If someone else had the same idea already: Sorry, the search function doesnt work at the moment.
I just got an idea for a new passive, but maybe useful mob: horses. They could spawn like any other neutral mob in the landscape. What their use would be, i guess, is quite clear: Riding them as a faster way of land transportation. By faster I mean up to three or four times faster than walking. To achieve this, one would have to tame a wild horse, for example by giving it sugar or something else to eat. Maybe also in a way that each horse has some kind of character, some require more food to be tamed than others, some may even not become tame at all.
Once a horse is tamed it would not despawn any more. You would then need a saddle to ride it, the same way you control a boat, only with a much less doughy behavior. And, as long as you are not sitting on it, the horse should follow the palyer. But there should also be a way to tell it to stay where it is, if you want to go somewhere on your own.
Horses are shy animals. This could be implemented in a way, that if a hostile mob gets closer than X blocks it will either run away with you if your riding it in whatever direction it wants or throw you off and then flee, which of course would mean the loss of your fellow. The same would happen if you're not riding it the moment it spots an enemy. Also, horses should refuse walking into dark areas if you try to direct it there.
As in reality, it should not be possible to swim on horses. I guess it would be realistic if you could wade through water that is two blocks deep on their back, but any deeper water would require getting off and resaddle on the other shore.
Already part of a popular mod called Mo Creatures. I used it once, but it kinda stole the "feel" from Minecraft. That's why I don't use it anymore. NO! It ruins the game's feeling over time for some of us.
