Hello! I have decided to start a series of suggestions all about improving the ocean. There will be three parts, and this is of course the first one. This part will be all about how oceans are generated in the world and how ocean generation could be improved.
Technicalities
As of now, oceans are pretty much just big lakes. If you look at maps of Minecraft world generation, such as this one, you can see how small oceans really are right now. Now, this change was made due to oceans being too large–but that doesn't mean oceans can't be a little large. Oceans used to go on for tens of thousands of blocks, and sometimes even more than that. However, as you can see in the picture from the Mojang website, oceans got really small and are basically lakes. Just because oceans used to be too big, doesn't mean we have to have them extremely small.
I propose a rework to how ocean and land is generated. Instead of having this current system where land dominates everything, I propose we have large chunks of land (continents) be separated by large oceans. Of course, I think there should be an option in the world creation menu to control the size of oceans- allowing people to have oceans as small as they are now, as big as they used to be, or the new medium that I am suggesting. Of course, the medium/in-between size that I am suggesting would be the new default, as I think it has the best balance.
In addition to this, I think islands should get a rework, too. As of now, islands are very small. I think we should keep the current small island size as a rare thing, but most islands should be of decent size. I'm not quite sure how large yet, but definitely large enough for it to make sense that animals would be there. Islands should also mostly be jungle and/or tropical palm tree biomes, but more on that in Part 2.
How large should oceans be? I would say large enough so that there is always a point where you can look around and only see ocean. I mean, seriously, you shouldn't be able to see the mainland or another island while on an island. Plus, marooning other players would be a lot more effective (that was a joke). Since your render distance can be to 32 chunks, each ocean would have to be a little over 1000 blocks long. However, I think this should be increased a bit, so that there is more than one block where you can stand and only see ocean. I'm thinking a 1500 to 2500 block distance between continents, with a few islands sprinkled around, and some areas where a lot of islands are sprinkled around. The continents would be at least 3000 blocks long, so don't worry about there being too much ocean. If you think these numbers should change, please let me know.
Benefits
This change would allow for improved exploring and more opportunities for rare structures on islands or at the bottom of the ocean. Having ocean expeditions as a form of exploration would add a lot to the exploration side of the game that Mojang seems to be taking Minecraft to. Players would be encouraged to travel long distances to other continents after exploring the entire continent they spawned on. Again, I will talk more about the ocean content (what's in the ocean) in Part 2.
"But How Would I Traverse These Large Oceans?"
Well, for starters, current boats would be renamed to "rowboat." Then, there would be a new kind of boat called the "sailboat." It would be crafted like this:
Alternatively, you could use the following recipe:
Don't freak out. It wouldn't be much bigger than the rowboat. The closest thing I have found to what I'm thinking of is this:
Image from a video by the YouTuber CaptainSparklez
(Note: If you use the second recipe, the sail will have the pattern of the banner you used.)
It wouldn't have the ropes, or lamp, but other than that, this is pretty much how the sailboat would look. After you place it down, you would be able to put a single chest on it just like you can with a donkey. When you sail it, it would start out around half the speed of the rowboat, and gradually increase to around 1.5 times the speed of the rowboat within 10-15 seconds. Note that the sailboat would also be harder to steer; it would turn at one third the speed of the rowboat, giving rowboats a maneuverability advantage.
The player would be standing when operating the boat, and the sail and tiller would turn as you turn the boat. There would be a maximum of two players per sailboat, and the first person to hop in would be the one that can turn the sailboat. You wouldn't have to hold down the w key since it is powered by sails and not paddles.
Support Banner
I've seen other suggestions have support banners, so I made one for this using textcraft.net.
The thing is, crafting recipes are mostly symbolic for their item. You don't need 2 sticks for a pickaxe, but it looks like you're making a pickaxe, so that is the recipe. I see where you are coming from, though, so I'll consider updating it.
I like the idea of reintroducing oceans and continents. having a broader space between land does wonders for the sense of adventure and adds that little bit of realism... I like the concept of the sail boat as well. The problem that lies is for players who play on limited maps. oceans would need to be huge to make a sailboat practical leaving little land in a limited map to form... you could spawn in on the game in the middle of the ocean as well, far from land...
I can see the reasons for bringing back and the reasons they removed huge oceans... personally, I missed the huge ocean era so I never knew the trials and tribulations people faced with it. personally, I would rather master a continent than a land mass of biomes...
I really support this idea, Minecraft needs more oceans. Instead of putting in an Ocean Monument they should have made an update like this. Oceans are far too small.

It seems they just can't please everyone... the oceans were big once... but people didn't like it. now they are small... and people don't like it lol
Question: How fast would the sailboat accelerate from minimum to maximum speed?

Console Battle is two games rolled into one: gambling (whether or not you get one of the OP weapons) and betting (which teammate won't turn on you, since teaming is pretty much a requirement to kill off another team)! Of course, it's not all chance; at its core, Battle is about triumphing and defeating other players... by kicking them out if they win to make yourself feel better.
I think it should take about 1 minute to get from minimum to maximum speed. What do you think? I'm not 100% on 1 minute so I didn't include it in the original thread. I can update it if you want though. The purpose of the increase is to ensure that the current rowboat is still useful for short distance traveling.
I would like to hear your thoughts though. Do you think 1 minute is too long or not long enough?
Instead of just having large continents and oceans it would be better to have various sizes of both, by adding smaller landmasses, as this would increase variety, not just make them reasonably sized. For example, here are a few AMIDST maps of landmasses in my mod; note the great difference between each seed (note that the vanilla mechanic to favor a continent around the origin was retained; it is not very fun to spawn in the middle of an ocean with no land for hundreds or thousands of blocks. Technically, all seeds are the same on a large enough scale but most players are concerned about the region within a few thousand blocks of spawn):
Here is a comparison between my mod and vanilla 1.6.4 and 1.7+:
TMCWv4 (individual biomes were disabled since they cause AMIDST to crash):
1.6.4:
1.7+
Also, another issue with oceans in 1.7 is the fact they have way too many islands, which really does not make them look like oceans at all on a map; they should be much rarer and/or be limited to certain areas of ocean, which again would increase variety; likewise, they should vary more in size.
This was part one of three, and this part was talking about world generation. To those of you suggesting I suggest sharks and whatnot: that type of thing will be in part two.
I think the main problem behind having bigger oceans is that there are very few players interested spending most of their precious playtime just trying to get over an ocean in a boat. Sure, Nether Portals exist, but you have to either use AMIDST to find more land or sail over there to make sure you don't end up over an ocean.
That being said, though, I think I still like the idea of a more realistic water to land ratio.

My avatar is a texture from a small block game I made in Python. It's not very good and it probably won't work if you install it.
I'm very alone in my Minecraft worlds as I don't have a very good internet connection to run a server. If you're like me, you might be interested in my Posse mod suggestion.

*facepalm*
Sorry forgot this was part of a series.. might've been an idea if you posted 'part 1:ocean generation' / 'part 2:Mobs generation (or whatever you plan to include) ' / 'part 3: ????' then i'd would've held out until part 2
Make the oceans interesting? Shipwrecks! Traders! Pirates! Sea faring Ghosts in shipwrecks! It's not hard. Idea's are easy! Implementation is hard. Some players build in the ocean. so to say players have no interest is probably false.
I'd traverse a vast ocean to encounter pirates and explore shipwrecks, Trade with merchants and fight off apparitions of long dead crew.... maybe the option of a "Houseboat" could be suggested... design just a rudder, anchor, and a sail for crafting... build the base out of wood and make it as big as you want!

In my mind, traveling by ocean would be more exciting than holding down the W key. There would be danger, there would be storms, but of course a lot more avoidable than the Nether.
Sorry for the extremely unreasonably late reply by the way.
I quite like the idea of implementing continents and oceans. Right now, Minecraft worlds are just lakes and land.
I just have one problem. The sailboat doesn't really serve a purpose other than storing ONE chest in said sailboat. You should be able to have 2-3 single chests in a sailboat, even if it means make them a bit bigger, otherwise sailboats don't really serve much of a purpose other than different speed, decoration and a little bit of storage.

They made it too small, they just needed it to be in between.
Support. The "oceans" are really puny.

10 or 15 seconds
I like this idea but ONLY if the developers also did something to make the oceans more interesting.. sailing large vast oceans would be boring..
but perhaps adding stuff like
- The occasional 'Sea Trader' (static boat with villager on it - tpically fisherman, but perhaps with small random chance of some other 'trader')
- Floating village by small island outcrop ??
- more sea life (sharks as alternative to zombie/skelly as 'hazards' while travelling perhaps)
- Sunken boats/Shipwrecks on rocks (with maybe chests to discover) for added exploration (maybe even use these as 'dungeon alternatives')
As for recipe - I thing the Banner is a good idea & since you also want chest I thing the recipe should be more like
NOTE: Signpost is in fact meant to be Banner - the recipe maker used doesn't have a banner icon

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
