumably have inaccuracy if they were primitive. That would be hard to program. Plus, if the shot went straight, it could get stuck somewhere and cause lag and be hacked to automatically aim (bows are much harder to hack). And they'd have to somehow limit how many guns you can hold or else someone would keep 5 loaded guns on them and fire them instantly. Also, I doubt Minecraft is designed to have tiny entities flying near the speed of sound. It gets glitched just from falling sand.
Also, as I said, the jukeboxes and stuff are outliers and can be ignored. They don't affect the gameplay but are just for fun. Redstone stuff is also just for fun and ease. However, a gun would just add a weapon that is directly related to real-world post-medieval times and is a major part of the game.

I was assuming they'd not make it so overpowered. Perfect accuracy, infinite range, no curve?
And, even if you wish to view it as medieval despite the obvious advanced technologies that disprove it, the first firearms were created by the Chinese in 700 AD. The middle ages lasted until about 1400 (someone correct me here).
You're right about this, but the original poster was asking about Civil War guns. Guns have existed in the middle ages.

How do you know? We get the discs by tricking a skeleton into shooting and killing an explosive plant creature. We had nothing to do with the manufacturing of said disc, and only know that reading the information on that disc involves a diamond.
For all we know the discs are enchanted to have that information on them, and that record players are only called that so we would be able to put two and two together and try to play music with them. Or maybe they were called that because Notch couldn't come up with an older sounding name, like pistons.
Also, doesn't the fact that diamonds are involved in the process of enchanting other things kind of suggest that the diamonds in the "jukebox" recipe have something to do with magic?
I've been here since the InfDev stage of Minecraft, and time and time again something like this was suggested. Time and time again, this suggestion was shot down. Why? No one wants guns, it doesn't fit the theme of the game and would much rather stick to swords and bows.

Plus, you don't want to make an item that is just another one with different stats. It has to be unique. Look at powered minecarts.... completely unused. Jeb is going to buff them later.

Well, he did make powered rails which totally shoots powered minecarts out of the water once you get redstone.

Of course, once they buff the powered carts a lot, I'd probably use them since they'd be faster than powered rails even though they wouldn't be automatic.

I'd say powered rails remain the best speeder due to the resources it takes to create. I think the speed of powered minecarts should be doubled and able to push other carts up with ease as well.

Curve is arbitrary and annoying to me. For the other two.
Imagine a cone. The point of said cone is the end of the barrel of the gun. Most video games have these at the end of every barrel. A bullet may leave at a randomly chosen angle within this cone. So it would look something like this in simple english:
Bullets leave the barrel randomly moving off at any given angle in this cone.
Cone could be described as the set of all points on lines forming an angle with degrees less than x at point y on the line.
Range could easily be limited by the cone itself, but since we're playing the game...
This one's in mathy terms, since I kinda know it:
Damage= (1+((.1)(10-range in meters)))(base damage)
Guns are one of the most widely and controversial suggested ideas on this forum.
This thread is no different.
