I had an idea for multiplayer, Notch should add pickpocketing.
The concept is simple, you walk up to another person and with nothing in your hand you hold right click on that person. It opens the other persons inventory as a it would a chest.
Now before you go saying it's overpowered, I will extrapolate on some particulars.
Firstly, you wouldn't be able to access their inventory instantly, it'd take maybe ten second of holding right click on them to 'pickpocket' them and then you select what you want.
That would keep people form just running up to someone and grabbing their stuff and running away, it would require stealth.
Secondly, you'd have to be withing three blocks of the person to attempt to pickpocket someone.
This would mean you'd have to get close to the other person to even attempt to pickpocket them.
Thirdly, if the person moved out of reach while you were trying to pickpocket them or while you were pickpocketing them, it would instantly stop and you'd have to try again, although any items gained before they moved would be kept.
This would make pickpocketing an art, a skill to be practiced and perfected.
Lastly, if you are hit by anything while attempting to pickpocket, you will take double damage form that attack and the attempt will end.
This would make it dangerous to do, keeping everybody from trying it for fun, because even if the person you're pickpocketing doesn't notice, if one of his friends notices and shoots you, you're as good as dead.
In my humble opinion it'd add a whole new aspect to the game that would make the game a bit more interactive on the multilayer end, making more options to gameplay and it'd add the ability to have many more self imposed goals like "steal nine diamonds from miners" or "steal the whole inventory of a clan leader". This would make it so there could be 'thieves guilds' or some such things.
Suggestions:
Pxex: "when you get pickpocket a message appear only to you that say something like "You feel lighter" or something that will alert the player, so you cant just steal there whole inventory while there mining or crafting "
Jorriem: Agreed, a text that appears would be nice, but it'd have to be subtle so only if the person being pickpocketed was paying attention could they stop the thief.
Natemma: "Couldn't just standing behind someone be mistaken for pickpocketing? It would definetely cause some unprovoked attacks. There should be a way the person stands or acts when he is doing it, so it is unmistakable."
Jorriem: Agreed, there should be a unique animation for someone pickpocketing to make it more obvious to observation.
Now that's my general idea, it could use some embellishments and improvements, but I think it's pretty good, comment and give me your suggestions and critiques.
(A couple notes, it could be difficulty based, so only on hard could you pickpocket, or it could be an option in the multilayer properties so servers that don't want it could turn it off. Also it could be affected by sneak, i.e. if you're in sneak it take less time to get into someones inventory or you could only pickpocket in sneak)
Nice Idea :biggrin.gif:
But 10 Seconds is a bit to much...
Maybe 5???
I mean..
Taking double damage while Pickpocekting and if the player goes out of reach he has to go all over..
So i think 5 Minutes is good :biggrin.gif:
I've always wanted something like this.
There are plugins and such running about that add pickpocket as an ability but a plugins ability expands only so far. I would love this added to the game, or at least a GOOD plugin, most plugins that add this don't allow the player to view the inventory nor have any matter of stealth required, simply speed and luck.
But regardless, I love this idea and hope it could be implemented AT LEAST as a bukkit plugin.

to be fair, pickpocketing the hotbar without being caught would take MASSIVE luck. After all, you have to assume players are aware of this mechanic, and that they would problably know whats going on when item start dissapearing from their hands!
i think it needs to be really hard to pickpocket someone, like you cant pickpockey there hotbar and when you get pickpocket a message appear only to you that say something like "You feel lighter" or something that will alert the player, so you cant just steal there whole invintory while there mining or crafting
To be honest this is all my idea, I haven't played Skyrim yet(a travesty I know) and I haven't played Assassins creed either(another travesty) so all this is from me playing minecraft and coming up with ideas from what I've observed.
The time it takes to pickpocket are just some numbers I threw out, I'm not a game developer and I can't exactly test it to see how different times would work, but five seconds sounds good, but as I said, I have no idea which is better.
Stealing things from hotbars would be paramount to suicide because you could see them leaving and then turn around and kill the thief, but I have nothing against stealing from hotbars, however, it wouldn't be that realistic, as the inventory is what's in your 'pockets' and the hotbars is supposedly whats in your hand. So it'd be kind strange to be pickpocketing what someone's holding in their hand, but if you could do it it'd mean you were a master thief for sure, lol.
Nice idea Pxex! The message should be something not to obvious but still noticeable.
Couldn't just standing behind someone be mistaken for pickpocketing? It would definetely cause some unprovoked attacks. There should be a way the person stands or acts when he is doing it, so it is unmistakable.

And if someone is taking like a break and leaves their computer and gets pickpocketed, they're screwed, I'm not saying it's unfixable, but something would have to be done about it.

This is a valid point, I agree there should a certain look to someone who's pickpocketing to keep things form getting confused and messy. And if someone AFK's and there's guys around that want their stuff, they're screwed anyways, it's better to disconnect until you're back.
And to I'll say this again, I haven't even played Skyrim yet, although if something like this is in it, I can't wait till I can get it!

Only useful for griefing (note: griefing is the act of ruining other people's fun, not only destruction). Imagine you spent weeks mining and fighting to get rare, useful blocks... Just for some guy appear and pickpocket you.
Nat, someone who afks can just as easily be violently murdered right now. Also, perhaps pickpocketing requires crouching?
That's exactly what I was thinking. The only use for crouch right now is to stick to cliffs so you don't fall. This would give it another use and be obvious if the other person sees you.
I am currently building a large medieval map that I will be putting in a server once the new update comes out. I think this mod/plugin would be great! I only have some new ideas:
Pickpocketing villagers for random things
Invisibility ability that lasts 30 seconds with a 2 minute cool down
Pickpocketing has a chance of failing. If failed, you are done some damage and the victim will be alerted (no chance for him to miss it)
Items in the hotbar/worn can be stolen with only a 1 percent chance of succes
Lockable chests
You can attempt to lock pick the chest and access all items inside
Lockable doors and blocks that only that the player, mods, and admins can break
Lockpick ability on doors
Iron golems attack those caught in the act of pick pocketing/lock picking
New type of villager: soldier. Soldier acts like the iron golem but has a sword/bow
This would be awesome but it should be only 5 seconds because unless they're taking a it's almost impossible! Also NO MESSAGE it would make pickpocketing too hard. It should be so that you can only take a certain amount of items per second. For Each block it should take a little longer. That makes it hard but not impossible. It should also have a special animation but you have to be crouching to pickpocket. Also the only leather idea is also bad beacuase you take double damage so having good armor would make it fair.
