So I've decided to make this into a mod, but because of certain data-storage restrictions, I have to modify the functionality just slightly.
Instead of setting and resetting a scope length, the block will instead always have a scope of 8 (perhaps 12) blocks. This does not, however, always mean 8 (12) blocks must be used.
Instead of constant power flow when an object is within the specified range, the block will only send a single pulse of power when it detects a change (based on whole number coordinates for entities) in the distance between it and the nearest object in the active direction within the maximum distance. When hooked up to a toggle switch, you could achieve constant power for the time that the field of vision is blocked.
Right clicking will not reset direction or scope, but instead toggle between active and inactive states. Alternatively, the block could require a power input from the sides or bottom. That part I haven't decided on yet.
There will only be one version, made with cobblestone, a redstone torch, a redstone dust, and glass.
NO, because it'd be insanely overpowered.
You could make the "beam" go as far as the map renders, and hook it up with dispensers or whatnot so that even if you walk 50 blocks from it, it would register you and activate all those dispensers..
If you made the "beam" go a maximum of 5 blocks, and the recipe requiring rare materials, then it could work, though.
Edit.
I didn't read the last post about it, but I still think it's too overpowered.
(It needs rarer materials in the recipe!)
Where EB = Eye Block, W = Water and G = Glass
The eye can see through water and glass, but the water would stop someone from seeing it. So someone could get dropped into a cage or something and not even know it. No pressure plate. No nothing. But they failed to see the eye block before it saw them. :tongue.gif:!
EDIT: The BTW mod doesn't do this. Their Detector Block only sees something LESS THAN A BLOCK IN FRONT OF IT. This would see up to 16 BLOCKS IN FRONT OF IT. Way better than the BTW way.
Basically is a trip wire that if crossed starts a trap. Similar to a pressure pad. I like the idea but it would be difficult to hide and would be something useful in a server where you need to hide something.
Currently, the only 'sensor' we have that detects entities is the Pressure Plate, but that is limited to a one-block space and blocks water.
The Eye block can cover a 16-block line and only takes up one block of space, meaning this can be applied in situations where pressure plates simply would not work.
Also, traps that make use of pressure plates have the problem where the plate can be removed, rendering the trap harmless. A trap that utilizes the Eye block can detect players at greater range, preventing players from noticing it as fast as they would notice pressure plates.

Your features sound a bit complicated, try to keep it simple. And, I don't think it should require power.

The maximum range has been defined in the OP as 16 blocks.
Goodness, it's almost as if the OP didn't even exist. IT'S THERE FOR A REASON YA KNOW.
Sooo... your point? This is suggesting that eye blocks be added in vanilla Minecraft, not a mod.

I love how the lot of you haven't completely read the OP.
It's almost kinda sad.

It would make death traps easier to make >:biggrin.gif:
