Most of the Rocket suggestions I have seen were "a tad overpowered," or "too dull." I agree that Rockets would make a useful and wonderful addition to Minecraft. Unlike other suggestions however, this proposal will use a 3-part crafting system:
Tip: The top of the rocket, this determines the damage it deals and how will behave when fired.
Body: adds a special ability to your rocket, depending on the material used. It also determine's the explosion sprites' colour.
Tail: Crafting better tails will make your rockets travel more accurately.
To craft the Tip, You just need to follow a basic schematic:
[] []
This makes a Warhead, which deals 5 damage. Replacing the on the top with different materials adds differing impacts and damage:
:Flint:: punctures straight through 3 mobs for 1 damage, then explodes for 2, dealing 5 damage total.
:obsidian:: punctures straight through all mobs for 1 damage, does not explode, can be reused at 1 cost.
[>>-i>]: Sticks into a struck target for 3 seconds, explodes for 5 damage afterward.
:Ham:: No damage, causes tamed AND wild wolves nearby to attack target.
: Explode for 2 damage, sets target on fire.
Redstone: 3 second timer, explodes for 6 damage.
The body is created with a shaft like schematic:
= any dye of one colour
This makes a basic shaft with no special abilities. The dye colours the explosion
Once again, the can be replaced with different materials:
:wood:: Does not destroy blocks. Useful for indoor defence
:GoldBar:: Enemies killed transform into gold statues, which can either be placed for prosperity or smelted down into gold blocks.
:Diamond:: Creates an artificial sun for 15 seconds on hit, causing all monsters to burn.
The tail is crafted with this schematic:
[] []
[] []
This can be crafted with :wood:, :cobblestone:, :Iron:, :GoldBar:, and :Diamond:. The materials determine accuracy and speed:
Lower grade materials fly faster, but higher grade materials fly straighter. As a result, you can have a slow-moving Diamond Rocket that has perfect accuracy, or a very quick but inaccurate Wood rocket, or a balanced Iron rocket.
Once you have crafted the pieces, craft them together in a straight line to create a salvo of 4 rockets. but how do I launch them? craft a Rocket Launcher using the following schematic:
[] []
= Redstone.
Can be crafted with , , , , and :Diamond:.
Rocket launchers have the durability of their respective resources used. For instance, you can only fire 59 rockets with a wooden model before it breaks. Why 59 and not 60? attempting to fire the last one will cause it to malfunction, dealing 6 damage to yourself and breaking the weapon. Beware, using better materials has a larger misfire:
= 6 damage
= 7 damage
= 8 damage
= 9 damage
= 10 damage
However, investing in armor will, as always, mitigate the damage from a misfire.
And that is all for my suggestion. feel free to criticize.

When I saw the topic I was tempted to jump in and say 'no'. But after reading it, I think it would be a useful addition, although a tad complex, like you had to memorize what you had to do to make a bad a** explosion that would fit your interests.
I was also tempted to say no, but this looks pretty good, except for the technology. Got thwarted there man. In a medieval world, taking out a rocket launcher just seems out of nowhere. If it could be somewhat medievalized then I would support. The idea is awesome though.

http://myschoo.php5.sk/mca/ = AWESOME. The pen is mightier than the sword, or in this case, the text is mightier than the troll.
the rocket would be more like a artillery shell gunpowder provides a quick explosion, like a bullet. while a rocket requires constant streaming of thrust from it's tail.
this is probally one of the better weapons thread i have seen, you get one
Ancient China had rocket launchers 3000 years ago, therefore your argument is invalid.
Also, most Chinese Rocket Launchers held more ammo than today's missile launcher trucks.
Appreciate the support from the rest of you

Hmph, it seems you took the general Rocket Launcher idea and....made it worse? Not only does it take more resources to make, but apparently it's just an encumbersome and unweildy version of a Bow and Incendiary Arrows that can hurt you, adds a couple items to the game that serve no purpose OTHER than the Rocket Launcher (1 is fine, more than that is ridiculous), and you forget that Notch doesn't want guns in Minecraft anyway, and a rocket launcher falls under that category.
Notch will never add this anyway, so whatever.

Trollcalling is the act of trying to convince other users that a poster is a troll and/or accusing other users of being trolls. This is a bannable offense. Please report trolling, do not advertise it or react to it.

What's wrong with that? Effort put in (crafting) is equal to result put out (5 damage per rocket, 4 rockets built). Plus, Reeds -> Paper -> books -> bookcase. neither paper nor books have any other purpose than to build bookcases. Also, you can tweak the schematic to fit your personal needs. You can build a wide range of rockets from perfect accuracy armor piercing rockets to speedy indoor-spam-rockets. Also, many of the above posters would be quite upset at what you said.

Could I see your source please?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rocket Here you go. Look at the sub-section "In antiquity"
It was also featured on Discovery Channel
EDIT: Some cartoons and movies based on Ancient China had scenes of them using rocket launchers. See: Mulan
